Chapter 5 - The Brother Who Was Never Alone

A dead man appeared on a security camera and whispered:

"Gabriel, you were looking in the wrong place."

When Gabriel Moretti watched the footage again, he saw his brother standing inside the mansion.

The timestamp showed eight years after Adrian's funeral.

The camera had recorded one impossible thing.

Adrian Moretti was alive.

Nobody spoke.

The security room was silent except for the faint hum of the computers.

Gabriel stood in front of the monitor.

Unable to move.

Unable to breathe.

Because the man on the screen was not a stranger.

Not a look-alike.

Not someone who shared the same face.

It was Adrian.

His brother.

The same dark hair.

The same scar above his eyebrow.

The same expression he wore whenever he knew something Gabriel didn't.

For eight years, Gabriel had carried the memory of his brother's funeral.

The coffin.

The flowers.

The empty feeling of losing the only person who could challenge him without fear.

And now...

Adrian was standing inside his house.

Alive.

Marcus looked at him carefully.

"Boss..."

Gabriel raised his hand.

He didn't want anyone to speak.

The video continued.

Adrian stood outside Lily's nursery.

He looked directly into the camera.

Not accidentally.

Not because he noticed it.

Because he knew exactly where it was.

Then his lips moved.

The audio was damaged.

But one word was clear.

"Gabriel."

The screen went black.

Gabriel stared at it.

"Play it again."

Marcus immediately restarted the footage.

Again.

The same moment.

The same face.

The same impossible truth.

Gabriel stepped back.

"No."

Emma stood behind him.

Her face was pale.

She looked like she had been expecting this moment.

"You knew."

Gabriel didn't look at her.

"You knew he was alive."

Emma swallowed.

"I knew he survived."

The room changed.

Gabriel slowly turned.

"Survived?"

His voice was quiet.

Dangerously quiet.

"Explain that sentence."

Emma looked at Lily.

The little girl was holding Sophia's hand.

She shouldn't have been hearing this.

She shouldn't have been anywhere near this.

Gabriel noticed.

"Take them upstairs."

Emma nodded.

But before she moved, Lily reached for Gabriel.

"Daddy."

He looked down.

"Is Uncle Adrian bad?"

The question stopped him.

Because children didn't understand lies.

They only understood feelings.

And Lily already knew something was wrong.

Gabriel crouched.

"No."

He looked toward the monitor.

"Uncle Adrian wasn't bad."

A pause.

"But someone wanted me to think he was gone."

Lily didn't understand.

But she held his hand.

That small gesture reminded Gabriel of something.

This was no longer about revenge.

No longer about business.

This was about protecting his family.

After Emma took the girls upstairs, Gabriel returned to the security room.

Marcus closed the door.

"Boss, I checked the footage."

"And?"

"The camera was not recording live."

Gabriel looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

"It means someone uploaded this manually."

Marcus placed another file on the desk.

"The video was inserted into the system three minutes before we watched it."

Gabriel opened the file.

The source location appeared.

His expression changed.

"Inside the house?"

Marcus nodded.

"Yes."

Gabriel looked around the room.

Someone had access.

Someone was controlling what he saw.

Someone wanted him to discover Adrian.

But why?

A message appeared on the monitor.

Everyone froze.

No one touched the keyboard.

No one moved.

The message typed itself.

ONE BROTHER DIED.

ONE BROTHER HID.

FIND THE ROOM HE NEVER LEFT.

Gabriel stared.

A room.

Adrian never left.

His mind searched through memories.

The old mansion.

The previous house.

The places they grew up.

Then he remembered.

There was one room nobody had entered in years.

The underground study.

The room Adrian used before his death.

A room Gabriel had sealed after the funeral.

Because everything inside reminded him of his brother.

"Marcus."

"Yes?"

"Open the old study."

Marcus hesitated.

"Boss, that room was locked after..."

"I know."

Gabriel walked toward the exit.

"Open it."

The underground study was beneath the east wing.

A place only three people knew existed.

Gabriel.

Adrian.

And their father.

The door was made of reinforced steel.

Not because it held valuable items.

Because Adrian had always been paranoid.

Gabriel used to make fun of him.

"You're building a fortress inside a fortress."

Adrian had smiled.

"One day you'll understand."

Gabriel hated that he was starting to.

Marcus entered the code.

The lock clicked.

The door opened slowly.

Dust covered everything.

The room looked untouched.

A desk.

Bookshelves.

Old photographs.

A broken lamp.

Nothing unusual.

Until Gabriel noticed something.

A chair.

Placed in front of the desk.

Facing the wall.

Not the room.

The wall.

He walked closer.

There was a small mark near the floor.

A hidden button.

Marcus reached for it.

Gabriel stopped him.

"No."

He pressed it himself.

A section of the wall moved.

Behind it was a hidden compartment.

Inside was a small box.

No lock.

No label.

Only one word written on top.

"Lily."

Gabriel froze.

Emma, standing behind him, covered her mouth.

"Adrian knew."

Gabriel opened the box.

Inside were documents.

Medical reports.

Photographs.

A small recording device.

And a letter.

His hands shook slightly as he opened it.

Gabriel,

If you found this, then you finally know someone has been lying to you.

The doctors were wrong.

Lily was never born with a condition they couldn't explain.

Someone caused it.

Someone close to us.

Gabriel stopped.

His eyes moved faster.

The person responsible has been watching our family since before the girls were born.

They know about Lily.

They know about Sophia.

And they know your weakness.

Your children.

The letter continued.

I couldn't tell you because you would have destroyed everyone involved before finding the truth.

And the truth is more dangerous than revenge.

Gabriel lowered the paper.

A cold feeling moved through him.

Because Adrian knew him.

Better than anyone.

He knew Gabriel would burn the world down.

The recording device caught his attention.

He pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then Adrian's voice appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

"Gabriel."

Everyone froze.

"I know you think I betrayed you."

Gabriel closed his eyes.

Adrian continued.

"I know you believe I died."

A pause.

"But the truth is..."

The recording cut.

Static.

Then silence.

Marcus checked the device.

"Battery failure."

Gabriel looked at him.

"Can you recover it?"

Marcus nodded.

"It will take time."

Gabriel picked up the documents.

He scanned through the medical reports.

The names.

The signatures.

The dates.

Then he saw one name repeated.

The same person.

On every document.

Every approval.

Every medical decision.

His expression changed.

Because the person who controlled Lily's treatment had been someone Gabriel trusted completely.

Someone who had been inside his home.

Someone who had looked him in the eyes while hiding the truth.

Emma saw his face.

"What is it?"

Gabriel didn't answer.

He couldn't.

Because the name on the document belonged to the person who had raised him after his parents died.

The person he had called family.

The person he never suspected.

His phone suddenly vibrated.

Unknown number.

One message.

A photograph.

Gabriel opened it.

His blood turned cold.

It showed Adrian standing outside the mansion.

Taken that morning.

And beneath the image were five words:

"He is coming for Lily."
