Chapter 1 - The Message Sent to the Wrong Man

A woman stood outside her bedroom door, holding her phone with shaking hands, whispering: "I heard everything..."

When Harper Quinn arrived home early, she discovered a hidden phone containing proof of her fiancé's betrayal.

But one message was already sent to the wrong number.

The person who replied was not who she expected.

Harper had always believed the worst moments in life arrived with warning signs.

A phone call.

A strange conversation.

A feeling that something was wrong.

But the truth was much crueler.

Sometimes the moment that destroyed everything happened quietly.

Sometimes it began with a simple mistake.

I had only planned to surprise Ethan.

That was what I kept telling myself.

It was supposed to be a happy afternoon.

I had finished my work earlier than expected, and I carried a small paper bag from his favorite restaurant because I wanted to celebrate our anniversary a few days early.

Ethan always told me he hated surprises.

But I knew him.

Or at least I thought I did.

I walked into our apartment quietly, expecting to find him working in the living room.

Instead, I heard laughter.

A woman's laughter.

A laugh I knew better than anyone.

I stopped in the hallway.

My fingers tightened around the bag.

Because the voice coming from my bedroom belonged to Chloe.

My best friend.

The woman who had stood beside me when Ethan proposed.

The woman who hugged me and cried when I showed her my engagement ring.

The woman who told me I was the luckiest woman alive.

I slowly walked closer.

The door was slightly open.

And then I heard Ethan's voice.

"I told you, Harper will never know."

My heart stopped.

I didn't cry.

Not yet.

I didn't scream.

I didn't open the door.

I just stood there.

Listening to the two people I trusted most destroy everything I believed.

Chloe laughed softly.

"She really thinks you love her."

Those words hurt more than anything else.

Because they were not angry.

They were casual.

Like my pain was a joke.

Like my entire relationship was nothing more than entertainment.

I lifted my phone.

My hands were shaking, but I pressed record.

I needed proof.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because a part of me still couldn't believe what I was hearing.

I captured the moment Ethan touched Chloe's hand.

I captured their conversation.

I captured the truth.

Then I walked away.

I didn't confront them.

Not because I was weak.

Because I suddenly realized something.

The man I planned to marry was not the man I thought he was.

I went to my car and sat there for almost twenty minutes.

The world around me continued moving.

People walked past.

Cars drove by.

Everyone lived normally.

But my life had just broken apart.

I opened my phone.

I wanted to send the evidence to my sister.

I wanted someone I trusted to know.

But my hands were trembling.

I clicked the wrong contact.

And sent everything to a number I didn't recognize.

A photo.

A video.

A message.

Three seconds later, I realized my mistake.

"Oh no..."

I tried deleting it.

Too late.

The message was delivered.

I expected nothing.

Maybe the person would ignore it.

Maybe they would think it was a prank.

Then my phone vibrated.

Unknown Number:

"Who is this?"

I stared at the screen.

My first instinct was to apologize.

But before I could type, another message appeared.

Unknown Number:

"Where are you right now?"

My stomach tightened.

I didn't understand.

Why would a stranger care?

I typed:

"Sorry. I sent this to the wrong person."

The reply came instantly.

Unknown Number:

"No. You need to listen carefully."

I froze.

Another message appeared.

Unknown Number:

"Do not go home."

I looked toward my apartment building.

My heart started beating faster.

How did he know?

I typed:

"Who are you?"

The answer came after a long pause.

Unknown Number:

"The man who just received evidence that someone close to you is planning something much worse than cheating."

I stopped breathing.

Because suddenly, this was no longer about betrayal.

Someone else was involved.

Someone dangerous.

The next message appeared.

Unknown Number:

"Harper, leave the area now."

I looked back at my apartment window.

The lights were still on.

Someone was inside.

Someone who thought I knew nothing.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown Number.

I answered.

A deep, calm voice spoke.

"Harper Quinn?"

"Yes."

"You don't know me."

I swallowed.

"Then tell me why I should listen to you."

The man was silent for a moment.

Then he said:

"Because the person you love is not the only person who lied to you."

My hand went cold.

"Who are you?"

Another silence.

Then:

"My name is Adrian Moretti."

The name meant nothing to me at first.

Until I heard the fear in his voice when someone nearby whispered it.

A name people knew.

A name people avoided.

A name connected to Chicago's most powerful underworld family.

I looked at my phone again.

I didn't know why.

But I believed him.

And that terrified me more than anything.

I drove away from my apartment.

I didn't know where I was going.

Only that I couldn't go home.

Not anymore.

Thirty minutes later, Adrian sent me one final message.

"Come to my office. Bring the original recording."

I stared at those words.

Because I finally understood.

The wrong number wasn't a mistake.

It was the beginning of something much bigger.

And when I arrived at Adrian Moretti's building, the security guard looked at me and said one sentence that made my blood run cold:

"Miss Quinn... he has been waiting for you since the moment he saw your name."

May you like

I reached for the office door.

It was already unlocked from the inside. Someone was waiting for me.
