Chapter 5 - The Child Hidden By The Truth

The first thing Lorenzo did after leaving the hidden vault was look back.
Not at the mansion.
Not at the guards searching the halls.
Not at the enemy waiting somewhere inside his own family.
He looked at Emma.
A three-year-old girl holding a stuffed rabbit with one hand and holding onto his fingers with the other.
The same girl who had placed a cartoon bandage on the face of a dying man without knowing his name.
The same girl who had walked into a world of violence and somehow brought kindness into it.
For a moment, Lorenzo looked completely lost.
Because he had spent his entire life understanding enemies.
He knew how to fight powerful men.
He knew how to survive betrayal.
He knew how to recognize danger.
But he had never learned what to do when someone showed him unconditional kindness.
Especially from someone who had nothing to gain.
I noticed him staring.
“She’s tired.”
His eyes moved toward me.
“What?”
“Emma.”
I adjusted her coat around her shoulders.
“She’s been awake all night.”
Lorenzo looked at the little girl.
The anger in his face softened.
“She shouldn’t have been involved in this.”
I nodded.
“She shouldn’t have.”
The words were heavier than I expected.
Because they were true.
My daughter should have been far away from all of this.
But life had already pulled her into it.
Lorenzo looked toward the dark mansion hallway.
“Once we get out, I’ll make sure she’s safe.”
I looked at him carefully.
“You promise?”
His eyes met mine.
And for the first time, I saw something different.
Not the promise of a powerful man.
The promise of someone who had almost lost everything.
“Yes.”
His answer was immediate.
“I promise.”
Before I could say anything else, a noise came from the end of the hallway.
Footsteps.
Several people.
Coming closer.
Lorenzo immediately changed.
The softness disappeared.
The instincts returned.
He moved Emma behind him.
But Emma stepped around him.
“No.”
Both of us looked down.
She frowned.
“He’s hurt.”
She pointed at Lorenzo.
“You stand behind Mama.”
For a second, I almost forgot how dangerous the situation was.
Because somehow…
My three-year-old daughter was giving orders to a mafia boss.
And somehow…
He listened.
Lorenzo actually stepped back.
Just slightly.
I saw the smallest smile appear on his face.
“She’s brave.”
I whispered:
“She gets that from me.”
“No.”
He looked at Emma.
“She gets it from herself.”
The footsteps became louder.
Then a voice called out.
“Lorenzo.”
We froze.
Not the woman.
A man.
A familiar voice.
Lorenzo’s expression changed.
“Marco.”
I remembered the name.
The person who had told the guards Lorenzo escaped through the garden.
The person who had sent people searching.
His trusted man.
Or at least…
Someone Lorenzo used to trust.
A tall man appeared at the end of the hallway.
Marco looked calm.
Too calm.
He wasn’t holding a weapon.
He wasn’t acting like an enemy.
That almost made him more dangerous.
“Boss.”
The word sounded wrong.
Because there was no respect behind it.
Only calculation.
Lorenzo stared.
“You knew.”
Marco didn’t answer.
“You knew about the room.”
Still nothing.
“You knew about my brother.”
The silence said everything.
My heart tightened.
Because sometimes the truth didn’t arrive through words.
Sometimes it arrived through someone’s refusal to deny it.
Marco sighed.
“You were never supposed to find that room.”
Lorenzo stepped forward.
“You knew it existed.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Marco looked around.
At the mansion walls.
At the family portraits.
At the place where generations of secrets had been protected.
“Because your father trusted me.”
Lorenzo’s jaw tightened.
“My father?”
Marco nodded.
“He knew you were too emotional.”
That sentence changed something.
Lorenzo became completely still.
“Emotional?”
Marco smiled faintly.
“You cared too much.”
The hallway became colder.
“You cared about loyalty. Family. Honor.”
He looked at Lorenzo.
“Your father knew those things would make you weak.”
I felt anger rise inside me.
Because I understood something.
People like Marco didn’t destroy others because they were stronger.
They destroyed others because they convinced themselves kindness was weakness.
Lorenzo’s voice became quiet.
“What happened to Adrian?”
Marco looked away.
And that was enough.
“Tell me.”
The command echoed.
Marco finally looked back.
“Your brother found the truth.”
