Chapter 10 - The Girl Who Lived In The Shadows

The girl stood in front of me.
She looked like me.
Not exactly.
But enough to make my entire body forget how to breathe.
Same eyes.
Same dark hair.
Same small scar near the eyebrow.
A scar I had never noticed on anyone else.
Because it was mine.
A mirror.
A person.
A missing piece of my life standing only a few feet away.
"Mara."
She said my name again.
Her voice shook.
Like she was afraid I would disappear.
I couldn't move.
I couldn't speak.
Then Elena made a sound behind me.
A broken sound.
"Isabella."
The girl's eyes filled with tears.
And suddenly, I knew.
Not because someone explained.
Not because someone told me.
Because my heart already knew.
My sister.
The little girl everyone lost.
The girl who disappeared the same night I did.
She was alive.
Isabella looked at my mother.
But she didn't run to her.
She didn't hug her.
She stood there.
Like she didn't know if she was allowed.
And somehow that hurt more than anything.
Twenty years apart.
Twenty years of fear.
Twenty years of believing everyone was gone.
"Why?"
The word came out of my mouth.
Isabella looked at me.
"Why what?"
"Why didn't you find me?"
Her expression broke.
"I tried."
The answer was immediate.
"I tried for years."
I shook my head.
"Then why didn't I know you existed?"
She looked away.
Because she had an answer.
A painful one.
"Because they made sure we never found each other."
The room became silent.
Adrian stepped forward.
"Who?"
Isabella looked at him.
And the fear returned.
Not of him.
Of what his name represented.
"The people your father was fighting."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"What do you know about them?"
Isabella stared at him.
"I know they killed everyone who tried to expose them."
Daniel moved closer.
"Isabella."
She looked at him.
"You shouldn't be here."
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Her eyes moved toward the hallway.
"They know."
A cold feeling went through me.
"Who knows?"
Nobody answered.
Then the lights in the house flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Isabella immediately grabbed my hand.
The touch shocked me.
Because it felt familiar.
Like holding the hand of someone I had known my entire life.
"Where is the basement?"
I asked.
Everyone looked at me.
Isabella tightened her grip.
"You shouldn't open it."
"Why?"
She looked at me.
"Because that's where they kept the truth."
My heart raced.
The basement.
The message.
Everything came back.
Ask her about the basement.
"What happened down there?"
Isabella looked toward the floor.
Her face changed.
Like she wasn't seeing the house anymore.
She was seeing the past.
"The night of the fire..."
She stopped.
I waited.
"My father took us there."
Daniel looked shocked.
"He took you?"
Isabella nodded.
"He knew they were coming."
My breathing slowed.
"What happened next?"
She looked at me.
"He told us one of us had to leave."
The words made no sense.
"One of us?"
She nodded.
"He said they would only stop hunting one child."
I felt cold.
"What does that mean?"
Isabella looked at me.
"They wanted the heir."
Nobody spoke.
The word hung in the air.
Heir.
Again.
Always that word.
A hidden legacy.
A secret inheritance.
Something connected to my father.
"But why?"
I asked.
"Why would they care about children?"
Isabella looked at Adrian.
Then at me.
"Because your father didn't just leave evidence."
She swallowed.
"He left control."
Adrian's expression changed.
"What did he leave?"
Isabella didn't answer.
Instead, she walked toward the old bedroom.
She opened a drawer.
Inside was a small wooden box.
My heart stopped.
Because I recognized it.
It was the same kind of box my mother had hidden.
She brought it to me.
"I kept this because I knew one day you would come back."
My fingers touched the surface.
There was a symbol carved into the wood.
The same symbol.
The one connected to my mother.
To my father.
To everything.
I opened it.
Inside was a stack of papers.
And one photograph.
I picked it up.
The picture showed my parents.
Adrian's father.
Lucian.
Elena.
And another person.
A woman.
Young.
Holding two babies.
Me.
And Isabella.
But that wasn't what shocked me.
It was the writing behind the photograph.
A sentence.
Written by my father.
Only one daughter can carry the key.
I looked up.
"What key?"
Nobody answered.
Then Isabella whispered:
"Mara..."
I turned.
She looked terrified.
"The key isn't an object."
My heart slowed.
"What is it?"
She looked at me.
"It's you."
The room went silent.
I stepped back.
"No."
Isabella nodded.
"The people hunting us aren't looking for something you have."
She looked at my necklace.
"They're looking for something you are."
My hand moved to the pendant.
The one my father had given my mother.
The one connected to my identity.
I looked at Adrian.
"Did you know?"
He didn't answer.
Again.
The silence.
The betrayal.
I felt something inside me break.
"How much have you hidden from me?"
Adrian looked at me.
"I was trying to keep you alive."
"And what happens now?"
Nobody answered.
Because everyone heard it.
A car stopping outside.
Then another.
Then another.
Daniel moved toward the window.
His face changed.
"We have to go."
Adrian checked the outside.
Too late.
The house was surrounded.
Black vehicles.
Men moving through the darkness.
Not police.
Not ordinary people.
People who knew exactly where we were.
Isabella grabbed my arm.
"There is another way out."
"Where?"
She looked toward the floor.
"The basement."
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked at her.
"No."
She looked back.
"It's the only way."
Adrian stepped forward.
"Mara, don't."
But the front door shook.
Someone was trying to break in.
The house was no longer hiding us.
It was trapping us.
Isabella opened the hidden panel beneath the old carpet.
A staircase appeared.
Dark.
Cold.
Waiting.
My entire childhood had been built around this house.
And now the answers were beneath it.
I stepped down.
One step.
Then another.
Adrian followed.
Behind us, the front door exploded open.
Someone entered the house.
Someone who had been waiting twenty years for this moment.
We reached the bottom of the stairs.
A single room waited below.
Inside was a table.
A chair.
And an old recording device.
Isabella stopped.
Her face turned pale.
Because she recognized it.
"It's still here."
I looked at her.
"What?"
She whispered:
"The message my father left before they took him."
The device suddenly turned on by itself.
Static filled the room.
Then a man's voice echoed through the basement.
My father's voice.
"Mara..."
I froze.
The recording continued.
"If you are hearing this, it means they found you."
Everyone listened.
Then my father's voice said the words that made Adrian step back.
"Adrian Voss was never the enemy."
A pause.
A terrible pause.
May you like
Then:
"The enemy is the person standing beside him..."
