Chapter 4 - The Enemy Inside Adrian’s Empire

A woman grabbed my arm in the darkness, whispering: "Don't trust anyone who says they came to save you." When Isabella Moretti discovered Adrian's private security file hidden inside an abandoned safe house, she found a photograph of herself taken years before she met him. On the back of the photo was a single sentence: "She was chosen before Adrian knew her." I suddenly realized my entire marriage had been planned by someone else.

The door handle stopped moving.

For a moment, nobody inside the room moved.

Nobody breathed.

The silence was worse than the footsteps outside.

Daniel stood frozen near the wall.

Victor reached inside his jacket.

I didn't know if he was reaching for a weapon or something else.

But I knew one thing.

Everyone in that room was afraid.

And the person outside the door was the reason.

The handle moved again.

Slowly.

A voice came from the hallway.

"Daniel."

My entire body went cold.

Because the voice wasn't angry.

It wasn't threatening.

It sounded calm.

Too calm.

Daniel looked at me.

"Stay behind me."

I almost laughed.

After everything I had discovered, after finding out my husband had hidden an entire world from me, I suddenly had three men telling me who to trust.

But none of them had answers.

I stepped back.

"Who is outside?"

Daniel didn't look away from the door.

"Someone who should never have found this place."

The lock clicked.

Victor whispered.

"We have seconds."

Daniel grabbed the envelope Adrian had written.

He folded it and put it inside his coat.

"Isabella, listen to me carefully."

I looked at him.

"If we leave this room, you cannot go back to your old life."

My heart tightened.

"My old life?"

Daniel looked at me.

"The life where you believed Adrian was just a powerful businessman."

A loud sound interrupted him.

The door shook.

Someone hit it from the other side.

Once.

Twice.

The old wooden frame cracked.

Victor moved toward the back wall.

"There is another exit."

I stared.

"Another exit?"

He nodded.

"Your husband prepared this place for emergencies."

That sentence stopped me.

"My husband knew about this place?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Adrian knew a lot of things."

The door shook again.

This time, part of the frame broke.

We moved quickly.

Victor opened a hidden panel behind a bookshelf.

A narrow passage appeared.

I stared at it.

"You expect me to believe Adrian built secret tunnels?"

Daniel looked at me sadly.

"I expect you to believe your husband was fighting a war you never knew existed."

The words followed me as we entered the passage.

The door behind us finally broke open.

I heard voices.

Several men.

Searching.

We moved through the dark hallway.

The air smelled old.

Like a place that hadn't been used in years.

I followed Daniel.

But my mind kept returning to Adrian.

The argument.

The rain.

The way he looked at me before he left.

At the time, I thought he didn't care.

Now I wondered if that was a lie too.

"Where is he?" I asked.

Nobody answered.

I stopped walking.

"Where is Adrian?"

Daniel turned.

"He is looking for you."

"Then why hasn't he found me?"

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

"Because someone made him believe you were gone."

I felt my chest tighten.

"What?"

Victor looked away.

"After you disappeared, Adrian received evidence that you were taken by someone connected to your own family."

"My family?"

I shook my head.

"That's impossible."

Daniel looked at me.

"Is it?"

I wanted to argue.

But I couldn't.

Because the truth was, I didn't know anymore.

Five years of marriage.

Five years of believing I knew every person around me.

And now every memory felt like it had another meaning.

We reached the end of the passage.

Victor opened another door.

It led into a small underground room.

Inside was a desk.

A computer.

And dozens of files.

Daniel walked toward the desk.

"This is what Adrian was protecting."

I looked around.

Pictures covered the wall.

Names.

Dates.

Locations.

And then I saw something that made my blood run cold.

My picture.

Not a recent picture.

An old one.

From before I met Adrian.

I stepped closer.

"When was this taken?"

Daniel didn't answer.

I picked up the file.

My hands started shaking.

Inside were documents.

Records.

Information about my childhood.

My education.

My movements.

Someone had been watching me.

For years.

"Who did this?"

Daniel walked closer.

"The same person who arranged your first meeting with Adrian."

I looked at him.

"What?"

Daniel pointed at another file.

"Your meeting wasn't accidental."

My stomach dropped.

I remembered that night.

A charity event.

A crowded room.

Adrian walking toward me.

The first time our eyes met.

I thought it was fate.

I thought it was chance.

But now...

Someone had planned it.

"Why?"

Daniel's voice became quieter.

"Because you were the only person who could get close enough to Adrian without him suspecting."

I stepped back.

"No."

Daniel looked at me.

"Isabella..."

"No."

I refused to accept it.

"My marriage was real."

Daniel didn't argue.

Instead, he said something that hurt even more.

"That doesn't mean someone didn't use the beginning of it for their own purpose."

I looked away.

Because deep inside, I knew Adrian loved me.

I knew it.

But love didn't erase secrets.

Love didn't erase lies.

A sound came from the computer.

Everyone turned.

The screen turned on by itself.

A video file appeared.

No name.

No date.

Only one word.

"ISABELLA."

Victor stepped back.

"I didn't open that."

Daniel stared at the screen.

"Neither did I."

The video started.

A younger Adrian appeared.

My breath stopped.

He was sitting in a dark room.

He looked exhausted.

Broken.

Nothing like the man everyone feared.

He looked directly into the camera.

And then he spoke.

"If Isabella is watching this..."

I covered my mouth.

Because hearing his voice after everything felt impossible.

Adrian continued.

"I'm sorry."

The video paused for a second.

Then continued.

"I tried to keep you away from this."

His eyes looked full of pain.

"But I failed."

A message appeared on the screen.

A timestamp.

Eight years earlier.

Before I ever met him.

Before our first conversation.

Before our marriage.

My hands went cold.

Adrian continued.

"The person who brought Isabella into my life..."

The screen flickered.

The image distorted.

Then his voice returned.

"...is the same person who destroyed my family."

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then the video showed one final image.

A photograph.

A person standing beside Adrian's father.

Someone I recognized.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had been part of my life since the beginning.

Daniel looked at the screen.

His face turned pale.

"No..."

I stared at the photograph.

Because the person standing next to Adrian's father was not a stranger.

It was someone who had smiled at me.

Someone who had hugged me.

Someone who had called me family.

The computer suddenly shut down.

My phone vibrated.

One new message.

From Adrian.

I opened it.

Only five words.

"Run. She knows you found out."

I looked at Daniel.

"Who is she?"

Nobody answered.

May you like

Then the underground door behind us slowly opened.

And a familiar voice whispered my name.
