THE FUNERAL THEY HELD FOR ME / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6 - My Grandfather Was Supposed to Be Dead

Claire could not move.

For eighteen months, she had visited a grave with Thomas Mercer's name on it.

She had brought flowers on his birthday.

She had cried at Christmas because his chair was empty.

Now he stood ten feet away.

Alive.

"Grandpa?"

Thomas opened his arms.

Claire crossed the room.

Pain shot through her ribs, but she ignored it.

She hugged him.

Thomas held her carefully.

"My girl."

Claire cried against his shoulder.

Then anger followed.

She pulled away.

"You let me bury you."

"I know."

"You let me think you were dead."

"I know."

"Why?"

"Because the people trying to steal from our family needed to believe I couldn't testify."

Gabriel closed the cabinet.

"We need the full story."

Thomas looked at him.

"And you are?"

"Gabriel Rourke."

Thomas studied the tattoos.

"I knew your father."

Gabriel's face changed.

"That isn't necessarily a compliment."

Thomas almost smiled.

"No. It isn't."

Claire stared between them.

"Later. Explain now."

They sat around the kitchen table.

Thomas began five years earlier.

Mercer Medical Logistics had won enormous government transportation contracts.

Those contracts attracted partners.

Banks.

Security companies.

Consultants.

One of them was Northbridge Risk.

At first legitimate.

Then money began disappearing.

Thomas investigated.

Millions had been moved through shell corporations.

Henry Cole found the first transfers.

Thomas found something worse.

Northbridge wasn't simply stealing money.

It was using Mercer shipments to move illegal goods.

Michael learned about the scheme after marrying Claire.

"Did he join them?" Claire asked.

"Eventually."

Thomas looked ashamed.

"I underestimated him."

"Who recruited him?"

Thomas hesitated.

"Your uncle Robert."

Claire felt another blow.

"Uncle Robert?"

"Yes."

Her father's younger brother.

The uncle who brought her birthday gifts.

Who walked her down the aisle after her father died.

Who had supposedly challenged Michael after Claire vanished.

"He was pretending?"

"Robert has been taking money for years."

Claire covered her mouth.

"What about Mom?"

"She didn't know."

Claire exhaled.

"Then why did your letter say she knows more than she remembers?"

Thomas looked toward the window.

"Because she saw something fifteen years ago."

"What?"

"The night your father died."

Claire froze.

Her father had died in a car crash.

At least that was what she'd been told.

Thomas continued.

"Diane remembers an accident. But she also remembers Robert arriving at the house before police called."

Claire looked sick.

"You're saying Uncle Robert knew Dad was dead."

"Before he should have."

The conspiracy had started long before Michael.

Michael was simply ambitious enough to join it.

"Why fake your death?"

Thomas explained.

Dr. Paul Harlan had been falsifying medical reports.

Thomas discovered it.

Before he could go to authorities, Harlan warned him that Claire was vulnerable.

So Thomas disappeared.

Henry helped.

Vanessa protected the trust.

But someone replaced documents anyway.

"Who?"

"Robert."

Claire stared at the table.

"Michael tried to kill me for money."

"Yes."

"But Robert needed me dead too."

"Yes."

"For control of Mercer Logistics?"

"And to erase the last beneficiary who could challenge the forged documents."

Gabriel asked, "Why is Henry hiding?"

"He was collecting proof."

"Where?"

Thomas shook his head.

"I don't know."

Claire thought of Room 417.

"Maybe we do."

They told Thomas about Ethan's bracelet and the hotel receipt.

Thomas stood.

"Then Henry may have arranged it."

"Arranged what?"

"A meeting."

"With who?"

Thomas looked at Claire.

"Me."

Room 417 belonged to Northbridge.

But the number scratched into Ethan's bracelet could have been planted deliberately.

A clue.

They drove back before dawn.

Claire slept in the car for forty minutes.

When she woke, Gabriel was watching the road.

"How do you know my grandfather?"

"My father moved equipment for Mercer years ago."

"Legal equipment?"

"Mostly."

"Mostly?"

Gabriel looked at her.

"You ask dangerous questions."

"You answer selectively."

"Occupational habit."

Claire smiled faintly.

Then she became serious.

"Did your father work with Northbridge?"

Gabriel's hands tightened around the steering wheel.

"Yes."

Claire waited.

"He discovered what they were doing before he died."

"How did he die?"

Gabriel's expression closed.

"Car accident."

Claire's blood ran cold.

Just like her father.

Gabriel looked at her.

They both understood.

The story had suddenly become shared.

At the city, federal agents secured the hotel.

Room 417 appeared empty.

No luggage.

No guest.

But beneath the mattress they found a flash drive.

On it were payment ledgers.

Northbridge.

Robert Mercer.

Michael Carter.

Dr. Harlan.

Ethan Voss.

And dozens of names.

One name made Gabriel stop.

Victor Rourke.

His father.

Claire looked at him.

"I'm sorry."

Gabriel said nothing.

Then Agent Grant pointed to another column.

The payment beside Victor's name wasn't incoming.

It was outgoing.

Victor had paid someone.

A private investigator.

Three days before his death.

Gabriel whispered, "He was investigating them."

Exactly as Thomas had said.

Then they opened the investigator's final report.

Photographs appeared.

Northbridge trucks.

Mercer warehouses.

Robert.

Michael.

And a photograph taken fifteen years earlier.

Claire's father stood beside Victor Rourke.

Alive.

Meeting secretly.

"They knew each other," Claire whispered.

Gabriel stared.

Their fathers had been investigating the same network.

Both later died in car crashes.

This was no longer about fifty million dollars.

It was about fifteen years of buried murders.

Then Agent Grant found one final file.

VIDEO_15A.

She clicked.

Claire's father appeared on screen.

He looked directly into the camera.

"If anything happens to me or Victor, Robert Mercer is involved."

Claire covered her mouth.

Her father continued.

"But Robert answers to someone else."

Static distorted the recording.

Then he said a name.

The audio cut out.

Grant replayed it.

Again.

Nothing.

Gabriel leaned closer.

"There has to be another copy."

A knock sounded at the hotel door.

Everyone froze.

Federal agents raised weapons.

Grant opened it carefully.

No one stood outside.

Only a package.

Inside was an old cassette recorder.

And a note written in Henry Cole's handwriting.

YOU'VE FOUND WHAT YOUR FATHERS KNEW.

NOW LISTEN TO WHAT GOT THEM KILLED.

Claire pressed play.

Her father's voice filled the room.

"The person controlling Northbridge is..."

The tape clicked.

Then a woman's voice replaced his.

Claire's mother.

And Diane Mercer said:

"Robert, you promised Claire would never find out what I did."
