Chapter 8 - The Father Behind The Door

The man standing in the doorway said my name.
"Mara."
I couldn't move.
The voice was different from the one on the phone.
Older.
Closer.
Real.
Adrian immediately stepped in front of me.
His hand moved toward his weapon.
But the man didn't react.
He just stood there.
Looking at me.
Like he had been waiting for this moment for years.
The hallway lights flickered above us.
And for a second, I saw his face clearly.
I saw the photograph.
The same eyes.
The same expression.
The same man who had been standing behind my mother twenty years ago.
My father.
The word felt impossible.
Because my entire life, I had been told there was no father to remember.
No name.
No history.
No story.
Just a blank space.
A person who had never existed.
But now that person was standing in front of me.
Alive.
"You're not real."
The words left my mouth before I could stop them.
The man looked hurt.
Not angry.
Not offended.
Hurt.
"I know why you think that."
I shook my head.
"No."
My voice became louder.
"I don't think that."
I pointed at him.
"I know that."
Nobody spoke.
My mother stood behind me, crying silently.
Adrian watched the man carefully.
Like he was facing someone more dangerous than an enemy.
"Your name."
Adrian's voice was cold.
The man looked at him.
"Daniel."
The room changed.
Adrian froze.
Lucian lowered his eyes.
Even Victor looked away.
I noticed.
Because whatever that name meant...
Everyone knew it.
Everyone except me.
"Daniel what?"
I asked.
The man looked at me.
"Daniel Cross."
The name meant nothing.
But Adrian reacted.
And that was enough.
I turned to him.
"You know him."
Adrian didn't answer.
"Adrian."
His jaw tightened.
"I know who he is."
"Then tell me."
Silence.
Again.
Always silence.
I stepped away from him.
"You all do this."
Nobody moved.
"You all decide what I can handle."
My eyes filled with tears.
"You all protect me with lies."
Daniel looked at Adrian.
"She's right."
Adrian's expression darkened.
"Don't."
Daniel ignored him.
"You promised Elena you would tell her everything when the time came."
Elena closed her eyes.
"I thought we had more time."
Daniel looked at her sadly.
"We never had more time."
Those words scared me.
Because everyone was acting like we were already running out of something.
I looked at Daniel.
"Why did you leave?"
The question came out quietly.
The room became still.
Daniel looked at me.
And I saw something I didn't expect.
Pain.
"I didn't leave you."
My throat tightened.
"Then why wasn't I with you?"
He looked down.
"Because if I stayed, you would have died."
I laughed.
A broken sound.
"Everyone says they did things for me."
I wiped my tears.
"Everyone says they were saving me."
I looked directly at him.
"But nobody was there."
Daniel took a slow breath.
"I was there."
"No."
My voice cracked.
"You weren't."
The words hurt him.
I saw it.
But I needed him to understand.
"I was eight years old."
I stepped closer.
"I woke up one night and my mother was gone."
"My house was burning."
"Everyone I loved disappeared."
My voice shook.
"And now you walk in and tell me you were protecting me?"
Daniel said nothing.
Because there was nothing he could say.
Then he reached into his coat.
Adrian immediately moved.
But Daniel pulled out something small.
A necklace.
My necklace.
The same pendant from the box.
Only this one was older.
Worn.
Broken.
"I gave this to your mother before you were born."
My eyes moved to it.
"Why?"
Daniel looked at me.
"Because it contained the only thing that could prove who you were."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel looked at Adrian.
"Tell her."
Adrian stayed silent.
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Tell her what your father did."
The atmosphere changed.
Adrian looked away.
And I understood.
This wasn't just about my mother.
It wasn't just about my father.
It was about Adrian too.
"What did his father do?"
Nobody answered.
Daniel walked toward the table.
He picked up the old photograph.
"The Voss family built an empire."
He looked at me.
"Everyone knows that."
"But nobody knows how."
I listened.
Because every answer opened another door.
"Your father discovered something."
"What?"
"A network."
Daniel placed the photograph down.
"Politicians."
"Business leaders."
"People who controlled entire cities."
I felt cold.
"And your father?"
Daniel looked at me.
"He wanted to expose them."
I looked at Adrian.
"And your family stopped him?"
Adrian finally spoke.
"My father did."
The honesty shocked me.
He continued.
"My father believed power was more important than truth."
Daniel nodded.
"Your father tried to destroy everything they built."
"And?"
Daniel looked at Elena.
"Elena found out."
My mother lowered her eyes.
"She was going to help him."
"And that's why they came after us."
The words felt like a knife.
I looked at Daniel.
"Who came after you?"
He didn't answer.
Instead, he walked to the security monitor.
The screen still showed my childhood bedroom.
The hidden message remained.
YOUR FATHER IS HERE.
Daniel looked at it.
Then at me.
"They found you because they knew this moment would happen."
My heart raced.
"Who?"
Daniel didn't answer.
A sound interrupted us.
A notification.
From the old phone.
Everyone turned.
The screen lit up.
A new message.
I walked closer.
Adrian tried to stop me.
But I needed to see.
The message appeared.
One sentence.
YOU BROUGHT HER BACK TO THE HOUSE WHERE SHE WAS BORN.
My breathing stopped.
House.
Again.
Not building.
Not safe room.
House.
Daniel's face changed.
"No."
Elena looked terrified.
"What?"
Daniel grabbed the phone.
His hands were shaking.
For the first time, the man who had survived twenty years of hiding looked completely afraid.
"What's wrong?"
Daniel looked at me.
Then at Adrian.
"The house..."
His voice became quiet.
"The house wasn't abandoned."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"What are you saying?"
Daniel looked toward the entrance.
"Someone has been living there."
Nobody moved.
Then the phone received another message.
This time, it contained a picture.
I looked at the screen.
And my entire body went numb.
It was a photo of my childhood bedroom.
Taken moments ago.
The same room from the camera feed.
But this time...
Someone was standing beside my old bed.
Someone holding a picture frame.
Someone facing the camera.
Someone who looked exactly like me.
Adrian whispered:
"Mara..."
I couldn't look away.
May you like
Because beneath the photo was a single line.
Come home. Your sister is waiting.
