Chapter 4 - The Brother Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

For several seconds after the screen went black, nobody moved.

The hidden vault beneath the mansion became completely silent.

Not the peaceful silence of safety.

The kind of silence that came after a truth had shattered everything you believed.

Lorenzo stood in front of the dark monitor, staring at his own reflection.

A wounded man.

A betrayed man.

A man who had just discovered that the person connected to his destruction was not a stranger.

It was his own brother.

I watched his face carefully.

The Lorenzo Duca everyone feared was gone for a moment.

The cold expression.

The confidence.

The control.

Everything disappeared.

What remained was something much more human.

Pain.

“Your brother?” I whispered.

Lorenzo didn’t answer.

His hand slowly lowered from the monitor.

“My brother died twelve years ago.”

The words came quietly.

Almost like he was trying to convince himself.

Emma looked between us.

“People can come back.”

We both looked at her.

She hugged her stuffed rabbit.

“My bunny was lost for three days.”

She held it up.

“Then I found him.”

Normally, I might have smiled.

But this time, there was nothing funny about her innocent words.

Because sometimes children said things adults were too afraid to believe.

Lorenzo looked at her.

And somehow, that tiny voice gave him a moment to breathe.

“Emma,” I said softly.

“Yes, Mama?”

“Stay close to me.”

She nodded.

Immediately.

No questions.

No complaints.

That was what scared me most.

My daughter was only three years old.

She should have been sleeping in her bed.

She should have been dreaming about cartoons and toys.

She should not have been hiding in a secret room beneath a mansion with a wounded mafia boss while armed men hunted us.

But life had never asked permission before changing everything.

Lorenzo walked toward the monitor again.

The screen remained black.

“He died in a car accident.”

His voice was distant.

“I was twenty-six.”

I listened quietly.

Because I knew something important was coming.

People did not speak about their dead family members like this unless the memories still had power over them.

“My brother Adrian was different from me.”

Lorenzo touched the dusty screen.

“He believed people could be trusted.”

A bitter smile appeared.

“I thought that made him weak.”

He paused.

“But maybe he was the smart one.”

The room became colder.

“What happened?” I asked.

Lorenzo looked down.

“Adrian discovered things about my father’s business.”

The word business sounded strange.

Because everyone knew what kind of business the Duca family was involved in.

“He wanted to leave.”

Lorenzo’s voice lowered.

“He wanted to expose everything.”

My stomach tightened.

“And then he died.”

Lorenzo nodded.

“Or at least…”

He looked at the photograph in his hand.

“That’s what everyone told me.”

Before I could respond, one of the monitors suddenly flickered.

A different camera feed appeared.

The mansion hallway.

The woman from the recording was walking slowly through the corridor.

She looked calm.

Almost peaceful.

Like she wasn’t hunting someone.

Like she was simply waiting.

“She knows we’re here,” I said.

Lorenzo nodded.

“Yes.”

The woman stopped in front of a painting.

Then she looked directly toward the hidden camera.

Straight at us.

It felt impossible.

But somehow, it felt like she could see through the screen.

Then she spoke.

“Lorenzo.”

Her voice filled the room.

“You were always good at surviving.”

Nobody breathed.

“But you were never good at understanding people.”

Lorenzo stepped closer.

His expression hardened.

“You killed my brother.”

The woman smiled.

Not a shocked smile.

Not an angry one.

A confident one.

“That is what you believe.”

The screen went silent.

Then another image appeared.

A photograph.

Adrian.

Alive.

Older than the picture Lorenzo had seen before.

Standing beside the same woman.

Lorenzo froze.

My heart dropped.

Because the image proved one thing.

His brother had not died.

The woman continued.

“Your brother did not betray you.”

A pause.

“He betrayed the family.”

Lorenzo stared.

“You’re lying.”

“Am I?”

More photographs appeared.

Adrian entering buildings.

Meeting people.

Holding documents.

Then a final image.

Adrian standing beside someone else.

A man.

Older.

