Chapter 7 - The Man Hidden Beneath the House

A man stepped out of the darkness and whispered:

"Gabriel... you took too long."

When Gabriel Moretti entered the hidden room beneath his mansion, he found his missing brother sitting beside old family records.

On the table was a blood-stained document.

Adrian's name was written across the top.

And beneath it was their father's final order.

Gabriel suddenly realized the truth had been buried with the wrong man.

For several seconds, Gabriel couldn't move.

The hidden room was small.

Cold.

Forgotten.

The air smelled like dust and old paper.

But none of that mattered.

Because sitting in front of him was the man he had buried eight years ago.

Adrian Moretti.

Alive.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Marcus immediately reached for his weapon.

Gabriel stopped him.

"No."

His voice was barely above a whisper.

Because despite everything...

Despite the lies.

Despite the secrets.

Despite the impossible situation.

A part of Gabriel was still looking at his little brother.

The person who used to steal food from his plate.

The person who laughed when Gabriel took life too seriously.

The person who once told him:

"One day, you're going to forget you're human."

Adrian looked at him.

And Gabriel saw something unexpected.

Regret.

"You're angry."

Gabriel stared.

"Eight years."

The words came out slowly.

"Eight years, Adrian."

Adrian lowered his eyes.

"I know."

"You let me bury you."

"I had no choice."

Gabriel stepped closer.

"No choice?"

His voice sharpened.

"You watched me believe you were dead."

Adrian didn't respond.

"You watched me raise this family thinking I lost you."

A pause.

"You watched me suffer."

Adrian looked up.

"And if I had come back, you would have died."

The room became silent.

Gabriel hated that answer.

Because it sounded like something Adrian would say.

Always protecting people.

Always making decisions alone.

Always believing he had to carry everything.

"Explain."

Adrian looked toward the documents on the table.

"Before I do, you need to understand one thing."

Gabriel waited.

"Father knew."

The same words from the camera.

The same words that had haunted him.

Gabriel's expression hardened.

"My father died."

"Yes."

"And he knew about Lily?"

Adrian nodded.

"He knew before she was born."

Gabriel felt anger rising.

"How?"

Adrian took a breath.

"Because he was involved."

The words hit harder than any weapon.

Gabriel stepped back.

"No."

"Gabriel—"

"No."

His voice became colder.

"My father protected this family."

Adrian looked at him.

"Did he?"

That question stayed between them.

Because Gabriel had spent his entire life believing his father was a powerful man who built an empire.

A man who taught him strength.

A man who never made mistakes.

But now every secret pointed back to him.

Adrian reached for a folder.

"This is why I disappeared."

He opened it.

Inside were medical records.

The same records Gabriel had found earlier.

"Lily's condition wasn't an accident."

Gabriel looked down.

"Who did this?"

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he pulled out another document.

A research report.

A private medical program.

A list of names.

Gabriel scanned the page.

Then stopped.

One name.

The same name appearing everywhere.

Dr. Victor Hale.

Gabriel knew him.

Of course he did.

Victor Hale had been the family's private physician for twenty years.

He treated Gabriel when he was injured.

He treated his father.

He treated Lily after birth.

Gabriel's hand tightened around the paper.

"No."

Adrian nodded.

"Yes."

"He saved my daughter's life."

Adrian looked at him.

"That's what he wanted you to believe."

The room felt smaller.

Gabriel looked at Emma.

She stood near the entrance, silent.

"You knew."

Emma nodded.

"I knew Dr. Hale was involved."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Adrian told me you wouldn't listen."

Gabriel looked at Adrian.

"And he was right?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Because they both knew.

Eight years ago, Gabriel would have destroyed everything before finding proof.

He would have gone after anyone connected.

Including innocent people.

That was why Adrian hid.

Not because he didn't trust Gabriel.

Because he knew Gabriel too well.

Adrian picked up another item from the table.

A small recording device.

"This is the last thing I recovered before they found me."

Gabriel looked at it.

"Who found you?"

Adrian's face changed.

"The people who killed my identity."

A pause.

"Not my body."

Gabriel understood.

Someone wanted the world to believe Adrian was dead.

Someone powerful enough to erase a person.

Someone close enough to control the story.

Adrian pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then an older voice appeared.

Gabriel immediately recognized it.

Their father.

"If you're hearing this, then Adrian failed to stop you from discovering the truth."

Gabriel froze.

His father's voice continued.

"I made mistakes."

A pause.

"But the greatest mistake was believing I could control dangerous people forever."

The recording crackled.

"The person who betrayed this family is not an enemy."

Gabriel leaned closer.

"They are family."

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Marcus looked at Gabriel.

"Who?"

Gabriel didn't answer.

Because there were too many possibilities.

Too many people.

Too many years of trust.

Adrian watched him carefully.

"There is one more thing."

Gabriel looked at him.

"What?"

Adrian reached into the folder.

He pulled out a photograph.

A family photograph.

Old.

Gabriel recognized it immediately.

Their father.

Their mother.

Adrian.

Himself.

And someone else.

A child.

A girl.

Gabriel stared.

"Who is that?"

Adrian's expression became serious.

"Someone your father tried to hide."

Gabriel looked closer.

The girl had familiar eyes.

The same eyes as Lily.

The same eyes as Sophia.

His heart slowed.

"No."

Adrian nodded.

"Yes."

Before Gabriel could speak, the lights in the hidden room suddenly turned off.

Everyone froze.

Marcus immediately raised his weapon.

The emergency lights flickered on.

Red.

Dark.

Warning lights.

Then a sound came from above.

Footsteps.

Someone was walking through the mansion.

Adrian looked toward the ceiling.

His expression changed.

"He found us."

Gabriel looked at him.

"Who?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Because he already knew.

The hidden room door behind them slowly moved.

Nobody had touched it.

The lock clicked.

Once.

Twice.

Then opened.

May you like

And the person standing outside whispered:

"Gabriel."
