Chapter 11 - The Truth Behind The Enemy

The recording continued.
Static filled the basement.
Then my father's voice returned.
"The enemy is the person standing beside him."
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Everyone looked at Adrian.
Including me.
For one second, I hated him.
Because my entire life had been a collection of people telling me what they thought would protect me.
And every time...
The truth became worse.
Adrian stood completely still.
His face showed nothing.
But his eyes changed.
I saw it.
A small crack in the control he always carried.
"Mara."
I stepped back.
"Don't."
The word came out before he could say anything else.
The recording continued.
"My daughter..."
My father's voice broke slightly.
"If you are hearing this, I failed."
My hands tightened.
I didn't know this man.
I never met him.
But hearing his voice felt like losing someone I had already lost.
"I tried to keep you away from this world."
A pause.
"But your blood was always connected to it."
The old machine clicked.
Then another voice appeared.
Not my father's.
A woman's.
My mother's.
"If something happens to us, remember one thing."
The recording continued.
"Trust the person who chooses your life over their power."
Everyone looked confused.
Then my mother's voice said:
"And that person is Adrian."
The basement went silent.
I looked at Adrian.
He didn't move.
My father continued.
"The Voss family is divided."
"The son who inherited the empire."
"And the son who wanted to destroy it."
My eyes moved to Lucian.
He stood near the stairs.
Silent.
The recording continued.
"Lucian was never the enemy."
Lucian closed his eyes.
Like he had been waiting years to hear those words.
"The enemy is the one who controls both sides."
The machine made a cracking sound.
Then my father's final sentence played.
"The person who caused the fire was not chasing us."
A pause.
"They were protecting their secret."
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Adrian.
"Explain."
He looked at me.
And for the first time...
He looked tired.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just tired.
"My father."
The words came slowly.
"He wasn't the person who started the fire."
I frowned.
"Then who?"
Adrian looked toward the stairs.
Toward the people above us.
"I don't know."
Lucian laughed quietly.
Everyone turned.
"You do."
Adrian looked at him.
Lucian stepped closer.
"You've always known."
"Stop."
"No."
Lucian's voice hardened.
"Not anymore."
He looked at me.
"Your father discovered the truth."
I listened.
"The Voss empire wasn't controlled by my father."
He looked at Adrian.
"It was controlled by someone else."
"Who?"
Lucian's expression changed.
"The person who raised us."
A chill moved through me.
"Your mother?"
"No."
The answer came instantly.
"Our uncle."
The basement became colder.
Adrian looked away.
"My father's brother."
Lucian nodded.
"The real architect."
I shook my head.
"Then why did everyone think it was your father?"
"Because he allowed them to."
Lucian's voice was bitter.
"He took the blame because he thought he could control the damage."
"And he couldn't."
"No."
Lucian looked at the recording device.
"He couldn't."
A sound came from above.
A heavy impact.
Everyone froze.
The people outside had entered the house.
Adrian immediately moved.
"We leave now."
But Daniel stopped him.
"No."
Adrian looked at him.
Daniel pointed toward the recording.
"There's more."
I looked at the machine.
"What?"
Daniel walked toward it.
"Your father never left one message."
He pressed a hidden button underneath.
The machine turned back on.
A different recording started.
This time...
My father's voice sounded different.
More urgent.
"If you found this, it means the first message was not enough."
I swallowed.
"Mara."
Hearing my name from him hurt.
"I need you to know the truth about the key."
I touched my necklace.
The pendant felt heavier.
"The key was never power."
The recording continued.
"It was proof."
"Proof of what?"
Nobody answered.
Because the recording did.
"Proof that the person who controls this empire is not a Voss."
My heart stopped.
Adrian looked confused.
Lucian stepped closer.
"What?"
My father's voice continued.
"The true heir was hidden."
A pause.
"Because she was a child."
My breathing slowed.
A child.
A hidden heir.
I looked at Isabella.
Then myself.
The recording continued.
"The world believes there is only one daughter."
My blood went cold.
"But there are two."
Isabella grabbed my hand.
The room went silent.
My father's voice became softer.
"Mara and Isabella."
I looked at my sister.
For the first time, she didn't look afraid.
She looked angry.
Because she had carried this secret alone.
For twenty years.
"The key must never fall into the hands of the person who destroyed our family."
The machine clicked.
Then my father's final words played.
"If that person finds Mara..."
The basement lights flickered.
Everyone looked up.
The sound of footsteps came from above.
Slow.
Calm.
Not the footsteps of someone searching.
The footsteps of someone who already knew where we were.
My father's voice continued.
"She will not come alone."
A pause.
Then:
"She will bring my sister."
I froze.
My sister?
Not Isabella.
Someone else.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Elena whispered:
"No."
I turned.
Her face had lost all color.
"What?"
She looked toward the stairs.
"That wasn't possible."
Daniel grabbed his weapon.
"Elena."
She shook her head.
"She died."
Adrian stared at her.
"Who died?"
My mother's eyes filled with fear.
"The woman who started all of this."
A sound came from above.
A woman's voice.
Clear.
Close.
"Elena."
Everyone froze.
Because the voice was familiar.
My mother stepped backward.
"No."
The footsteps stopped.
Right above us.
Then the woman spoke again.
"You really thought you could hide my daughter forever?"
My blood turned cold.
Adrian looked at me.
Lucian reached for his weapon.
Daniel moved in front of Isabella.
And Elena whispered the name she had spent twenty years trying to forget.
"Clara..."
May you like
The basement door slowly opened.
And standing at the top of the stairs was the one person nobody expected to see alive.