Powerful.

Someone I recognized from the mansion.

Lorenzo’s father.

“He discovered what your father was hiding,” the woman said.

“He tried to destroy the empire.”

The screen went dark again.

Lorenzo stepped back.

His breathing changed.

Everything he believed about his past was collapsing.

I looked at him.

“Is she telling the truth?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he whispered:

“I don’t know.”

That scared me more than anything.

Because Lorenzo Duca knew everything about everyone.

He was the man who controlled information.

The man who found secrets.

But now…

He was standing in a room full of secrets he never knew existed.

A small tug came from my hand.

I looked down.

Emma was looking at Lorenzo.

“Are you sad?”

The question was simple.

But Lorenzo looked like nobody had asked him that in years.

He slowly crouched down.

Pain crossed his face, but he ignored it.

“I’m confused.”

Emma thought about it.

Then she touched his arm.

“When I’m confused, Mama hugs me.”

I looked away.

Because something about that moment hurt.

This dangerous man.

This feared man.

Was learning comfort from a child.

Lorenzo looked at me.

For a second, neither of us spoke.

Then the vault lights suddenly turned red.

An alarm.

Someone had triggered the security system.

Lorenzo stood immediately.

“They’re coming.”

“How many?”

He checked one of the monitors.

“Too many.”

The hallway camera showed armed men moving through the mansion.

Searching.

The woman was walking behind them.

Slowly.

Confidently.

“She wants us to run,” Lorenzo said.

“Why?”

“Because she knows where every exit leads.”

I looked around the room.

The hidden vault.

The documents.

The evidence.

Everything we had discovered.

“We can’t leave this behind.”

Lorenzo looked at the shelves.

“No.”

His eyes hardened.

“We take everything.”

He began grabbing files.

Photographs.

Recordings.

Anything that could expose the truth.

I helped him.

Even though part of me was terrified.

Because the moment we took those things…

We were no longer just witnesses.

We became targets.

Emma picked up one small photograph from the floor.

She looked at it carefully.

Then handed it to Lorenzo.

He looked down.

And froze.

It was a picture of Adrian.

But not alone.

Standing beside him was a little girl.

A child.

A girl around Emma’s age.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten note.

Lorenzo turned it over.

His face changed.

“What?”

I asked.

He didn’t answer.

He read the words again.

Then again.

Finally, he whispered:

“Adrian had a daughter.”

The room went silent.

I looked at the photograph.

A child.

Another innocent child connected to this dangerous family.

Another secret hidden away.

Another life stolen by lies.

Then the monitor turned on again.

The woman appeared one final time.

But this time…

She wasn’t smiling.

She looked worried.

For the first time.

And that meant something.

Because dangerous people only looked afraid when something more dangerous was coming.

Her voice came through.

“Lorenzo.”

A pause.

“You need to understand.”

Her expression changed.

“The person who ordered your death…”

She looked directly into the camera.

“Was not me.”

Lorenzo stared.

“What?”

The woman continued.

“The person who wanted you gone…”

A long silence.

“Was the same person who killed Adrian.”

Nobody moved.

Because suddenly…

The truth became much bigger.

This was not about taking over an empire.

This was not just about betrayal.

Someone had been destroying the Duca family from inside for years.

And that person was still out there.

The alarm grew louder.

Footsteps approached.

Closer.

Closer.

Lorenzo looked at me.

Then at Emma.

Then at the evidence in his hands.

For the first time that night, he made a decision.

Not as a mafia boss.

Not as a powerful man.

As someone who finally wanted the truth.

“We find who did this.”

I nodded.

“And then?”

His eyes hardened.

“Then they answer for everything.”

Emma grabbed both our hands.

Mine.

And Lorenzo’s.

Like she was reminding us we were not alone.

And beneath the mansion where an entire family had buried its secrets…

Three people walked toward the darkness together.

A mother.

A child.

May you like

And a man who had just discovered that the greatest enemy he ever faced…

had been hiding in his own bloodline.
