Chapter 7 - The Person Behind The Plan

A woman stepped into the underground room holding an old family ledger: "Isabella, you were never supposed to survive that night." When Isabella Moretti discovered the ledger contained every detail of her relationship with Adrian before they ever met, she found a page marked with her wedding date. Written beneath it were five words: "The final piece arrived." I finally understood someone had been controlling my life from the beginning.
The woman standing in the doorway looked at all of us.
She wasn't holding a weapon.
She didn't need one.
The expression on her face was enough.
Everyone in that room knew her.
Everyone except me.
Michael moved first.
He stepped between me and the entrance.
"Stay away from her."
The woman smiled.
A small, almost disappointed smile.
"Still protecting people who don't know the truth, Michael?"
My eyes moved between them.
Another person.
Another secret.
Another piece of Adrian's life I had never heard about.
"Who is she?"
Nobody answered.
That was becoming the pattern of my new reality.
Everyone knew.
Everyone understood.
Everyone except me.
The woman walked closer.
She was older.
Elegant.
Calm.
She carried herself like someone who had spent her entire life controlling rooms without raising her voice.
Then she looked directly at me.
"Isabella."
Hearing my name from her mouth made me uncomfortable.
Like she had known me longer than she should have.
"You look exactly like your mother."
The room changed instantly.
I froze.
"My mother?"
I had not heard that word connected to my name in years.
My mother died when I was young.
At least, that's what I had always believed.
The woman placed an old ledger on the table.
"Your mother knew the truth."
I stared at the book.
"What truth?"
She looked at Michael.
Then Daniel.
Then Lauren.
"You all failed to tell her."
Daniel's face hardened.
"You don't get to act like you care about Isabella."
The woman ignored him.
She opened the ledger.
Inside were handwritten notes.
Dates.
Names.
Locations.
My name appeared over and over again.
I stepped closer.
The first page was dated eight years ago.
The same year before I met Adrian.
The same year everything supposedly began.
I read the words.
"Subject: Isabella Moretti."
My hands started shaking.
Subject.
Not person.
Not woman.
Subject.
Like I was an experiment.
Like I was a plan.
"Who wrote this?"
The woman looked at me.
"Adrian's father."
My heart sank.
"But he died."
She smiled sadly.
"That is what Adrian believed."
Nobody moved.
The room became silent.
I looked at Daniel.
"Is he alive?"
Daniel looked away.
That was enough.
I stepped back.
"No."
My voice became quieter.
"No, that can't be true."
Michael walked toward me.
"Isabella..."
I raised my hand.
"No."
I looked at everyone.
"Stop saying my name like you understand what this feels like."
Nobody spoke.
Because they didn't.
They couldn't.
Five years.
Five years I had built my life around a man who I thought had shown me everything.
But the truth was buried beneath layers of secrets.
And everyone had helped bury it.
The woman opened another page.
"This was the original plan."
I looked down.
There was a timeline.
Adrian's father.
Lauren.
Michael.
Even my name.
But one thing stood out.
A date.
The day Adrian and I first met.
I pointed at it.
"Why is this here?"
The woman answered.
"Because that wasn't the day Adrian found you."
She paused.
"It was the day he was supposed to find you."
I felt sick.
The difference between those two sentences changed everything.
"Who arranged it?"
Nobody answered.
The woman closed the ledger.
"Your mother."
I looked up.
"What?"
The room went silent.
The woman continued.
"Your mother discovered Adrian's father's plan years before anyone else."
I shook my head.
"My mother wasn't involved with people like this."
The woman looked at me.
"Your mother was the reason Adrian survived."
I couldn't process it.
Every memory I had was being rewritten.
Every person I trusted had another version of themselves hidden underneath.
The woman continued.
"Your mother knew Adrian's father wanted to use you."
"Then why did she allow it?"
The woman's expression changed.
"Because she knew Adrian would be the only person who could protect you."
I laughed.
A broken laugh.
"So my mother planned my marriage too?"
"No."
Her answer was immediate.
"Your mother planned your survival."
That sentence stayed with me.
Because for the first time, someone wasn't talking about controlling me.
They were talking about saving me.
But I still had one question.
"Where is my mother now?"
The woman looked away.
Nobody wanted to answer.
And that frightened me.
More than any secret.
More than any lie.
Because everyone had the same expression.
The expression people wore when they knew something impossible.
Finally, Daniel spoke.
"Isabella..."
I looked at him.
"Your mother didn't die."
The world seemed to stop.
I couldn't hear anything else.
Not the voices.
Not the rain outside.
Not my own breathing.
"What did you say?"
Daniel looked at the ground.
"Your mother disappeared."
I stared at him.
"For how long?"
"Twenty years."
I shook my head.
"No."
Michael stepped closer.
"It's true."
I looked at him.
"You knew?"
He didn't answer.
And that answer hurt.
I turned away.
Because I couldn't look at them anymore.
Then the computer screen turned back on.
The frozen video of Adrian continued.
Everyone looked.
The image showed Adrian sitting alone.
His face was serious.
His eyes looked exhausted.
"If you are seeing this..."
He stopped.
Then he looked directly into the camera.
"...then you have met the person who started everything."
The camera moved slightly.
Someone was standing beside him.
A woman.
Only half her face was visible.
But I knew that face.
I knew that voice.
Because it was impossible.
Adrian continued.
"Isabella, there is something I never told you."
The video paused.
Then played again.
"My father didn't choose you."
A second pause.
"I did."
My breath caught.
The woman beside Adrian stepped forward.
The camera finally showed her face.
I dropped the ledger.
Because I knew her.
Not from photographs.
Not from stories.
From memories.
From a voice I hadn't heard since childhood.
The woman on the screen looked exactly like the person I had spent my entire life believing was gone.
My phone suddenly vibrated.
One message appeared.
From Adrian.
Only four words.
"She is coming home."
May you like
The underground door behind us slowly opened.
And the woman standing there whispered my name.
