Chapter 10 - The Truth That Saved The Moretti Family

A little girl opened her arms and cried:
"Daddy, I was waiting for you."
When Gabriel Moretti reached the abandoned room beneath the old estate, he found Lily sitting beside a woman from his past.
On the table was the final recording left by his father.
The last words were:
"Gabriel, forgive me."
And Gabriel finally understood who he had been fighting all along.
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Gabriel stood frozen in front of the monitor.
The image of Lily disappeared.
But her voice remained in his mind.
Uncle Adrian brought me here.
The sentence hurt because Gabriel knew his daughter never lied.
Not about things like this.
Children didn't understand manipulation.
They understood trust.
And Lily trusted people who made her feel safe.
Gabriel turned toward Adrian.
The anger in his eyes was impossible to hide.
"Tell me."
Adrian didn't move.
"Gabriel..."
"No."
His voice was quiet.
But everyone in the room felt the danger.
"Tell me why my daughter believes you brought her there."
Adrian looked down.
For the first time, he looked like the younger brother Gabriel remembered.
Not the mysterious man who disappeared.
Not the person hiding secrets.
Just Adrian.
The man who always carried too much.
"I did bring her there."
The room went silent.
Gabriel's face changed.
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
But Gabriel raised his hand.
"No."
He stared at Adrian.
"Explain."
Adrian took a breath.
"Because Vincent already had her."
Gabriel froze.
"What?"
"Vincent found Lily before we did."
Adrian looked at the security screen.
"The message. The cameras. The threats. They were all designed to make you think the danger was inside the house."
A pause.
"But the danger was moving her."
Gabriel's mind raced.
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
"Because Vincent had someone watching you."
"Who?"
Adrian looked toward the door.
Nobody answered.
Then Clara spoke.
"Your mother."
Gabriel turned.
Again.
Another impossible truth.
Another person who was supposed to be gone.
"My mother is dead."
Clara shook her head.
"No."
Her voice was softer.
"Your mother disappeared."
Gabriel stared.
"What are you saying?"
Clara walked toward the table.
She picked up the final recording device.
"Your father discovered Vincent's plan years ago."
She pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then an older voice appeared.
Their father.
"If you are hearing this, Gabriel, then I failed you."
Gabriel closed his eyes.
He had heard that voice in his dreams.
Sometimes as comfort.
Sometimes as pain.
The recording continued.
"I spent my life believing fear could protect my family."
A pause.
"I was wrong."
The sound crackled.
"Vincent wanted control of everything I built."
Another pause.
"But I discovered something worse."
Gabriel looked at the speaker.
"He didn't want my empire."
The recording continued.
"He wanted my children."
Everyone froze.
"Adrian was the first one he tried to remove."
Gabriel looked at his brother.
"Then Clara."
A pause.
"Then Lily."
The room became silent.
Gabriel felt anger rising.
Not the cold anger he used in business.
Something deeper.
Something personal.
"He targeted my children."
Adrian nodded.
"Yes."
Gabriel looked at him.
"And you knew."
"I found out after Lily was born."
"Why didn't you come back?"
Adrian looked away.
"Because Vincent controlled everyone around you."
Gabriel shook his head.
"No."
Adrian looked at him.
"He controlled your mother."
The words stopped him.
The recording continued.
"Gabriel, if you are listening, your mother is alive."
Gabriel stepped back.
The world seemed to slow.
His mother.
Alive.
After all these years.
"She knew Vincent's plan."
The recording continued.
"She disappeared because she was protecting you."
Gabriel stared at the floor.
For years, he believed he had lost both parents.
First his mother.
Then his father.
Then Adrian.
His entire life had been built around people leaving him.
But the truth was different.
They had been fighting.
Without him.
The recording ended.
Silence returned.
Then Marcus's phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed immediately.
"Boss."
Gabriel looked at him.
"What?"
"We found the location."
"Where?"
Marcus hesitated.
"The old Moretti estate."
Gabriel understood.
The place where he grew up.
The place his father left behind.
The place nobody had entered since his mother's disappearance.
"We go now."
Nobody argued.
The drive took forty minutes.
But to Gabriel, it felt longer than eight years.
The old estate stood outside the city.
Forgotten.
Covered by trees.
A place frozen in time.
When Gabriel stepped through the entrance, memories attacked him.
The staircase where Adrian broke his arm as a child.
The dining room where his father announced business decisions.
The hallway where his mother used to wait for them after school.
The home he abandoned.
The home that held every secret.
Adrian walked beside him.
"I never wanted you to come back here."
Gabriel looked at him.
"I know."
A pause.
"But you knew I had to."
Adrian nodded.
They reached the old study.
The same room where their father kept his private records.
Gabriel opened the door.
Inside was a single chair.
A desk.
And a locked drawer.
Clara stepped forward.
"Your father told me about this."
Gabriel looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because he knew one day you would find out."
She handed him a key.
Gabriel unlocked the drawer.
Inside was a small box.
No documents.
No money.
Only a video recorder.
And a photograph.
The photograph showed his entire family.
His father.
His mother.
Adrian.
Clara.
Himself.
And Lily.
But the picture was impossible.
Because Lily was not a newborn.
She was standing.
Walking.
Years before anyone knew she could.
Gabriel picked up the recorder.
A final message.
From his father.
He pressed play.
The screen flickered.
Then his father's face appeared.
Older.
Tired.
Broken.
"Gabriel."
A pause.
"If you are seeing this, then you finally know."
His father looked directly into the camera.
"I lied to you."
Gabriel stared.
"I made you believe strength meant never trusting anyone."
A pause.
"But I was wrong."
The old man lowered his eyes.
"Your greatest strength was always your heart."
Gabriel said nothing.
"Vincent wanted you to become like me."
A pause.
"Cold."
Another pause.
"Alone."
His father's voice became emotional.
"But Lily saved you before you even knew you needed saving."
Gabriel looked away.
Because that was true.
The child he thought he needed to protect...
had protected him.
The recording continued.
"The final piece of evidence is not here."
Gabriel frowned.
"What?"
His father's voice continued.
"It is with the person Vincent feared most."
The screen flickered.
The final words appeared.
"Your mother."
The recording stopped.
Everyone looked at Gabriel.
Then the front door of the old estate opened.
Slowly.
Nobody had entered.
Nobody had called.
A shadow appeared in the hallway.
Gabriel reached for his weapon.
The person stepped forward.
May you like
And a familiar voice whispered:
"Gabriel... I have been waiting twenty years to tell you why I left."
