Chapter 1 - The Laptop That Changed My Wedding Day

A bride grabbed a laptop during her wedding reception and whispered: "Why is my name on this file?"
When billionaire groom Adrian Cole arrived, he discovered a damaged laptop hidden beneath the wedding gifts.
But one sentence was written on a small note attached to it: "Ask your mother what happened before you were born."
Adrian suddenly realized this wasn't a wedding surprise.
I still remembered the exact moment when my perfect wedding stopped feeling like a celebration.
For months, I had imagined that day differently.
I imagined walking down the aisle without fear.
I imagined looking into Adrian's eyes and knowing I had finally found the person who would stand beside me for the rest of my life.
I imagined the sound of laughter, the warmth of my family's smiles, and the feeling of closing one chapter of my life and opening another.
But I never imagined that the biggest secret of my life would be waiting for me at the same table where I was supposed to celebrate my future.
My name was Evelyn Carter.
I was twenty-eight years old when I married Adrian Cole, a man everyone described as successful, intelligent, and impossible to break.
People saw him as the kind of man who always had control.
He built his company from nothing.
He made decisions quickly.
He never showed fear.
But on that afternoon, I learned that even the strongest person in the room could be hiding something.
The reception had been beautiful.
The garden was covered with white flowers.
The tables were decorated with crystal glasses and candles.
A huge wedding cake stood behind us, surrounded by roses.
Everyone looked happy.
Everyone looked like they belonged there.
My mother, Linda Carter, sat beside me wearing an elegant dark green velvet dress.
She had been the person who raised me.
The person who held my hand when I was sick.
The person who told me I deserved happiness.
At least, that was what I believed.
Across from me, Adrian was talking with some guests.
He smiled.
He shook hands.
He looked like the happiest man alive.
Then a waiter placed a small black laptop on the table in front of me.
I frowned.
"I didn't order this," I said.
The waiter looked nervous.
He didn't meet my eyes.
"Someone asked me to give it to you before the speeches begin."
"Who?"
He hesitated.
Then he looked toward the crowd.
"I was told not to say."
That answer immediately made my stomach tighten.
At first, I thought it was some kind of wedding surprise.
Maybe Adrian had prepared a video.
Maybe my friends had created something emotional.
I almost laughed at myself for being suspicious.
Then I noticed something.
The laptop wasn't new.
There was a deep scratch across the surface.
One corner was cracked.
It looked like someone had tried to hide it.
My fingers touched the edge slowly.
Something about it felt wrong.
"Are you okay?"
My mother's voice came from beside me.
I looked at her.
For a second, I thought I saw panic in her eyes.
Not confusion.
Not curiosity.
Fear.
"Do you know anything about this?" I asked.
She immediately looked away.
"No. Of course not."
But her answer came too quickly.
Before I could ask again, the guests began gathering around us.
The music lowered.
People started preparing for the speeches.
Adrian returned to the table with a smile.
"Everything okay?"
I looked at him.
Then I looked at the laptop.
"I don't know."
His smile faded slightly.
That was the first time I saw uncertainty on his face.
I opened the laptop.
The screen turned on immediately.
There was no password.
No welcome page.
Only one folder.
My name was written on it.
"EVELYN CARTER."
My heart stopped for a second.
I clicked the folder.
Inside were dozens of files.
Photos.
Documents.
Videos.
Some of them were dated years before I even met Adrian.
My hands became cold.
"What is this?"
Nobody answered.
The people around me suddenly became quiet.
I clicked the first video.
The screen showed a dark room.
A woman was sitting in front of the camera.
I couldn't see her face clearly.
But I recognized her voice.
It was my mother's voice.
My breathing changed.
The video played.
"Evelyn, if you are watching this, it means they failed to stop you from finding the truth."
I froze.
My mother stood up immediately.
"Turn it off."
Her voice was louder than I had ever heard.
Everyone looked at her.
Adrian stared at me.
"What is going on?"
I didn't answer.
I couldn't.
Because my mother had never spoken to me like that.
The woman in the video continued.
"I spent years trying to protect you from what happened that night."
My fingers tightened around the laptop.
"What night?" I whispered.
My mother stepped closer.
"Evelyn, please."
Please.
That word scared me more than anger.
Because my mother was not asking me to stop.
She was begging me.
I looked back at the screen.
The video showed a younger version of my mother placing a document on a table.
Then she said something that made the entire wedding reception fall silent.
"Your entire life was built on a lie."
Someone behind me gasped.
A glass fell and shattered.
Adrian looked at my mother.
"What did you do?"
She didn't answer.
The video continued.
The woman on the screen slowly opened the document.
A name appeared.
Not mine.
Not Adrian's.
Someone else's.
A name I had never heard before.
But everyone around me reacted as if they knew exactly who it belonged to.
I looked at my mother.
Her face had lost all color.
"Who is that?" I asked.
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then Adrian grabbed the laptop and looked closer.
His expression changed.
Because he recognized the name.
"Impossible..."
I turned toward him.
"What?"
He looked at me.
And for the first time since I met him, Adrian looked afraid.
"Evelyn..."
His voice became quiet.
"That person is connected to my family."
The crowd started whispering.
The beautiful wedding decorations around me suddenly felt like they belonged to someone else's life.
The woman I trusted most had hidden something.
The man I was about to marry knew more than he admitted.
And the laptop in front of me was proving that my wedding day was never supposed to be just a wedding.
It was a confession.
I closed the video and opened another file.
The file name was simple.
"THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED."
I clicked it.
The screen went black.
Then a message appeared.
PLAYING LAST RECORDED MESSAGE.
A few seconds passed.
Then a voice whispered my name.
"Evelyn..."
I stopped breathing.
May you like
Because the voice belonged to someone who was supposed to be gone forever.
And then the laptop screen showed the face of the person who had been watching my life from the shadows...
