Chapter 9 - The Sister Nobody Knew Existed

The message stayed on the screen.
Come home. Your sister is waiting.
I read it again.
And again.
But the words refused to make sense.
A sister.
I didn't have a sister.
At least...
I didn't think I did.
My entire life had been built around one truth.
I was an only child.
A girl who lost her mother.
A girl who never knew her father.
A girl who grew up learning not to ask too many questions.
But now every answer I found created another mystery.
I looked at Daniel.
"Explain."
My voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
Daniel looked at the phone.
Then at Elena.
My mother looked away.
That was when I knew.
She knew.
"Mom."
The word came out differently this time.
Not with love.
Not with relief.
With pain.
"Tell me."
Elena closed her eyes.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"I wanted to."
I shook my head.
"No."
I stepped back.
"Don't say that."
She looked at me.
"I did."
"Then why didn't you?"
The question broke something inside her.
"Because every person who knew about her died."
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
"Who?"
Elena looked at Daniel.
Then Adrian.
Then back at me.
"Your sister."
My heart stopped.
"What happened to her?"
Daniel answered.
"She disappeared the same night you did."
The words hit me.
"The same night?"
He nodded.
"The fire wasn't meant to kill you."
I felt cold.
"It was meant to erase both of you."
I looked at the photo on the phone.
The girl standing in my old bedroom.
The girl who looked like me.
"How old was she?"
Elena's voice trembled.
"Six."
I swallowed.
"Her name?"
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel whispered:
"Isabella."
The name felt strange.
But somehow familiar.
Like a song I had forgotten.
I turned to Adrian.
"Did you know?"
He didn't answer.
And that was enough.
My chest tightened.
"You knew."
Adrian looked at me.
"I knew there was another child."
I stared at him.
"Another child?"
His expression changed.
"I didn't know she survived."
I laughed softly.
"Of course."
I wiped my tears.
"Another secret."
Adrian stepped closer.
"Mara."
"No."
I held up my hand.
"Don't."
For once, he stopped.
The powerful man everyone feared stopped because I asked him to.
But it didn't make me feel better.
It made me realize how much had been hidden from me.
Daniel walked toward the monitor.
The image of my childhood bedroom was still frozen.
The girl in the photo was still standing beside my old bed.
Waiting.
"She is alive."
Daniel said it quietly.
Everyone looked at him.
"You know that?"
Elena asked.
Daniel nodded.
"I suspected."
My mother looked shocked.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I wasn't sure."
"Daniel."
His eyes softened.
"Elena, every time we searched for her, people disappeared."
The room became colder.
"Someone wanted Isabella forgotten."
I looked at the screen.
"Why?"
Nobody answered.
Then Adrian spoke.
"Because she knows something."
I turned.
"What?"
Adrian looked at Daniel.
Daniel didn't deny it.
"What does she know?"
Adrian's face became serious.
"The truth about the night your father disappeared."
I stared at him.
"My father disappeared?"
Daniel nodded.
"Your father wasn't killed."
I felt like I had heard those words before.
Everyone I loved had been alive somewhere.
Everyone had chosen silence.
Everyone had left me alone with a lie.
"So where was he?"
Nobody answered.
Then Elena walked toward me.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like I was something fragile.
"There was a reason I hid you."
I looked at her.
"Tell me."
She took a breath.
"Your father found evidence against the people who controlled the city."
"The people Adrian's father worked with."
I looked at Adrian.
His face was unreadable.
"He wanted to expose them."
Daniel continued.
"But before he could, they found out."
"Then what?"
Elena looked down.
"They came after our family."
I felt my fingers go numb.
"They didn't just want your father."
Her voice broke.
"They wanted his children."
Children.
Plural.
The word echoed.
I looked back at the photo.
Isabella.
My sister.
A person I never knew existed.
A person someone had spent twenty years hiding.
The old phone suddenly vibrated.
Everyone froze.
A new message.
I picked it up.
My hands shook.
The message was from the same unknown number.
She remembers everything.
A second message appeared.
Ask her about the basement.
I looked at Daniel.
"What basement?"
His face changed instantly.
Elena covered her mouth.
Adrian stepped forward.
"Where is she?"
Nobody answered.
I looked at my mother.
"Mom."
She looked terrified.
"Mara..."
"Where is the basement?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Under your childhood home."
A cold wave moved through me.
"The house."
Daniel nodded.
"The house where the fire happened."
I looked at the screen again.
The photo of my old bedroom.
The hidden message.
The sister I never knew.
Everything pointed back to that place.
My childhood home.
The place where my life changed forever.
Adrian grabbed his coat.
"We're going."
I looked at him.
"You can't tell me what to do."
His eyes met mine.
"I know."
A pause.
"But I'm going with you."
I wanted to argue.
But I couldn't.
Because somewhere inside me, I knew.
The answers were there.
The truth about my mother.
My father.
My sister.
Everything.
Waiting beneath the same roof where my old life ended.
An hour later, we arrived.
The house looked smaller than I remembered.
Almost like a dream.
The paint was gone.
The windows were broken.
The garden had disappeared.
But the front door was still there.
The same door I remembered hiding behind.
The same door my mother had closed before the fire.
Daniel stood beside me.
"Are you ready?"
No.
I wasn't.
But I opened the door anyway.
Inside, everything was covered in dust.
Except one thing.
Footprints.
Fresh ones.
Someone had been here recently.
Adrian immediately raised his hand.
Everyone stopped.
He looked down.
At the floor.
Then toward the hallway.
Someone was inside.
We moved slowly.
Room by room.
Until we reached my old bedroom.
The door was slightly open.
My heart started racing.
Because I knew.
Someone was waiting.
Adrian reached for the handle.
But before he touched it...
The door opened from the inside.
And a girl stood there.
Older now.
Terrified.
Holding the same necklace I had been wearing.
She looked at me.
May you like
And whispered:
"Mara..."
