Chapter 6 - The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

A little girl pointed at the window and whispered:
"Daddy... Uncle Adrian is outside."
When Gabriel Moretti rushed upstairs, he found the nursery window slightly open.
On the floor was an old photograph.
A picture of Adrian holding baby Lily.
Written on the back were four words:
"She knows the truth."
Gabriel suddenly realized someone had been inside the room.
The first thing Gabriel felt was not anger.
It was fear.
Not for himself.
Never for himself.
For Lily.
He crossed the hallway faster than anyone could follow.
Behind him, Marcus shouted orders.
"Lock every entrance!"
"Nobody leaves the property!"
The mansion transformed within seconds.
Guards moved through corridors.
Security systems activated.
Doors sealed.
But Gabriel barely heard any of it.
All he saw was Lily's room.
The room where his daughter slept.
The room where someone had entered.
Again.
He pushed the door open.
"Lily?"
The little girl sat on her bed.
Sophia was beside her, holding her stuffed rabbit.
Emma stood near the window.
Her face was pale.
Gabriel immediately noticed something.
Emma wasn't looking at him.
She was looking at the open window.
"Who opened this?"
Nobody answered.
Gabriel walked closer.
The window was unlocked.
A cold breeze moved the curtains.
On the floor beneath it was a photograph.
Old.
Damaged.
He picked it up.
The moment he saw it, his entire body froze.
Adrian.
Holding Lily.
Not a newborn picture.
Not from the hospital.
A recent picture.
A picture taken after Adrian's supposed death.
Gabriel turned it over.
Four words.
She knows the truth.
His fingers tightened.
"Who put this here?"
Emma stepped forward.
"I don't know."
Gabriel looked at her.
"You knew Adrian was alive."
"Yes."
"And you didn't tell me."
Emma lowered her eyes.
"Because he made me promise."
Gabriel's expression hardened.
"Everyone keeps saying Adrian asked them to protect me."
A pause.
"But nobody tells me what they are protecting me from."
Emma didn't answer.
Because she knew the truth.
And Gabriel hated that.
He hated being the last person to know what was happening in his own life.
A sound came from the hallway.
A small voice.
"Daddy?"
Gabriel turned.
Lily was watching him.
Her eyes moved to the photograph.
Then back to him.
"Is Uncle Adrian coming home?"
The question destroyed the anger on Gabriel's face.
Because Lily wasn't afraid.
She was hopeful.
And that made everything worse.
Gabriel walked toward her.
"Why do you think that?"
Lily touched her small chest.
"Because Emma said he loved me."
Gabriel looked at Emma.
Emma went silent.
"What did you tell her?"
Emma swallowed.
"Only the truth."
Gabriel's voice lowered.
"Which truth?"
Emma looked at Lily.
"That Adrian never stopped trying to protect her."
For years, Gabriel believed his brother abandoned him.
Believed Adrian had made mistakes.
Believed the funeral had been the end.
But now every piece of evidence told a different story.
Adrian had been fighting.
Alone.
And Gabriel had been too angry to see it.
Later that night, Gabriel returned to the underground study.
The documents from Adrian's hidden room covered the desk.
Medical records.
Financial reports.
Security files.
Everything Adrian had collected.
Marcus stood beside him.
"We searched the entire property."
"And?"
"No sign of Adrian."
Gabriel looked at the photograph.
"He was here."
Marcus nodded.
"We know."
"Then find out how."
Marcus hesitated.
"There is something strange."
Gabriel looked up.
"What?"
"The cameras."
"What about them?"
"They recorded someone entering the mansion."
Gabriel waited.
"Show me."
Marcus turned the monitor.
The footage appeared.
A person walking through the east entrance.
The quality was poor.
The face was hidden.
But the movement was familiar.
Gabriel leaned closer.
The person stopped near the security camera.
Slowly looked up.
Then removed their hood.
Gabriel stopped.
Because the face appeared clearly.
Adrian.
Alive.
The footage continued.
Adrian walked toward the nursery.
Then stopped.
He looked directly at the camera.
As if he knew Gabriel would watch it.
Then Adrian spoke.
The audio was damaged.
But one sentence remained.
"Your father knew."
Gabriel froze.
His father.
A man who had died twelve years ago.
A man who had built the Moretti empire.
A man who had taught Gabriel never to trust anyone.
"What did he mean?"
Marcus shook his head.
"I don't know."
Gabriel replayed the footage.
Again.
Again.
Your father knew.
The words stayed in his mind.
Because if his father knew...
Then this secret was older than Adrian's death.
Older than Lily's birth.
Maybe older than Gabriel becoming the head of the family.
He opened the old documents again.
This time searching for one thing.
His father's name.
After several minutes, he found it.
A medical report.
A financial transfer.
A private meeting record.
All connected.
All hidden.
All signed by one person.
His father.
Gabriel stepped back.
For the first time, the empire he inherited felt unfamiliar.
His phone rang.
Emma.
He answered.
"What happened?"
Her voice was shaking.
"Gabriel..."
He froze.
She had never called him that before.
Not Mr. Moretti.
Not boss.
Gabriel.
"What?"
"I found something in Lily's room."
He immediately stood.
"What?"
"A drawing."
Silence.
"Emma."
"You need to see it."
Minutes later, Gabriel entered the nursery.
Emma held a piece of paper.
A child's drawing.
At first glance, it looked normal.
A house.
Three people.
A sun.
A child.
Then Gabriel noticed the details.
There were actually four people.
One adult man standing outside the house.
A dark figure near the window.
And above him...
A name.
Adrian.
Gabriel looked at Lily.
"When did you draw this?"
Lily looked confused.
"Yesterday."
"Why did you draw Uncle Adrian outside?"
The little girl looked at him.
"Because he told me not to open the door."
Gabriel's blood went cold.
"When?"
Lily pointed toward the hallway.
"Last night."
Emma covered her mouth.
Gabriel slowly turned.
"What door?"
Lily pointed toward the end of the hallway.
"The secret one."
Nobody moved.
Because there was only one secret door in the mansion.
The old passage Adrian built.
The passage nobody had used for years.
Gabriel walked toward it.
Marcus followed.
The hidden entrance was behind an old painting.
The same place Adrian used when they were children.
Gabriel removed the painting.
A small metal door appeared.
It had never been opened.
Until now.
Marcus scanned it.
"No lock."
Gabriel looked confused.
Then he noticed something.
A fingerprint panel.
The system activated.
A green light appeared.
ACCESS GRANTED.
Marcus stepped back.
"Boss..."
Gabriel reached for the handle.
The door opened slowly.
May you like
Inside was a dark room.
And someone was breathing.
