Chapter 2 - The Secret Beneath The Mansion

The first thing I noticed after we closed the trapdoor was the silence.
Not the peaceful kind.
The kind of silence that made you realize the world above us was still moving without us.
The rain continued falling.
The men continued searching.
And somewhere above our heads, people who wanted Lorenzo Duca dead were standing only inches away from where we had disappeared.
Emma held my hand tightly.
Her tiny fingers wrapped around mine as we stood in complete darkness.
On my other side, Lorenzo leaned heavily against the stone wall.
The man who had controlled an empire was now struggling just to remain standing.
A few hours earlier, I would have been afraid of him.
I would have lowered my eyes when he walked past.
I would have remembered every rumor I had ever heard.
The stories.
The warnings.
The fear surrounding his name.
But seeing him like this changed something.
Fear was easier when someone seemed untouchable.
It was harder when you saw the blood.
The pain.
The exhaustion.
The fact that even powerful men could fall.
A small sound came from Emma.
“Mama?”
I looked down.
“Yes, baby?”
“Is he going to be okay?”
I looked at Lorenzo.
For a moment, I didn’t know what to say.
Because I was afraid too.
Not of him.
For him.
“I don’t know,” I whispered.
Emma looked at Lorenzo’s face.
Then she squeezed his fingers.
“But he has to be.”
Lorenzo opened his eyes slightly.
He had heard her.
“You always talk to strangers like that?” he asked weakly.
Emma tilted her head.
“No.”
A faint smile almost appeared on his face.
“No?”
She shook her head.
“I only talk to people who are hurt.”
Something changed in Lorenzo’s expression.
A small crack appeared in the cold mask everyone knew.
Because nobody had ever spoken to him like that.
Nobody had ever looked at Lorenzo Duca and seen a wounded person before seeing his reputation.
I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small cloth.
“You need pressure on the wound.”
Lorenzo watched as I moved closer.
“You’re not afraid of me.”
It wasn’t a question.
It was an observation.
I looked at him.
“I was.”
His eyes narrowed slightly.
“But?”
“But my daughter was never afraid.”
I looked at Emma.
She was sitting on the stone floor, holding her stuffed rabbit.
She looked completely convinced that everything would be fine.
Children had a strange kind of courage.
They didn’t understand how dangerous the world could be.
Maybe that was why they were brave enough to change it.
I pressed the cloth against Lorenzo’s injury.
He clenched his jaw.
“You were a nurse.”
I looked at him.
“How do you know?”
“Your hands.”
I frowned.
“My hands?”
“You don’t panic.”
His voice was quiet.
“You look at blood like you’ve seen it before.”
I didn’t answer.
Because I had.
But not like this.
Not in a hidden room beneath a mansion.
Not while armed men hunted us.
The emergency lights suddenly flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then they came alive.
And what appeared in front of us made all three of us stop.
This wasn’t a storm shelter.
This wasn’t an escape tunnel.
This was something else.
Something much bigger.
The room stretched farther than I expected.
Stone walls surrounded us.
Old shelves lined one side.
But the things sitting on those shelves were not tools or supplies.
They were boxes.
Hundreds of them.
Documents.
Photographs.
Old recordings.
The opposite wall was covered with monitors.
Some were broken.
Some showed different parts of the mansion.
The garden.
The halls.
The front entrance.
The private rooms.
Someone had been watching everything.
For years.
Emma looked around.
“Is this a secret room?”
Lorenzo didn’t answer.
He was staring.
His face had lost all color.
“My father built this.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
He walked slowly toward the monitors.
His fingers touched the dusty surface.
“My father believed secrets were more valuable than money.”
A bitter laugh escaped him.
“He was right.”
He opened one of the drawers.
Inside were photographs.
Family photographs.
But they were not normal memories.
They were evidence.
People meeting in secret.
Documents being exchanged.
Conversations captured from hidden cameras.
Lorenzo picked up one picture.
His expression changed.
“What is it?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
I stepped closer.
The photograph showed a group of people standing outside the mansion years ago.
Among them was a younger Lorenzo.
Beside him was his father.
And another person.