“What truth?”
“That your father’s empire wasn’t built the way you thought.”
Lorenzo stared.
Marco continued.
“He discovered hidden accounts. Illegal agreements. People inside the family stealing from each other.”
A pause.
“And when Adrian tried to expose it…”
He stopped.
Lorenzo’s voice dropped.
“What?”
Marco looked at him.
“Someone made sure he disappeared.”
Emma tightened her grip on my hand.
She didn’t understand everything.
But she understood sadness.
Lorenzo looked like the world had become heavier.
“Who?”
Marco didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked toward Emma.
And his expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Not anger.
Not suspicion.
Fear.
“What?” Lorenzo noticed.
Marco looked away.
“Nothing.”
“No.”
Lorenzo stepped closer.
“You saw something.”
Marco remained silent.
I pulled Emma closer.
Because suddenly, I realized something.
Everyone in this family knew secrets.
Everyone knew something they weren’t saying.
But why was Marco afraid of a child?
Then Emma spoke.
“She has the same eyes.”
Everyone froze.
I looked down.
“Who, baby?”
Emma pointed at the photograph Lorenzo was holding.
The picture of Adrian’s daughter.
“The girl.”
Lorenzo looked at the photograph.
Then at Emma.
“What did you say?”
Emma touched the picture.
“Her eyes look like mine.”
A strange silence filled the hallway.
I looked closer.
The child in the photograph.
The little girl standing beside Adrian.
The daughter nobody knew existed.
There was something familiar.
Not the face.
Not the hair.
Something else.
A feeling.
Lorenzo slowly took the photograph.
On the back, there was a name.
A handwritten name.
His hands shook as he read it.
“Isabella.”
Marco’s face went pale.
Lorenzo noticed.
“You know her.”
Marco didn’t answer.
“Where is she?”
Silence.
Then Marco whispered:
“She’s alive.”
Everything stopped.
Lorenzo stared.
His brother’s daughter.
A child hidden for twelve years.
Another innocent person trapped in the Duca family’s secrets.
“Where?”
Marco looked toward the mansion.
“Not here.”
“Then where?”
Marco hesitated.
And that hesitation told us everything.
He was afraid.
“She was taken away.”
“By who?”
Marco looked at Lorenzo.
And his answer changed everything.
“By the same person who ordered tonight’s attack.”
Lorenzo’s face hardened.
“The woman?”
Marco shook his head.
“No.”
A pause.
“The woman is only a piece.”
The hallway went silent.
“There is someone above her.”
Someone controlling everything.
Someone who had manipulated the family for years.
Someone who had hidden Adrian.
Someone who had ordered Lorenzo’s death.
Lorenzo stepped forward.
“Who?”
Marco looked directly at him.
“The person who has been running this family from the shadows.”
Before he could say the name, the mansion lights suddenly went out.
Complete darkness.
Then a gunshot echoed.
Emma screamed.
I grabbed her.
Lorenzo moved instantly.
The sound of another shot followed.
Then silence.
When the emergency lights returned…
Marco was gone.
But on the floor beside him was something new.
An envelope.
Lorenzo picked it up slowly.
His name was written on the front.
Only one sentence was visible.
"If you want the truth about Adrian and Isabella, come alone."
Lorenzo stared at the message.
I already knew what he was thinking.
He wanted to go.
Alone.
Because that was what men like him did.
They carried their pain alone.
They fought alone.
They sacrificed themselves alone.
But before he could speak…
Emma grabbed his hand.
“Don’t go alone.”
Lorenzo looked down.
She looked up at him.
“You promised.”
A small child.
A tiny voice.
But powerful enough to stop him.
Because she was right.
He had promised.
Not as a mafia boss.
Not as a powerful man.
As someone who finally had people worth protecting.
Lorenzo looked at me.
Then at Emma.
And slowly folded the letter.
“We find Isabella.”
I nodded.
“And we find who did this.”
Outside, the storm continued.
Inside the Duca mansion, the war had only begun.
Because the enemy was no longer hiding.
They wanted Lorenzo to chase the truth.
They wanted him angry.
They wanted him alone.
But they had made one mistake.
May you like
They underestimated the little girl who saved his life.
And they underestimated the woman who refused to let him fight alone.
