Chapter 3 - The Door Beneath the Moretti Mansion

The basement door moved again.
Slowly.
Almost like someone on the other side knew Luca Moretti was standing there.
The old wooden door had been locked for three years.
Three years since Elena disappeared.
Three years since Luca stopped believing that anyone could tell him the truth.
Now, for the first time, something was waiting for him behind it.
Luca held his gun firmly.
Maria stood behind him, holding Sofia close.
The little girl looked at the door.
Then she whispered:
"Mommy is inside."
Luca turned.
"What did you say?"
Sofia pointed.
"She told me to wait here until you came."
Maria’s face changed.
Not surprise.
Fear.
"She talked to you?"
Sofia nodded.
"Before she left."
Luca stared at Maria.
"You knew."
Maria looked away.
"I knew Elena was trying to protect her."
"From who?"
Maria didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Luca reached for the door handle.
The lock was already broken.
Someone had opened it recently.
He pushed the door.
The basement opened into darkness.
Cold air escaped.
A smell of old paper and dust filled the hallway.
Luca stepped inside.
Every instinct told him something was wrong.
The Moretti family had owned this mansion for decades.
But this basement was different.
It felt hidden.
Forgotten.
Like someone had erased it from the history of the family.
The walls were covered with old photographs.
Family photographs.
Luca moved his flashlight across them.
Then he stopped.
One picture caught his attention.
Elena.
She was standing beside him.
Years ago.
Before everything changed.
Before the lies.
Before the disappearance.
Luca reached toward the photograph.
His fingers touched the glass.
He remembered that day.
Elena had smiled at him and said something he never forgot.
"Promise me you won't become like them."
At the time, he didn't understand.
Now he did.
She wasn't talking about enemies.
She was talking about his family.
A sound came from deeper inside the basement.
Luca immediately raised his weapon.
"Show yourself."
Nothing.
Then a small voice came from behind him.
"Daddy?"
Luca froze.
He turned.
Sofia was standing at the entrance.
Maria had followed her.
Luca lowered his weapon.
"Sofia, stay with your mother."
The little girl looked around.
"Mommy said there was something here for you."
Luca looked at Maria.
"What else did Elena leave?"
Maria hesitated.
Then she reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Luca stared.
"You had that the entire time?"
Maria looked guilty.
"Elena made me promise."
"Promise what?"
"Only give it to you when Sofia found you."
Luca took the envelope.
His name was written on the front.
Not printed.
Handwritten.
Elena’s handwriting.
His hands tightened.
For years, he had imagined seeing her again.
He imagined anger.
Questions.
A thousand things he would say.
But holding her handwriting in his hands felt worse.
Because it meant she had been alive when he thought she was gone.
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
Only a few sentences.
Luca,
If Sofia is with you, then I failed to come back myself.
Do not trust anyone carrying the Moretti name.
The person who destroyed us is closer than you think.
Luca stopped reading.
His eyes moved back to the final line.
The truth is hidden where your father kept his last secret.
The paper slipped slightly from his fingers.
His father.
The man who built the Moretti empire.
The man who taught Luca that weakness was dangerous.
The man who died believing he had no secrets.
Apparently, he was wrong.
Maria stepped closer.
"What did she say?"
Luca folded the letter.
"She knew someone in my family betrayed her."
Maria looked down.
"She knew more than that."
Luca looked at her.
"What aren't you telling me?"
Maria was silent.
Then she whispered:
"Elena didn't disappear alone."
Luca felt his chest tighten.
"What does that mean?"
Maria looked at Sofia.
"She was being followed."
"By who?"
"I don't know."
"You're lying."
Maria's eyes filled with tears.
"I saw someone watching her."
"Who?"
Maria shook her head.
"I never saw his face."
Before Luca could respond, a loud sound echoed from the back of the basement.
A door closing.
Everyone froze.
Luca moved immediately.
He walked deeper into the room.
The flashlight revealed a hidden hallway behind an old bookshelf.
A hallway that shouldn't exist.
Someone had built a secret passage beneath the mansion.
Luca looked at the walls.
Then he saw it.
A small mark carved into the stone.
The same symbol from Sofia’s necklace.
His breathing slowed.
Because Elena had not left a random clue.
She had left a path.
Luca followed it.
At the end of the hallway was another door.
Newer.
Cleaner.
Recently used.
He reached for the handle.
Then his phone vibrated.
Another message.
Unknown number.
This time, there was no photo.
Only words.
Luca, if you open that door, you will learn why Elena ran from you.
He stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
And why your daughter was never supposed to survive.
Behind him, Maria gasped.
Luca looked at Sofia.
The little girl was staring at the door.
Whispering one name.
"Mommy."
Luca slowly reached for the handle.
May you like
The door unlocked from the inside.
Someone was waiting for him.
