Chapter 6 - The Man Behind the Lies

The man standing in the doorway smiled.

Not the smile of an enemy.

Not the smile of someone who had been caught.

A familiar smile.

The kind of smile that made Luca Moretti trust him for most of his life.

"Uncle Adrian."

The name left Luca’s mouth like an accusation.

Adrian Moretti stepped into the hidden room slowly.

He looked older than Luca remembered.

But his eyes were the same.

Cold.

Calculating.

Patient.

The man behind every decision.

The man who had always told Luca he was protecting the family.

Sofia held Elena’s hand tightly.

She didn’t know why everyone looked afraid.

She only knew that the room had changed.

Luca stepped in front of Elena and Sofia.

A protective instinct he didn’t even think about.

Adrian noticed.

And smiled.

"There he is."

Luca stared at him.

"Where is the rest of your explanation?"

Adrian looked around the hidden room.

"I see you found everything."

"Not everything."

Luca held up the paper.

"But enough."

Adrian glanced at the documents.

Then looked back at Luca.

"You always were more like your father than you realized."

Luca’s expression hardened.

"Don't talk about him."

"Why?"

Adrian tilted his head.

"Because you still believe he was a good man?"

The words hit.

Luca didn’t answer.

Because his entire life had been built around that belief.

His father was powerful.

Respected.

A man who built an empire from nothing.

A man who taught Luca one important lesson.

Never trust anyone completely.

But Luca never imagined that lesson would include his own family.

Elena stepped forward.

"Stop pretending."

Adrian looked at her.

A small smile appeared.

"Elena."

His voice changed.

Not angry.

Almost disappointed.

"You survived."

"You tried to make sure I didn't."

Adrian sighed.

"You always misunderstood."

Luca looked between them.

"What happened?"

Nobody answered.

That made him angrier.

"What happened?"

His voice shook the room.

"I lost three years of my life."

He pointed at Adrian.

"You knew where she was."

Then at Elena.

"You knew why she left."

His eyes moved to Sofia.

"And I never knew my daughter existed."

The room became silent.

Luca lowered his voice.

"Someone better start talking."

Adrian walked closer.

"Your father created rules for this family."

Luca watched him carefully.

"What rules?"

"That power must stay within blood."

Elena’s face changed.

Luca noticed.

"What?"

Adrian smiled.

"You never asked why Elena disappeared."

"I am asking now."

Adrian looked at Elena.

"She found out something she wasn't supposed to know."

Luca turned toward Elena.

"What?"

Elena looked away.

Adrian answered.

"She found out Sofia was the reason your father changed his will."

Luca froze.

"What are you talking about?"

Adrian continued.

"Your father knew Elena was pregnant."

The room went quiet.

Luca looked at Elena.

She didn't deny it.

"You knew?"

Her silence answered.

Luca stepped back.

"When?"

Elena whispered:

"The night before I disappeared."

Luca looked like the ground had shifted beneath him.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

"Because someone told me you already knew."

Luca frowned.

"What?"

"They showed me documents."

Adrian watched silently.

Elena continued:

"They told me you had chosen the family over me."

Luca looked at Adrian.

"That was a lie."

Adrian didn't respond.

He didn't need to.

His silence was enough.

Luca moved toward him.

Slowly.

Dangerously.

"You destroyed my life."

Adrian looked calm.

"No."

He looked at Sofia.

"I protected it."

Luca’s eyes narrowed.

"From what?"

Adrian’s expression changed.

For the first time, he looked serious.

"From the people who wanted your daughter dead."

The words stopped Luca.

Elena looked at Adrian.

"You don't get to pretend you saved us."

"I did save you."

"You trapped us."

"I hid you."

"You controlled us."

Adrian looked at her.

"Because you were alive."

The room became silent.

Luca looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

Adrian stepped closer.

"Elena wasn't the target."

Luca stared.

"Then who was?"

Adrian looked at Sofia.

Luca immediately understood.

His body became tense.

"My daughter."

Adrian nodded.

"Your daughter."

A cold feeling moved through Luca.

"Who wanted her?"

Adrian looked toward the ceiling.

Then toward the entrance.

"Someone who believes the Moretti empire belongs to them."

Luca clenched his jaw.

"Who?"

Before Adrian could answer, the mansion alarm suddenly activated.

A red light flashed through the hidden room.

Everyone stopped.

Adrian looked surprised.

Actually surprised.

Luca noticed.

"What happened?"

Adrian looked toward the door.

"They found us."

Elena grabbed Sofia.

"Who?"

Adrian didn’t answer.

A loud crash echoed from upstairs.

Then another.

Footsteps.

Many footsteps.

Coming closer.

Luca reached for his weapon.

This time, Adrian didn't stop him.

"Now you understand."

Luca looked at him.

"Understand what?"

Adrian’s face became serious.

"Why I couldn't tell you the truth."

The hidden door suddenly shook.

Someone was trying to break it open.

Maria moved closer to Elena.

Sofia hid behind Luca.

And Luca Moretti stood between his family and whoever was coming.

The door cracked.

One hit.

Then another.

Luca looked at Adrian.

"Who is behind this?"

Adrian stared at the door.

Then whispered:

"The person you trusted after me."

The door began to open.

Slowly.

A familiar voice came from the other side.

"Luca..."

His blood turned cold.

Because the voice belonged to the person who had spent years standing beside him.

May you like

The door opened halfway.

And the person outside said his name again.
