Chapter 1 - The Girl Who Walked Through My Locked Door

A little girl stood barefoot in my living room holding a broken family photograph, whispering: "Your brother told me you would come back for him."

When I arrived at my estate after eight days of searching, I found my missing nephews standing beside her. But the back of the photograph had three words written on it: "Find Marcus Vale."

I suddenly realized this was never a missing children case.

I had spent twenty years finding people who did not want to be found.

That was what people in Chicago knew about me.

They knew my name because desperate families called me when police reports went cold.

They knew my reputation because I had tracked missing businessmen, runaway teenagers, and people who vanished under impossible circumstances.

I built my career around one belief.

Everyone leaves a trail.

Everyone makes a mistake.

Everyone can be found.

Except my brother.

Marcus Vale disappeared fifteen years ago.

And I was the one who buried him.

The world believed Marcus was dead.

I believed it too.

Until a little girl walked into my house and said his name.

Eight days earlier, my sister Emily had called me on a Friday afternoon.

"Can you watch the boys this weekend?" she asked.

Her voice sounded tired.

I knew she was overwhelmed.

Her husband had been traveling constantly, and her two sons, Noah and Liam, had been struggling with the changes in their family.

"Of course," I told her.

She laughed softly.

"They love being at your place. They think your security room is like a superhero headquarters."

I smiled.

My estate was built like a fortress.

Not because I was afraid.

Because my job had taught me that danger rarely announced itself.

The property had cameras covering every entrance.

Motion sensors around the entire perimeter.

Electronic locks.

Backup generators.

A security team that monitored everything.

Nothing entered.

Nothing left.

Not without me knowing.

That was why what happened next was impossible.

Friday evening, Noah and Liam arrived with backpacks full of toys.

They ran through the house like they owned it.

Noah jumped onto the couch.

"Uncle Daniel, can we see the security room?"

I smiled.

"After dinner."

Liam looked at the cameras on the walls.

"Can anyone break into this place?"

I shook my head.

"No one."

I believed those words.

That was my first mistake.

The weekend was supposed to be simple.

Movies.

Pizza.

Games.

A normal family weekend.

Something I rarely had time for.

Saturday morning, I woke up early.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

I walked toward the boys' room.

The door was open.

The beds were empty.

At first, I thought they were hiding.

"Noah?"

No answer.

"Liam?"

Nothing.

I checked the bathroom.

The kitchen.

The backyard.

Nothing.

Then I felt something cold move through my chest.

I ran to the security room.

Every camera feed was working.

Every alarm was active.

Every door showed locked.

I replayed the footage.

6:13 a.m.

The boys' bedroom.

Empty.

6:14 a.m.

Still empty.

6:15 a.m.

Still empty.

There was no moment where they left.

No stranger entered.

No window opened.

No alarm sounded.

They simply disappeared.

I stared at the screen.

For the first time in my career...

I had no answer.

I called Emily.

She arrived twenty minutes later.

The second she saw my face, she knew.

"Where are they?"

I couldn't answer.

Her eyes filled with fear.

"My boys?"

I looked at the security monitor.

"I don't know."

Those were the hardest words I had ever spoken.

Police arrived.

Investigators searched the estate.

They found nothing.

No footprints.

No broken locks.

No evidence.

The officers looked at me differently.

Because everyone knew my reputation.

Everyone knew I was the person who found missing people.

But now two children disappeared from my own house.

And I could not find them.

The next eight days became the longest days of my life.

I searched every street.

Every camera.

Every possible route.

I questioned neighbors.

Employees.

Security staff.

Everyone.

Nothing.

Until the eighth night.

At exactly 11:47 p.m.

My front door camera activated.

I froze.

Someone was standing outside.

I opened the monitor.

And forgot how to breathe.

Noah and Liam were standing on my front steps.

Alive.

Beside them was a little girl I had never seen before.

She was holding a worn stuffed rabbit.

I ran to the door.

The boys rushed into my arms.

"Uncle Daniel!"

I held them tightly.

I checked their faces.

Their hands.

Their eyes.

They were real.

They were alive.

Then I looked at the girl.

She did not move.

She only stared at me.

Like she had been waiting years for this moment.

"Who are you?" I asked.

She slowly lifted the broken photograph in her hand.

My blood turned cold.

It was an old picture of me and Marcus.

My brother.

The brother I buried fifteen years ago.

The girl looked directly into my eyes.

"Your brother said you would not believe me."

I stepped back.

"What did you say?"

She touched the photograph.

"Marcus told me you would think he was dead."

My hands went numb.

Emily arrived behind me.

The second she saw the picture, her face changed.

She knew.

She knew something.

I looked at my sister.

"What is this?"

She opened her mouth.

But no words came out.

The little girl walked closer.

She turned the photograph around.

On the back were handwritten words.

Three simple words.

Find Marcus Vale.

My heart stopped.

Because only one person had that handwriting.

Marcus.

My dead brother.

I looked at the little girl.

"Where did you get this?"

She lowered her voice.

"He told me to bring it to you."

I felt the entire world shift.

Because Marcus was gone.

Marcus was buried.

Marcus was supposed to be a memory.

But someone had just sent me a message from the past.

I looked at the security cameras.

The front gate.

The locked doors.

The impossible return of my nephews.

And then the little girl whispered something that made my entire body freeze.

"Your brother never died."

The lights in my estate suddenly went out.

May you like

And from somewhere inside the house...

a phone began ringing.
