Chapter 4 - The Woman Behind the Hidden Door

The door opened slowly.
Luca Moretti stepped forward.
The room behind it was not a basement.
It was a hidden apartment.
A small living space buried beneath the Moretti mansion.
A place where someone had been hiding.
The first thing Luca noticed was the photograph on the table.
A photograph of Elena.
Older than the last picture he had seen.
But alive.
Standing beside a window.
Holding a baby.
His hands became cold.
Because he knew that baby.
Sofia.
"She was here..." Luca whispered.
Maria stood behind him.
Her silence was the answer.
Luca walked deeper into the room.
The air felt different.
This was not a forgotten place.
Someone had lived here.
There were books on the shelves.
Clothes folded neatly.
Children’s drawings attached to the wall.
Three years of memories hidden beneath his own house.
Three years of a life he never knew existed.
A life Elena had created without him.
A life that had been taken from him.
Luca touched one of the drawings.
It showed three people holding hands.
A woman.
A little girl.
And a man.
The man had a large black suit.
Sofia’s drawing.
"She drew me."
Maria nodded.
"She always did."
Luca looked at her.
"She knew who I was?"
Maria looked away.
"Elena talked about you every day."
Those words hurt more than anger.
Because Luca had spent years believing Elena had chosen to leave.
That she had forgotten him.
That she had moved on.
But she hadn’t.
She had been here.
Waiting.
Watching.
Protecting their daughter.
Luca walked toward the table.
There was another envelope.
This one had no name.
Only one word.
For Luca.
He opened it.
Inside was a small key.
And a note.
The truth is not in this room.
The person who betrayed us is still pretending to protect you.
Luca read it twice.
Then his eyes narrowed.
"Someone close to me."
Maria nodded.
"Yes."
"Who?"
Maria hesitated.
"Luca..."
"Who?"
Her voice became quiet.
"Your uncle."
The room went silent.
Luca stared at her.
His uncle.
The man who had raised him after his father died.
The man who had taught him how to run the business.
The man who always told him that family was everything.
Luca slowly closed his hand around the key.
"No."
Maria looked at him.
"You don't want to believe it."
"I know my family."
Maria shook her head.
"No."
She looked at the hidden room around them.
"You know the family they showed you."
That sentence stayed in the air.
Because deep down, Luca knew she was right.
His entire life had been built on secrets.
Every deal.
Every alliance.
Every promise.
Someone had always controlled what he knew.
A sound suddenly came from behind them.
A small footstep.
Luca turned.
Sofia was standing at the doorway.
She looked at the room.
Then smiled.
"Mama said this was where she sang to me."
Luca looked at Maria.
"She stayed here with her?"
Maria nodded.
"For almost a year."
"Why didn't she leave?"
Maria's eyes filled with sadness.
"Because she was waiting for the right time."
"The right time for what?"
Maria looked at him.
"For you to become someone who could protect her."
Luca looked down.
Those words hurt.
Because Elena had known something about him.
Something he refused to accept.
Power was not enough.
Money was not enough.
Fear was not enough.
He could control an entire city.
But he couldn’t protect the person he loved.
Not before.
Not then.
Not now.
Luca walked toward Sofia.
He slowly lowered himself.
"Sofia."
The little girl looked at him.
"Yes?"
"Did your mother ever talk about me?"
She nodded.
"She said you were nice before you became scary."
For the first time in years, Luca almost smiled.
"Did she say anything else?"
Sofia thought for a moment.
Then she whispered:
"She said you would be angry."
Luca looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because you would think she left you."
His heart stopped.
Because Elena knew him.
She knew exactly what he would feel.
Exactly what he would think.
Sofia continued:
"But she didn't leave."
Luca looked up.
"Then where did she go?"
The little girl pointed toward another door inside the hidden room.
A door Luca had not noticed.
A small wooden door.
Behind it was a symbol.
The same symbol.
The necklace.
Maria immediately became pale.
"No."
Luca stood.
"What?"
"That door wasn't supposed to open."
"Why?"
Maria stepped backward.
"Because Elena said if you found it, then it meant they already knew."
Luca looked at the door.
"Who knew?"
Maria didn't answer.
Then every light in the hidden room turned off.
Darkness swallowed everything.
Sofia grabbed Luca’s hand.
A sound came from the other side of the wooden door.
A voice.
A woman’s voice.
Soft.
Broken.
A voice Luca knew better than anyone.
"Luca..."
He stopped breathing.
No one had said his name like that in years.
Maria covered her mouth.
Because she recognized it too.
Luca slowly moved toward the door.
The voice came again.
"Luca, don't trust them."
His hand reached for the handle.
Behind him, Maria whispered:
"Mr. Moretti..."
Luca ignored her.
He opened the door.
A small room appeared.
Empty.
Almost.
On the floor was a phone.
The screen was still recording.
Luca picked it up.
A video file was open.
Created three minutes ago.
The title was:
The Last Message From Elena.
Luca pressed play.
The screen turned black.
Then a voice whispered:
"If you are watching this, it means they finally found Sofia..."
The video stopped.
A new message appeared on the phone.
One sentence.
Turn around.
May you like
Luca slowly lifted his eyes.
Someone was standing behind him.
