Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Was Never Gone

The person standing behind Luca did not move.

For a few seconds, nobody breathed.

Nobody spoke.

Luca slowly turned around.

The flashlight in his hand moved across the dark room.

First, he saw a shadow.

Then a face.

And finally, a pair of eyes he thought he would never see again.

Elena.

She stood there.

Alive.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Luca forgot how to react.

Every emotion he had buried for three years came back at once.

Anger.

Pain.

Relief.

Confusion.

His hand lowered slowly.

The weapon slipped from his fingers and landed on the floor.

"Elena..."

Her eyes filled with tears.

But she did not move toward him.

She only stared.

Like she was afraid this moment would disappear if she touched it.

Behind Luca, Maria covered Sofia’s eyes.

The little girl pushed her hand away.

"Mommy."

That single word broke the silence.

Elena immediately looked at her daughter.

Then she ran.

She dropped to her knees and hugged Sofia tightly.

For the first time in years, Luca saw something he thought was impossible.

A family together.

But he was not part of it.

Not yet.

He stood there silently.

Watching the woman he loved hold the child he never knew existed.

A child who called someone else’s name before his.

Elena looked up.

Their eyes met.

The room became silent again.

"You found her."

Luca’s voice was cold.

Not because he wanted to be.

Because he was trying not to break.

"You were alive."

Elena looked down.

"I was."

"Three years."

She closed her eyes.

"I know."

"Three years, Elena."

His voice became heavier.

"I buried you."

Elena looked at him.

"I know."

"You let me believe you were dead."

"I had no choice."

Those four words changed something inside him.

"No choice?"

Luca stepped closer.

"You had no choice but to disappear?"

Elena stood slowly.

"Yes."

"From me?"

"From everyone."

Luca laughed quietly.

But there was no happiness in it.

"Everyone?"

He looked around the hidden room.

"You were living under my house."

"I was hiding."

"From who?"

Elena didn't answer immediately.

That was the answer.

Luca’s expression changed.

"Who?"

Elena looked toward Maria.

Then toward Sofia.

Then back at Luca.

"The same person who has been standing beside you for years."

Luca froze.

His uncle.

Again.

But this time, Elena said it.

"Your uncle knew."

The room became still.

Luca stared at her.

"Tell me everything."

Elena looked at Sofia.

"Not here."

"Why?"

"Because this room isn't safe anymore."

Luca looked around.

"What do you mean?"

Elena walked toward the table.

She picked up the phone that had recorded her message.

"He knows you found this place."

Luca frowned.

"Who?"

Elena looked directly at him.

"Your uncle."

A sudden sound echoed above them.

Footsteps.

Multiple footsteps.

Someone was inside the mansion.

Luca immediately became alert.

His instincts returned.

The mafia boss.

The man everyone feared.

He moved toward the entrance.

Elena grabbed his arm.

"No."

Luca looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

"Elena."

"You don't understand."

"I understand someone came into my house."

"No."

Her voice trembled.

"He wants you to think this is your house."

Luca stopped.

"What does that mean?"

Elena looked toward the ceiling.

"He has been controlling everything for years."

A loud noise came from upstairs.

A door opening.

Then voices.

Luca recognized one immediately.

His uncle.

"Luca?"

The voice echoed through the mansion.

Calm.

Confident.

Almost friendly.

Luca’s face hardened.

Elena whispered:

"He knows you are here."

Luca looked at her.

"How?"

Elena didn't answer.

Instead, she walked toward Sofia.

She removed the necklace from her daughter’s neck.

Then she opened the small pendant.

Inside was a tiny piece of paper.

Luca stared.

"What is that?"

Elena handed it to him.

"Proof."

He unfolded it.

A list.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

His family’s secrets.

People who had disappeared.

Deals that had never been explained.

And at the bottom...

A signature.

Luca read it.

His expression changed.

Because the signature belonged to someone he trusted more than anyone.

Someone who had been helping him run the empire.

Someone who had told him Elena was gone forever.

The footsteps above became louder.

Closer.

Elena looked at Luca.

"You need to leave now."

"No."

"Luca."

"I spent three years believing you were dead."

His eyes hardened.

"I am not running again."

For a moment, Elena saw the man she remembered.

The man who protected people.

Not the man who destroyed enemies.

She touched his face.

"You still don't understand."

"Understand what?"

Her voice became a whisper.

"Your uncle didn't want me gone."

Luca stared.

"Then what did he want?"

Elena looked at Sofia.

Then back at him.

"He wanted your daughter."

The words hit him.

Before Luca could answer, the mansion lights suddenly turned on.

A voice came through the hidden room’s speaker.

A voice Luca knew.

"Brother."

Luca froze.

Nobody had called him that in years.

The speaker continued.

"You finally found the truth."

Elena’s face went pale.

Because she recognized the voice.

"Luca..."

He looked at her.

"Who is it?"

Her lips moved slowly.

"The person who helped me disappear."

The speaker clicked.

Then the voice said:

"And the person who raised Sofia when you couldn't."

Luca looked toward the hidden doorway.

A shadow appeared.

Someone was standing there.

Holding a photograph.

A photograph of Sofia as a baby.

May you like

And behind the person was the man Luca thought he could trust most.

His uncle.
