Chapter 9 - The Secret I Was Forced To Hide

For three years, I had lived with a secret.
A secret so painful that I convinced myself silence was the same as protection.
I told myself that if I never spoke about it…
If I never opened that door…
If I never let anyone know the truth…
Then Emma would be safe.
But standing inside the Duca mansion, surrounded by people who had spent years hiding their own secrets, I realized something.
Secrets did not disappear.
They waited.
They grew.
And eventually…
They demanded to be revealed.
The room felt smaller than before.
Everyone was looking at me.
Lorenzo.
Elena.
Victor.
Matteo.
Even the guards standing near the entrance.
But the only person I cared about was the little girl holding my hand.
“Mama?”
Emma’s voice was soft.
Confused.
She looked up at me with the same innocent eyes that had looked at Lorenzo in the gardening shed.
Eyes that had never judged anyone.
Eyes that had only ever seen someone who needed help.
I swallowed.
Because she deserved the truth.
But she also deserved a childhood.
A normal life.
A life without the darkness surrounding the Duca family.
Lorenzo stared at me.
Not with anger.
Not with accusation.
With uncertainty.
“Anna…”
His voice was quiet.
“Who is Emma?”
The question hurt more than I expected.
Because there was only one answer.
And once I said it…
Everything would change.
Matteo smiled from across the room.
He enjoyed watching people break.
That was the kind of person he was.
He didn’t need weapons.
He didn’t need violence.
He only needed secrets.
“Tell him,” Matteo said.
“You owe him that much.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
His smile faded slightly.
“You don’t get to decide.”
I stepped closer to Emma.
“I decide everything when it comes to my daughter.”
For the first time, Matteo’s expression changed.
A small flash of irritation.
Because he was used to controlling people.
But I wasn’t one of his employees.
I wasn’t part of his family.
I was a mother.
And mothers did impossible things when their children were threatened.
Lorenzo noticed.
He looked at Matteo.
Then back at me.
“Start from the beginning.”
I closed my eyes.
And remembered the day everything changed.
Three years earlier…
Before I wore the maid uniform.
Before I entered the Duca mansion.
Before I knew anything about Lorenzo.
I was just a woman trying to survive.
My husband had died.
My dreams had disappeared.
And I was alone.
Then one night…
I found a baby.
Not Emma.
Not yet.
A newborn child abandoned outside a small church near the countryside.
There was a note.
Only one sentence.
Protect her from the Duca family.
At first, I didn’t understand.
I didn’t know what the name meant.
I didn’t know why someone would leave a child with a warning.
But when I picked her up…
When she looked at me…
I knew I couldn’t walk away.
I named her Emma.
I became her mother.
Not because of blood.
Because love was a choice.
A decision you made every day.
I looked at Lorenzo.
“She wasn’t born mine.”
His expression changed.
But he didn’t speak.
“She became mine.”
I held Emma closer.
“She was my daughter because I raised her. Because I loved her.”
Matteo laughed softly.
“But you don’t know who she belongs to.”
I ignored him.
I looked only at Lorenzo.
“Three months ago, I discovered something.”
My voice became quieter.
“The reason people were searching for her.”
The room became silent.
Lorenzo stepped closer.
“Who is she?”
I looked at Emma.
Then answered.
“She is Adrian Duca’s daughter.”
Nobody moved.
The silence afterward felt endless.
Even the air seemed to stop.
Lorenzo stared at Emma.
Like his mind could not understand the words.
“No.”
The word came out softly.
Not angry.
Just broken.
“No…”
I nodded.
“She’s Isabella.”
The name echoed through the room.
The child everyone thought was lost.
The child hidden from the world.
The child connected to the greatest betrayal in the Duca family.
Emma looked confused.
“Isabella?”
She looked at me.
“Is that my other name?”
My heart broke.
Because she was too young to understand.
Too young to know that adults had spent years fighting over her existence.
Lorenzo slowly stepped back.
His eyes filled with emotions I had never seen before.
Pain.
Shock.
Hope.
And grief.
“My brother…”
His voice cracked.
“My brother had a daughter.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
“How did you find her?”
I looked down.
“I didn’t.”
A pause.
“She found me.”
I explained everything.
The night I discovered her.
The note.
The warning.
The fear.
The years I spent hiding her identity because I knew someone powerful wanted her gone.
Lorenzo listened silently.
But Matteo interrupted.
“Convenient story.”
I turned.
“What?”
He smiled.
“You expect us to believe you just found the missing heir and decided to keep her?”
Anger rose inside me.
“She was a child.”
“And a valuable one.”
His words were cold.
“That child is the key to controlling the Duca empire.”
Lorenzo’s expression darkened.
“She is not a key.”
Matteo looked at him.
“There it is.”
A smile appeared.
“The weakness.”
Lorenzo stepped forward.
“She is a person.”
“No.”
Matteo shook his head.
“She is proof.”
He looked around.
“Proof that everything you believed about your family was a lie.”
Nobody answered.
Because that part was true.
The Duca family was built on secrets.
But Emma…
Emma was different.
She wasn’t a weapon.
She wasn’t evidence.
She was a child.
Lorenzo looked at me.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
The question hurt.
Because I knew he had a right to ask.
“I was afraid.”
“Of me?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
I looked at Matteo.
“Of people like them.”
Lorenzo became quiet.
Because he understood.
People had used his family name to hurt others.
To control others.
To destroy innocent lives.
And I had spent years protecting Emma from that.
A sudden sound came from upstairs.
A crash.
Everyone turned.
Then one of the guards rushed into the room.
“Sir…”
Lorenzo looked at him.
“What?”
The guard hesitated.
“We found something in the east wing.”
“What?”
The guard held out a small device.
“A recording.”
Victor’s expression changed.
“What kind of recording?”
The guard looked nervous.
“One from Adrian.”
Everything stopped.
Lorenzo immediately took it.
His hands shook.
Another message from his brother.
Another piece of the truth.
He pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Adrian’s voice appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
“If you are hearing this…”
A pause.
“Then they failed.”
Lorenzo closed his eyes.
His brother.
After all these years.
“Lorenzo…”
The voice continued.
“I need you to know something.”
Everyone listened.
“My daughter is not the only thing they hid from you.”
The room became colder.
“There is another secret.”
Lorenzo opened his eyes.
Adrian’s voice became quieter.
“The person who betrayed our family…”
A pause.
“The person who destroyed everything…”
Then the recording ended.
Everyone froze.
Because the message was incomplete.
But one thing was clear.
The truth was not finished.
Matteo smiled.
“You see?”
He looked at Lorenzo.
“Even your brother left you another mystery.”
Lorenzo ignored him.
He looked at Emma.
Then at me.
Then at the recording.
And I saw something change.
He was no longer searching for revenge.
He was searching for answers.
For Adrian.
For Isabella.
For the truth.
Then the mansion lights suddenly went out.
A scream came from upstairs.
And when the emergency lights turned on…
Emma was gone.
My heart stopped.
“Emma?”
No answer.
I ran.
Lorenzo ran with me.
And on the floor where she had been standing…
Was her stuffed rabbit.
Beside it…
A note.
Only four words.
I HAVE HER NOW.
And beneath it…
A signature.
The person we had been searching for all along.
The person who had controlled everything.
May you like
The person who had taken my daughter.
Adrian Duca.
