Chapter 10 - The Night My Father Died

Diane finally told the truth.
Fifteen years earlier, Claire's father Daniel had discovered the Northbridge scheme.
He planned to take Claire and Diane away.
But Diane believed Robert when he said Daniel was stealing money and abandoning the family.
That night Diane confronted Daniel in the car.
They argued.
She grabbed the evidence folder.
Daniel reached for it.
The car swerved.
But Diane had not been driving.
Daniel had.
They recovered.
No crash.
No injury.
Daniel left Diane at home and drove away alone.
Hours later, police reported his fatal accident.
"So Robert lied," Claire said.
Diane nodded through tears.
"He wanted me to believe our argument caused it."
"For fifteen years."
"I thought I distracted him. I thought he crashed because he was upset."
Claire hugged her mother.
The guilt had never belonged to Diane.
Robert had simply weaponized it.
Agent Grant traced Robert's call to the private airfield.
They arrived too late.
His plane was gone.
But flight control had no departure record.
Gabriel studied the runway.
"He didn't fly."
A hangar door stood open.
Inside was Robert's aircraft.
Empty.
Another staged disappearance.
Claire almost admired the repetition.
They searched Robert's home.
Hidden behind a basement wall was a communications room.
Screens.
Phones.
False passports.
One screen displayed live video.
Henry Cole sat tied to a chair.
Claire leaned closer.
"Where is he?"
Grant studied the image.
Industrial setting.
Concrete wall.
Metal piping.
Thomas recognized it.
"Mercer Plant Three."
An abandoned distribution facility.
Agents surrounded the plant.
Claire was ordered to stay away.
For once she agreed.
Not because she was afraid.
Because her daughter had nearly arrived the previous night.
Gabriel went with Grant.
Claire remained in a secure command vehicle.
Body-camera footage streamed to the monitor.
Agents entered.
Empty corridors.
Then voices.
Gabriel moved toward them.
Henry sat in the center of a warehouse.
Alive.
Across from him stood Ethan Voss.
Gun in hand.
"Back!" Ethan shouted.
Agents aimed.
Gabriel kept his voice calm.
"It's over."
Ethan laughed.
"You think Arthur cares if I die?"
"No."
For the first time Ethan looked uncertain.
Gabriel continued.
"That's the problem."
Henry spoke.
"He's right, Ethan."
Ethan pointed the gun at him.
"Shut up."
"You were useful. Now you're evidence."
The truth landed.
Ethan slowly lowered the weapon.
Then a shot came from above.
Ethan collapsed.
Sniper.
Chaos.
Gabriel dragged Henry behind cover.
Agents fired toward the catwalk.
A figure ran.
Robert.
He escaped through the loading bay before the perimeter closed.
But Henry was alive.
At the hospital, Henry explained the last pieces.
Arthur kept the full criminal ledger on an encrypted server.
Henry had the only key.
He never gave it up.
"Where's the server?"
Henry looked at Thomas.
"The old Mercer headquarters."
That building had been converted into luxury offices years earlier.
Arthur had hidden the heart of his operation inside the company he'd been stealing from.
They accessed the server room at dawn.
Henry entered the key.
Files opened.
Bribes.
Murders.
Smuggling.
Political corruption.
Every payment.
Every order.
Every name.
Including the contract on Claire.
SIGNED: ARTHUR KANE.
Robert's authorization appeared beneath it.
Michael's beneath that.
The evidence was enough.
Federal warrants expanded nationwide.
Northbridge offices were raided.
Accounts frozen.
Executives arrested.
For the first time, Arthur Kane's empire began collapsing.
Then Michael disappeared from federal custody.
Not escaped.
Taken.
A transport vehicle had been hit.
Two guards injured.
Michael gone.
Claire received a call minutes later.
Arthur.
His voice was older than she expected.
"You've caused me considerable trouble."
Claire remained calm.
"You tried to murder me."
"I delegated."
The casualness chilled her.
"Where is Michael?"
"With his father."
"You don't deserve that word."
Arthur laughed.
"He would disagree."
"No. He spent his whole life trying to earn approval from a dead man."
Silence.
Claire had hit something.
Arthur said, "Bring Henry's encryption key."
"No."
"Then your husband dies."
Claire looked at Gabriel.
Michael had tried to kill her.
He had signed documents that led to Sophie's death.
He deserved prison.
But she would not become Arthur.
"I'll bring it."
Gabriel shook his head.
Claire covered the phone.
"Not the real key."
He understood.
Arthur gave coordinates.
An old quarry.
Grant prepared a tactical team.
Claire insisted on participating remotely.
They created a duplicate drive.
Corrupted.
Useless.
At the quarry, Gabriel carried it.
Claire watched through his body camera.
Arthur stood beside Michael.
Robert beside him.
Michael's face was bruised.
Arthur held a gun.
"Where's Claire?"
"Safe," Gabriel said.
Arthur smiled.
"For now."
Gabriel tossed the drive.
Robert picked it up.
A laptop verified the files.
Fake confirmation.
Arthur relaxed.
Federal agents moved closer unseen.
Then Michael looked directly toward Gabriel's camera.
As though he knew Claire was watching.
"I'm sorry," he said.
Arthur turned.
"For what?"
Michael lunged.
Gunshot.
Claire screamed.
The video spun.
Agents rushed.
More shots.
Then static.
"Gabriel?"
Nothing.
"Gabriel!"
The feed returned.
Gabriel was alive.
Robert had been arrested.
Michael lay on the ground bleeding from the shoulder.
Arthur was gone.
Claire stared at the screen.
"Where did he go?"
Grant's voice came through.
"We're searching."
Then Claire felt warmth spread down her legs.
Dr. Shaw looked at her.
Claire looked back.
Her water had broken.
May you like
Three weeks early.
And somewhere outside the quarry, Arthur Kane was still free.
