Chapter 7 - The Man Behind The Shadows

The first thing I heard was the sound of footsteps.

Not one person.

Many.

The Duca mansion had always been a place filled with movement.

Servants walking through halls.

Guards patrolling the property.

Guests arriving for meetings.

But this was different.

These footsteps carried purpose.

They weren’t coming to visit.

They weren’t coming to negotiate.

They were coming to take something.

Or someone.

Emma held onto my hand so tightly that I could feel her small fingers shaking.

She was trying to be brave.

Trying to pretend she wasn’t scared.

But she was only three years old.

No child should have to learn how to hide fear in a mansion full of enemies.

I knelt beside her.

“Emma.”

She looked at me.

“Yes, Mama?”

“You remember what I told you?”

She nodded.

“Stay close.”

“And?”

She looked at Lorenzo.

“Stay with people who protect me.”

My heart tightened.

Because she had understood everything.

Not the details.

Not the danger.

But the feeling.

She knew there were people trying to hurt us.

And she knew Lorenzo was standing between us and them.

Lorenzo watched her quietly.

Then he looked toward the entrance.

The man who had spent his entire life being protected by others was now the one protecting someone else.

Something inside him had changed.

I could see it.

The old Lorenzo would have sent everyone away.

He would have handled the threat alone.

He would have trusted nobody.

But now…

He looked back at us.

And he didn’t walk away.

The mansion lights flickered again.

The message on the computer screen disappeared.

But the warning remained.

STOP LOOKING FOR ISABELLA.

OR YOU WILL LOSE EMMA TOO.

Those words had changed everything.

Because whoever was behind this knew exactly where to attack.

They didn’t care about Lorenzo’s money.

They didn’t care about his power.

They understood something much more dangerous.

They understood his heart.

“Whoever did this knows about Emma,” I whispered.

Lorenzo nodded.

“Yes.”

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

That worried me.

“What are you thinking?”

He looked at the documents scattered across the table.

“The same person who hid Isabella has been watching me for years.”

He picked up one of the old photographs.

“They know my family.”

He looked at another file.

“They know my weaknesses.”

Then he looked at Emma.

“And now they know hers.”

I stepped closer.

“Don’t say that.”

His eyes moved to mine.

“What?”

“She is not a weakness.”

For a moment, Lorenzo said nothing.

Then I continued.

“She is the reason you’re fighting.”

The words stayed between us.

Because they were true.

Before Emma entered his life, Lorenzo fought because he wanted to win.

Now he fought because he wanted someone else to survive.

A different kind of power.

A better one.

A loud crash came from the main entrance.

The doors shook.

The people outside were no longer waiting.

They were coming in.

Lorenzo immediately moved.

“Stay here.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

His eyes narrowed.

“This is dangerous.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

I looked at Emma.

“Because I’ve spent my entire life protecting my daughter.”

I stepped closer.

“And I’m not stopping now.”

For a few seconds, Lorenzo stared at me.

Then he nodded.

Not because he wanted to.

Because he respected it.

He turned toward the hallway.

“Then we do this together.”

The doors finally opened.

Several men entered.

But they weren’t wearing the clothes of Marco’s soldiers.

They wore simple black suits.

Professional.

Controlled.

At the front was a man I had never seen before.

Older.

Silver hair.

Calm eyes.

The kind of person who didn’t need to show power because everyone already knew he had it.

He looked around the room.

Then his eyes stopped on Lorenzo.

“After all these years…”

His voice was quiet.

“You finally found the truth.”

Lorenzo stared.

“Victor.”

My entire body froze.

Victor Salvatore.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

The man whose name had appeared in the documents.

The man controlling the shadows.

Lorenzo’s face became unreadable.

“You died.”

Victor smiled slightly.

“That was the idea.”

Nobody moved.

Even the armed men behind him remained silent.

Because this was not a simple attack.

This was a conversation that had been waiting years to happen.

Lorenzo stepped forward.

“You killed Adrian.”

Victor looked almost disappointed.

“No.”

That answer surprised everyone.

“No?”

Victor shook his head.

