Chapter 3 - The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

A man stood outside the locked door, breathing heavily: "Isabella... open the door." When Adrian Vale's missing brother Daniel appeared after being declared dead eight years earlier, he carried an old family photograph with a burned corner. On the back of the photograph were four words: "Your father lied first." I suddenly realized this was never just about Adrian.

I couldn't move.

I couldn't even breathe.

The voice outside the door belonged to someone who shouldn't exist.

The stranger beside me looked like he had seen a ghost.

And maybe he had.

Because the name that appeared on my phone screen was not just a name.

It was a memory.

A warning.

A wound Adrian had spent years trying to bury.

Daniel Vale.

Adrian's older brother.

The man everyone believed died eight years ago.

The man Adrian never spoke about.

The man whose death changed him forever.

I stared at the stranger.

"Tell me this isn't real."

He didn't answer.

That terrified me more than anything.

Because if he had laughed, if he had told me I was wrong, maybe I could have convinced myself this was some kind of mistake.

But he didn't.

He just whispered:

"Adrian needs to know you're alive."

My eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?"

The stranger looked toward the door.

"It means the person outside isn't the only danger."

A sudden knock came again.

Slow.

Controlled.

Not the kind of knock someone made when they wanted to be invited inside.

The kind of knock someone made when they already knew they belonged there.

"Isabella."

The voice came again.

Calm.

Familiar.

Impossible.

I stepped closer to the door.

The stranger grabbed my arm.

"Don't."

I looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because if that's really Daniel..."

He stopped.

I waited.

"What?"

His grip tightened.

"Then Adrian's entire world is about to collapse."

The hallway became silent.

Then came a sound.

A photograph sliding under the door.

The stranger released me.

Slowly, I walked toward it.

My hands trembled as I picked it up.

It was old.

The edges were damaged.

Three people stood in the picture.

A younger Adrian.

A younger Daniel.

And their father.

The same man Adrian always described as a successful businessman who died too early.

But something was wrong.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written a message.

Four words.

Your father lied first.

My stomach turned.

I looked at the stranger.

"Who are you?"

He remained silent.

"I asked you who you are."

He finally answered.

"My name is Victor."

The name meant nothing to me.

But his expression told me it should.

"I worked for Adrian's father."

I stared at him.

"You worked for the man who lied?"

Victor looked down.

"I worked for the man who taught Adrian how to survive."

I looked again at the photograph.

"Why would Daniel send this?"

Victor walked closer.

"Because Daniel knows what happened that night."

"What night?"

"The night Adrian's father died."

I felt a chill.

"Adrian told me it was an accident."

Victor looked at me.

"That's the story everyone was given."

The room felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

I had spent five years married to a man whose life was built on secrets.

But I never imagined the secrets went this deep.

I looked at my phone again.

The unknown message was still there.

Daniel Vale.

I touched the screen.

A second message appeared.

This time, there was no name.

Only words.

"Ask Isabella about the night she was chosen."

My heart stopped.

Chosen.

The word made no sense.

I looked at Victor.

"What does that mean?"

Before he could answer, the door handle moved.

Someone was trying to open it.

Victor immediately turned off the lights.

"Stay quiet."

I stood in darkness.

My heartbeat felt louder than the rain outside.

The lock clicked.

Once.

Twice.

Then the door opened.

A man stepped inside.

The first thing I noticed was his eyes.

Because they looked exactly like Adrian's.

Same intensity.

Same coldness.

Same pain.

But older.

Tired.

Carrying years of anger.

He looked directly at me.

And I knew.

This was Daniel Vale.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel looked at the bracelet in my hand.

His expression changed.

"You found it."

I swallowed.

"You put the message inside?"

Daniel walked closer.

"No."

He looked at Victor.

"He did."

Victor lowered his head.

I looked between them.

"Then why?"

Daniel ignored the question.

Instead, he reached into his coat and removed a small envelope.

He placed it on the table.

"This belonged to your husband."

I froze.

"Adrian?"

Daniel nodded.

"He wrote this eight years ago."

"Why would he write something for me eight years ago?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Because he already knew you would become part of this."

The words made no sense.

I shook my head.

"No."

Daniel didn't react.

"You think Adrian chose you because he loved you."

My chest tightened.

"He did love me."

Daniel looked away.

"I know."

The answer surprised me.

Because there was no anger in his voice.

Only sadness.

"He loved you more than anything."

I stared at him.

"Then why did he push me away?"

Daniel looked at the envelope.

"Because Adrian discovered the truth about our father."

He paused.

"And because someone inside his own organization was trying to use you to destroy him."

I felt a wave of confusion.

"Who?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he pushed the envelope toward me.

"Read it."

I opened it.

Inside was a single page.

Adrian's handwriting.

My hands shook as I recognized it.

Isabella,

If you are reading this, then I failed to keep you away from the truth.

I stopped.

My eyes moved across the page.

I read every word.

And every sentence made my heart hurt more.

He had known.

He had known something would happen.

He had known I would eventually discover everything.

But the last line was what destroyed me.

Because Adrian had written:

"The person who betrayed me is the person you trust the most."

I looked up.

"Who?"

Nobody answered.

Victor looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked at the door.

And suddenly, I understood.

This wasn't just about Adrian's father.

This wasn't just about a dead brother returning.

Someone close to us had been hiding everything.

Someone who had access to our lives.

Someone who knew every move Adrian made.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A new message appeared.

This time from Adrian.

I opened it immediately.

Only one sentence.

"Isabella, run."

I looked at the door.

Then I heard footsteps outside.

Not one person.

Several.

Daniel's face changed.

For the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.

He whispered:

"They found us."

May you like

The door handle slowly began to turn.

And on the other side of the door, someone whispered Adrian's name.
