Chapter 7 - The Father Who Never Died

The building went silent.

Not the peaceful kind of silence.

The kind that came before something broke.

I stood behind Adrian as the stranger entered the lobby.

Every instinct told me to run.

But my body refused to move.

Because I knew that face.

Not from memory.

From the photograph.

The photograph my mother had hidden for twenty years.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

The man who somehow knew my name.

The guards surrounded him before he reached the elevator.

Weapons raised.

But the stranger didn't look afraid.

He looked tired.

Like he had been waiting a long time for this moment.

Adrian stepped forward.

"Victor."

The man's eyes moved to him.

A small smile appeared.

"Hello, Adrian."

My heart stopped.

Victor.

That name.

The way Adrian said it.

Like it carried years of anger.

Years of betrayal.

Years of pain.

"You're dead."

Adrian's voice was cold.

Victor looked around the room.

"Apparently, everyone has been telling that story."

My mother appeared beside me.

The moment Victor saw her, his expression changed.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Something worse.

Regret.

"Elena."

My mother's face turned pale.

She grabbed my arm.

"Stay behind me."

I looked at her.

For twenty years, I imagined my mother.

I imagined what she would say if she ever came back.

I imagined holding her.

I imagined crying.

But now that she was here...

I didn't know how to feel.

Because every person around me had lied.

Everyone had a version of the truth.

And somehow, I was always the last person to hear it.

Victor looked at me.

His eyes softened.

"Mara."

I stepped back.

"Don't."

He stopped.

Good.

At least one person listened.

"You don't get to say my name."

His expression changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

"I know."

"No, you don't."

My voice shook.

"You don't know what it was like."

The room became quiet.

"You don't know what it was like growing up without answers."

I looked at Elena.

"Without my mother."

Then Adrian.

"Without knowing who I could trust."

Victor lowered his eyes.

"I know more than you think."

I laughed quietly.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

I looked around.

"And nobody tells me anything."

Adrian stepped between us.

"Why are you here?"

Victor looked at him.

"Because she called."

My blood froze.

I looked at Elena.

"What?"

Victor's eyes moved toward my mother.

"She sent the signal."

My mother shook her head.

"No."

Victor frowned.

"You didn't?"

"No."

The air changed.

Adrian immediately noticed.

"Then who activated the phone?"

Nobody answered.

Because everyone already knew.

Someone else had been watching.

Someone else had been waiting.

Victor looked toward the security cameras.

"You're not alone."

Adrian's men immediately checked the monitors.

One of them turned pale.

"Boss."

Adrian looked over.

"What?"

The guard swallowed.

"There are no camera feeds."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"What do you mean?"

"They're still connected."

The guard looked at the screen.

"But someone replaced every image with a loop."

A chill went through me.

Someone had entered the safest place Adrian had.

Someone had controlled his security.

Someone had been inside before we noticed.

Victor looked at Adrian.

"You're still making the same mistake."

Adrian stared at him.

"What mistake?"

"Thinking the enemy is outside."

Nobody spoke.

Then the lights went out.

Again.

This time, nobody moved.

Because everyone knew.

This wasn't an accident.

A backup generator started.

But the hallway lights didn't return.

Only one screen remained on.

The security monitor.

A single camera feed appeared.

The hidden room.

The room where my mother had been kept safe.

My breath stopped.

Because the camera showed someone standing inside.

A person wearing a dark coat.

Standing beside the old wooden box.

The box that contained my mother's secrets.

The box that nobody had touched since we opened it.

Adrian immediately moved.

"How did they get in there?"

No one answered.

Victor looked at the screen.

His face changed.

"You need to leave."

Adrian looked at him.

"Who is that?"

Victor didn't respond.

That scared me.

Because this was the first time Victor looked afraid.

The person on the screen slowly turned.

The camera quality was poor.

The face was hidden in shadows.

But then the person reached down.

Picked up the old phone.

And held it toward the camera.

The same phone that had called me.

The same phone that should have been impossible.

A message appeared on the screen.

Everyone saw it.

I told you I would find her.

My mother grabbed my hand.

"No."

I looked at her.

"Who is it?"

She didn't answer.

The person in the camera feed moved closer.

The screen flickered.

Then a second message appeared.

You should have never brought Mara back to this house.

Adrian's face changed.

House.

Not building.

Not safe house.

House.

A place connected to the past.

A place I didn't know.

Victor looked at Elena.

"You didn't tell her."

My mother closed her eyes.

"I was trying to protect her."

"From what?"

Victor looked at me.

"From the truth."

The camera feed suddenly changed.

Now it showed a different room.

A room I recognized.

My childhood bedroom.

I stopped breathing.

The walls were different.

The furniture was older.

But it was my room.

The room where I slept before my mother disappeared.

The camera moved slowly.

Showing every corner.

Then stopped on the wall above my old bed.

There was writing there.

Hidden beneath layers of paint.

Four words.

Words I had never seen.

But somehow...

I knew they were meant for me.

Adrian noticed my expression.

"Mara."

I couldn't look away.

The camera zoomed in.

The words became clear.

YOUR FATHER IS HERE.

My hands went cold.

Because behind the camera...

Someone whispered my name.

Not through the phone.

Not through the speakers.

From somewhere inside the building.

A real voice.

A voice standing only a few feet away.

Adrian turned sharply toward the hallway.

Everyone reached for their weapons.

Then the locked door behind us slowly opened.

May you like

And the person standing there said:

"Mara, I have been waiting for you..."