“Adrian was smarter than all of us.”

He looked around the mansion.

“He discovered what your father had done.”

Lorenzo’s expression hardened.

“Then why hide him?”

Victor looked at him.

“Because your father wanted him dead.”

Silence.

The words hit harder than any weapon.

Lorenzo didn’t move.

Victor continued.

“And I saved him.”

I looked at him carefully.

“You expect us to believe that?”

Victor looked at me.

“You should not trust me.”

The honesty surprised me.

“But you should know the truth.”

He reached inside his coat.

Everyone reacted.

But he slowly pulled out a small envelope.

Not a weapon.

A letter.

He placed it on the table.

“This belonged to Adrian.”

Lorenzo stared at it.

His hands tightened.

“Where is he?”

Victor looked away.

“Dead.”

The room became silent.

“But not the way you were told.”

Lorenzo picked up the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Adrian.

A young Isabella.

And another person.

Someone standing behind them.

Someone Lorenzo recognized.

His father.

But not the father he remembered.

This picture showed something different.

A father hiding something.

A father afraid.

On the back of the photograph was a message.

Written by Adrian.

"Lorenzo, if you are reading this, then they failed to stop you."

Lorenzo froze.

I watched him read the next line.

"The person controlling everything is not the person you think."

His breathing changed.

Then he read the final sentence.

And whatever he saw…

Destroyed him.

He slowly lowered the paper.

“What?”

I whispered.

He looked at Victor.

Then at me.

Then at Emma.

“My father…”

His voice broke.

“My father was not the mastermind.”

Nobody spoke.

“Then who?” I asked.

Lorenzo looked at the letter again.

And his face became filled with disbelief.

“Someone closer.”

The room became colder.

Victor looked toward the hallway.

Almost like he was afraid of something.

Or someone.

Then the mansion speakers turned on.

A woman's voice filled the room.

The same voice from the recording.

Calm.

Elegant.

Familiar.

“You always were slow, Lorenzo.”

Everyone froze.

The woman laughed softly.

“You found the room.”

A pause.

“You found Adrian’s daughter.”

Another pause.

“But you still haven’t found me.”

Lorenzo looked toward the speakers.

“Show yourself.”

Her answer came immediately.

“I already did.”

The lights turned on.

Everyone turned.

And standing at the top of the staircase…

Was the woman who had spent the entire night pretending to be innocent.

The woman who had arranged Lorenzo’s funeral.

The woman whose voice had started this nightmare.

But there was something different now.

She was not afraid.

She was smiling.

Lorenzo stared at her.

“You.”

She slowly walked down the stairs.

“Yes.”

Victor stepped back.

And that was when I understood.

Even he was afraid of her.

The woman stopped in front of Lorenzo.

“I told you.”

Her voice was soft.

“You were never good at understanding people.”

Lorenzo’s fists tightened.

“Why?”

She looked at him.

And for the first time…

I saw something in her eyes.

Not hatred.

Not anger.

Something worse.

A belief that she was right.

“Because your family destroyed everything I loved.”

The mansion became silent.

“This was never about power.”

She looked at Emma.

“It was about revenge.”

I immediately moved closer to my daughter.

The woman smiled.

“Don’t worry.”

Her eyes returned to Lorenzo.

“I don’t want the child.”

A pause.

“I want you to feel what I felt.”

Lorenzo stared.

The woman took one final step forward.

“I want you to lose the person you love most.”

And in that moment…

I understood.

This war had never been about money.

Never been about an empire.

It was about pain.

One person’s pain spreading until everyone around them suffered.

Lorenzo looked at Emma.

Then at me.

Then back at the woman who had destroyed his family.

And he said something I never expected.

“You’re wrong.”

She smiled.

“About what?”

He looked at the little girl holding his hand.

“Pain doesn’t have to create more pain.”

For the first time…

The woman’s expression changed.

Because she realized something.

Lorenzo Duca was no longer the man she planned to destroy.

He was someone different.

Someone who had found a reason to fight.

May you like

And standing beside him…

Was the little girl who had taught him how.
