Chapter 1 - The Night My Daughter Found the Man Everyone Wanted Dead

I never imagined that my three-year-old daughter would become the only person standing between a powerful man and death.
Especially not a man like Lorenzo Duca.
For years, people whispered his name in fear.
They said he controlled half the city from the shadows. They said businessmen lowered their voices when he entered a room. They said even his enemies respected him because Lorenzo Duca was the kind of man who never needed to raise his voice to make people obey.
He was a mafia boss.
A man surrounded by secrets.
A man who trusted almost nobody.
And yet, on the night everything changed, the person who saved him was a little girl carrying a stuffed rabbit and a plastic toy first-aid kit.
My daughter Emma had no idea who he was.
She didn’t see a feared criminal.
She didn’t see a powerful man.
She only saw someone hurt.
Someone who needed help.
That was who Emma had always been.
Too kind for a world that rarely rewarded kindness.
The night it happened, rain had covered the entire Duca estate.
The mansion stood at the edge of the countryside, surrounded by tall iron gates, endless gardens, and old stone walls that looked like they had been guarding secrets for generations.
I worked there as a maid.
That was the only position I could find after life forced me to abandon my dreams of becoming a nurse.
Before my husband died, I had been almost finished with nursing school.
I knew how to recognize injuries.
I knew how to stop bleeding.
I knew how to keep someone alive.
But after losing my husband, everything changed.
Bills came first.
Survival came first.
So I traded my textbooks for a uniform and became another invisible person walking through the halls of a mansion where powerful people made decisions that changed other people's lives.
Nobody noticed the maid.
And sometimes, being unnoticed was the safest place to be.
Especially inside the Duca mansion.
That evening, something felt wrong.
The entire house was unusually quiet.
Normally, there were guards everywhere.
Phones ringing.
People coming and going.
But that night, everyone seemed nervous.
I saw men in expensive suits speaking in whispers.
I saw Lorenzo's right-hand men moving quickly through the halls.
And I saw a woman wearing a perfectly calm expression while everyone else looked afraid.
She was arranging flowers.
Preparing dinner.
Smiling.
Like nothing in the world was wrong.
At the time, I didn't understand why that bothered me.
I would later realize that the most dangerous people are often the ones who never look dangerous.
After finishing my work, I went searching for Emma.
She had been playing near the garden earlier.
I found her stuffed rabbit near the back entrance.
My heart immediately dropped.
Emma never went anywhere without that rabbit.
“Emma?” I called.
No answer.
I walked deeper into the garden.
The rain soaked through my clothes.
“Emma!”
Then I heard something.
A tiny voice.
Talking to someone.
I followed the sound toward the old gardening shed.
The shed was rarely used anymore.
Most of the staff avoided it because it was old, dark, and filled with forgotten tools.
I pushed open the wooden door.
And froze.
My daughter was kneeling on the floor beside a man covered in blood.
For a moment, my brain refused to understand what I was seeing.
Then I recognized him.
Lorenzo Duca.
The most feared man in the city.
The man whose enemies would do anything to destroy him.
And he was lying helplessly on the dirty floor of an abandoned shed.
His white shirt was soaked red.
His breathing was weak.
His face was pale.
But my daughter was sitting beside him like he was just another person who needed a friend.
Her pink dress was covered in mud.
Her little hands were shaking.
But she looked determined.
Beside her was her toy first-aid kit.
And above Lorenzo's eyebrow was a small cartoon bandage with a smiling bear.
I stared.
Then I whispered:
“Emma…”
She looked back at me.
Her eyes were full of concern.
“He’s hurt, Mama.”
I couldn't move.
Outside the shed, thunder rolled across the sky.
Then came another sound.
Footsteps.
Heavy footsteps.
Multiple people.
A man's voice cut through the rain.
“Search the garden!”
My blood turned cold.
“Marco said he came this way.”
Lorenzo's eyes suddenly opened.
Even injured, there was something terrifying about him.
His hand moved toward his jacket.
Toward a weapon.
I reacted before thinking.
I grabbed his wrist.
“No gun.”
His eyes locked onto mine.
Nobody talked to Lorenzo Duca like that.
Nobody touched him.
But I did.
Because my daughter was standing right there.
“No gun,” I repeated quietly.
“Not near my daughter.”
For the first time, I saw something different in his expression.
Not anger.
Not pride.
Surprise.
Because someone had finally treated him like a human being.
Not like a king.
Not like a monster.
Just a wounded man.
His breathing became heavier.
I looked at the injury.
The blood.
The weakness.
I knew immediately.
He was losing too much.
“Mama,” Emma whispered.
I looked down.
She was touching Lorenzo's neck gently.
The same way I checked her temperature when she was sick.
“Mama…”
Her voice trembled.
“His heart is running.”
My eyes filled with tears.
Because she was right.
She didn’t know medical words.
She didn’t understand what was happening.
But she understood he was fading.
“I know, baby.”
“Can you catch it?”
That sentence almost broke me.
Because Emma truly believed hearts could be caught.
That anything broken could be fixed if you cared enough.
And maybe…
Maybe she was right.
A flashlight suddenly crossed the shed window.
The men were getting closer.
Lorenzo tried to stand.
He failed.
I grabbed him.
“You need to move.”
His eyes narrowed.
“You know who is chasing me?”
“No.”
“Then why are you helping me?”
I looked at Emma.
Because the answer was simple.
“Because my daughter already decided you were worth saving.”
For a second, Lorenzo said nothing.
Then something happened that I never expected.
The feared mafia boss looked at my daughter.
And his expression softened.
Just slightly.
Emma held out three tiny fingers.
“You can hold my hand.”
Lorenzo stared at her.
Then slowly…
He took her hand.
Above us, the shed door shook.
Someone was trying to open it.
“We know you're inside.”
The voice echoed.
Lorenzo looked toward the door.
I looked toward the floor.
And then I remembered something.
Months earlier, Emma had lost one of her buttons while playing near the old potting bench.
I had moved the bench searching for it.
And underneath the floorboards…
I had found something strange.
An iron ring.
A hidden door.
At the time, I thought it was just another forgotten part of the old mansion.
But now…
With armed men outside…
With Lorenzo Duca bleeding beside me…
I realized maybe that secret had been waiting for this exact moment.
I grabbed the wooden bench.
And moved it.
Lorenzo stared.
“What are you doing?”
I looked at him.
“Finding a way out.”
The floor beneath us opened.
And beneath the old gardening shed…
Was a staircase leading into darkness.
Lorenzo looked down.
His face changed.
Because whatever was underneath…
He recognized it.
“My father’s storm room…”
I turned toward him.
“You knew about this?”
His eyes remained fixed on the hidden passage.
“I knew it existed.”
A pause.
“But I never knew where.”
The door behind us shook again.
The armed men were seconds away.
I grabbed Lorenzo's arm.
Emma grabbed three of his fingers.
And together…
The three of us disappeared beneath the mansion.
Not knowing that below our feet…
May you like
Was a secret powerful enough to destroy an entire family.