Someone familiar.
Someone who had been upstairs that evening.
The woman arranging flowers.
The woman preparing his funeral before he was even dead.
I felt a chill.
“That’s her.”
Lorenzo looked at me.
“You know her?”
“She was here tonight.”
His hand tightened around the photograph.
“No.”
The word came out almost like a whisper.
“No, she wouldn’t.”
But I had seen her.
Calm.
Collected.
Almost too calm.
While everyone else was worried.
While everyone else was afraid.
Lorenzo turned away.
For the first time, I saw uncertainty in him.
Not anger.
Not suspicion.
Pain.
“You trust her.”
I said it quietly.
He didn’t respond.
Which was an answer.
Above us, a loud noise echoed.
A heavy object moved across the floor.
The men were still searching.
Emma immediately grabbed my dress.
“Mama.”
I put my finger to my lips.
“Quiet, baby.”
Lorenzo looked toward the ceiling.
“They won’t stop.”
“No.”
I looked around the room.
“Then we need to find another way out.”
Lorenzo walked toward the far wall.
He studied the old systems.
Then he stopped.
“There.”
A small red light blinked beside an old recorder.
The machine was still running.
Still recording.
Lorenzo stared at it.
“Why would my father leave this activated?”
I walked closer.
“Maybe he wanted someone to find it.”
Lorenzo looked at me.
“Or maybe he wanted someone to hear it.”
The three of us stood there.
Nobody moved.
Then Lorenzo pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then a woman's voice came through the speakers.
Clear.
Calm.
Cold.
“Once Lorenzo is dead, the family becomes mine.”
Lorenzo froze.
I watched his entire body change.
The pain disappeared.
The exhaustion disappeared.
Only shock remained.
The voice continued.
“He has spent his entire life believing loyalty protects him.”
A pause.
“He never understood that loyalty is the easiest thing to fake.”
My heart started beating faster.
Because I knew that voice.
Lorenzo knew it too.
The recording continued.
“By the time anyone realizes what happened, Lorenzo Duca will already be buried.”
Silence.
Then one final sentence.
“And I will inherit everything.”
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Emma looked between us.
She didn’t understand the words.
But she understood our faces.
She understood fear.
“Lorenzo?”
He slowly turned toward me.
His eyes were no longer the eyes of a wounded man.
They were the eyes of someone who had just discovered the greatest betrayal of his life.
“Who was she?”
I already knew.
But saying it out loud felt dangerous.
Because once the truth had a name…
There was no going back.
I swallowed.
“The woman who was arranging flowers tonight.”
Lorenzo stared at me.
“The woman preparing your funeral.”
His expression hardened.
“What is her name?”
I whispered:
“Your family’s most trusted person.”
A long silence filled the hidden room.
Then Lorenzo looked back at the recorder.
At the evidence.
At the secrets his own family had hidden beneath his own home.
And quietly, he said:
“Someone in my family wanted me dead.”
Emma stepped closer to him.
She held up her little stuffed rabbit.
“Don’t be sad.”
Lorenzo looked down at her.
For a moment, the dangerous man disappeared.
And only a broken person remained.
“Why are you helping me?”
Emma answered without hesitation.
“Because you were alone.”
Those four words affected him more than any threat ever could.
Because Lorenzo Duca had spent his entire life surrounded by people.
Guards.
Employees.
Family.
Enemies.
But somehow…
A three-year-old child had seen the truth.
He was alone.
And now, beneath his own mansion…
With a hidden room full of secrets…
He finally understood something.
The person who wanted him dead was not outside his walls.
They had been living inside them all along.
A sudden sound interrupted us.
A metallic click.
The hidden room door began to move.
Someone had found the entrance.
Lorenzo immediately stepped forward.
But his injury made him stumble.
I grabbed his arm.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“They’re coming.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you stopping me?”
I looked at Emma.
Then back at him.
“Because tonight, you’re not fighting alone anymore.”
For the first time…
Lorenzo Duca believed someone might actually be on his side.
But above us…
The people hunting him were getting closer.
May you like
And they had no idea that the secret they were trying to bury…
had just been uncovered.
