Chapter 2 - The Name Hidden Inside the Necklace

The message on Luca Moretti’s computer screen stayed there for exactly seven seconds.
Seven seconds was enough time for the most powerful man in the city to forget how to breathe.
The black screen displayed only three words.
Elena is alive.
Nobody in the room moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone knew that name.
Not because Luca had ever talked about her.
Because Luca had never talked about her.
For years, his silence had been the only evidence that the woman named Elena had once mattered more than anything else in his life.
Luca slowly reached toward the screen.
His fingers hovered over the message.
A strange feeling moved through him.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Something worse.
Hope.
And Luca Moretti had learned a long time ago that hope was the most dangerous thing a person could carry.
"Who sent this?" one of his men finally asked.
Luca didn’t answer.
His eyes stayed fixed on the screen.
The message disappeared.
The monitor returned to normal.
No trace.
No evidence.
Nothing.
Exactly the way someone like Elena would have done it.
Carefully.
Quietly.
Leaving only enough information to make him search.
Maria stepped backward.
Luca noticed.
That was when he understood.
She wasn’t surprised by the message.
She was afraid of it.
"You knew."
Maria looked at him.
"I don't know what you mean."
"You knew her name."
Silence.
"You knew Elena."
Maria looked down.
Sofia stood beside her mother, holding the necklace tightly.
The little girl looked between them.
She didn’t understand the tension.
She only knew that the man everyone feared suddenly looked like someone who had lost something.
Luca walked closer.
"How long have you known?"
Maria swallowed.
"I didn't know if you were the same man anymore."
Luca’s expression hardened.
"The same man?"
She looked at him.
"The man Elena believed you were."
That sentence cut deeper than any threat.
Because Luca had spent years becoming someone else.
The ruthless businessman.
The untouchable leader.
The man who never apologized.
The man who never trusted anyone.
But Elena had known the person before all of that.
The person who laughed.
The person who believed people could change.
The person who thought love was stronger than power.
Luca looked at Sofia.
"Who is Elena to you?"
The little girl answered before her mother could stop her.
"She’s my mommy."
Maria closed her eyes.
Luca froze.
The words were simple.
But they carried the weight of years.
A child.
A hidden daughter.
A woman who was supposed to be gone.
A past that had returned without warning.
Luca looked at Maria.
"How old is she?"
Maria hesitated.
"Three."
His jaw tightened.
Three years old.
The exact amount of time since Elena disappeared.
The timing was impossible.
And yet the proof was standing in front of him.
Luca turned away.
He needed answers.
Real answers.
Not rumors.
Not lies.
Not another secret buried under someone else's fear.
"Take us somewhere private," he said.
Maria looked shocked.
"Mr. Moretti..."
"Now."
The command was calm.
But everyone in the room understood.
This was not a request.
Ten minutes later, Luca sat across from Maria in a smaller meeting room.
Sofia sat on the sofa between them, coloring on a piece of paper one of Luca’s assistants had found.
A strange picture.
A house.
Three people.
And a man standing far away.
Luca noticed it.
"Who is that?"
Sofia looked up.
"That’s you."
Luca stared at the drawing.
"You drew me?"
She nodded.
"Mama said you would come back."
Maria immediately looked at her.
"Sofia."
The girl stopped.
Luca noticed the reaction.
"What did she mean?"
Maria looked away.
"I shouldn't have brought her here."
"No."
Luca leaned forward.
"You should have brought her here years ago."
Maria’s eyes filled with anger.
Not fear this time.
Anger.
"You think it was that simple?"
The room went quiet.
"You think Elena could just walk back into your life after everything?"
Luca stared at her.
"What happened?"
Maria shook her head.
"I promised I wouldn't tell."
"To who?"
She didn't answer.
Luca’s patience disappeared.
"Maria."
His voice became colder.
"Someone took my family away from me."
Maria looked at him.
"And someone tried to take Elena away from herself."
That stopped him.
"What does that mean?"
Maria looked at Sofia.
Then back at Luca.
"Elena didn't leave because she stopped loving you."
Luca said nothing.
"She left because someone wanted her gone."
The room became still.
"Who?"
Maria looked toward the door.
As if she was afraid someone might be listening.
"I don't know everything."
"But you know something."
Maria nodded slowly.
"Enough to know that Elena was scared."
Luca clenched his hand.
"Scared of who?"
Maria whispered:
"Your own family."
For the first time in years, Luca felt something he thought he had buried.
Betrayal.
Because Luca Moretti trusted almost nobody.
But the people closest to him?
His advisors.
His relatives.
The people who had stood beside him when he built everything?
Those were the people who could hurt him the most.
"Who told Elena to disappear?"
Maria looked down.
"I never saw his face."
"But you heard his voice?"
She nodded.
Luca leaned closer.
"What did he say?"
Maria’s hands trembled.
"He said Elena had to choose."
"Choose what?"
Maria looked at Sofia.
"Her child or your enemies."
Luca’s expression changed.
Because suddenly everything made sense.
The disappearance.
The silence.
The missing years.
Elena hadn’t abandoned him.
She had been protecting something.
Someone.
His daughter.
Sofia suddenly dropped her crayons.
The sound broke the silence.
A small piece of paper fell from her hand.
Luca picked it up.
At first, he thought it was another drawing.
Then he saw the writing.
A child’s handwriting.
Messy.
But readable.
Three words.
Find the basement.
Luca looked at Maria.
Her face turned pale.
"Where did she get that?"
Maria stood immediately.
"I don't know."
Luca looked at Sofia.
"Who told you to write this?"
The little girl looked confused.
"I didn't."
"Then who did?"
She pointed at the necklace.
Luca stared.
"The necklace?"
Sofia nodded.
"Mama said it remembers."
Luca slowly removed the necklace from her hand.
He turned it over.
There was something engraved on the back.
Not the symbol.
Not Elena’s initials.
A set of numbers.
Coordinates.
His eyes narrowed.
"Where did you get this?"
Maria stepped forward.
"Please."
Luca looked at her.
"Where?"
Her voice became almost a whisper.
"Elena left it with Sofia before she disappeared."
"Why?"
Maria looked at the necklace.
"Because she knew one day you would find her."
Luca stared at the numbers.
A location.
A place he knew.
A place connected to his family's old estate.
The abandoned underground basement beneath the original Moretti mansion.
A place that had been sealed for years.
A place nobody was supposed to enter.
Luca stood.
"Get the car."
Maria immediately grabbed Sofia’s hand.
"No."
Luca looked at her.
"You wanted answers."
Maria shook her head.
"You don't understand."
"Then explain."
Her eyes filled with fear.
"That basement is where Elena disappeared."
Before Luca could respond, the lights in the meeting room suddenly went out.
Darkness covered everything.
Sofia gasped.
Maria pulled her close.
Luca reached for the weapon hidden beneath his jacket.
Then his phone vibrated.
One message.
Unknown number.
He opened it.
A photo appeared.
A woman standing inside a dark room.
A woman Luca had spent three years believing he would never see again.
Under the photo were five words.
She is waiting downstairs.
Luca slowly looked toward the locked basement door beneath the old Moretti mansion.
May you like
The door handle moved.
Someone was inside.
