THE FUNERAL THEY HELD FOR ME / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4 - The Dead Woman With My Name

Gabriel left immediately.

Claire demanded to go.

He refused.

She threatened to follow anyway.

He won the argument only because Dr. Shaw threatened to sedate her if she tried to leave.

"You wouldn't."

Dr. Shaw raised an eyebrow.

"Test me."

Claire remained at the lodge.

Gabriel reached the chapel twenty-eight minutes later.

The main entrance was locked.

He went through a service door Noah had left unsecured.

Inside, rows of empty chairs faced a polished walnut coffin.

Flowers surrounded Claire Carter's photograph.

The sight stopped Gabriel for half a second.

A living woman's funeral.

Prepared with professional precision.

No Noah.

He moved down the aisle.

A dark smear marked the floor near the coffin.

Blood.

Gabriel followed it behind a curtain.

Noah sat against the wall holding a towel to his head.

"You're late."

Gabriel exhaled.

"You idiot."

"Nice to see you too."

"Who hit you?"

"Didn't get a look."

"Body?"

"Still there."

Gabriel helped Noah stand.

Then they approached the coffin.

Noah lifted the lid.

The woman inside appeared close to Claire's age.

Pregnant.

Blonde.

Similar height.

But not Claire.

A deep injury obscured part of her face.

Gabriel looked away briefly.

"Identification?"

"No documents."

"Anything?"

Noah pointed toward the woman's hand.

A wedding ring.

Claire's ring.

Gabriel felt anger rise.

Michael had built the scene carefully.

Jewelry.

Body type.

Pregnancy.

A closed coffin after a supposed mountain fall.

Enough grief and urgency to discourage questions.

"Cause of death?"

"I'm not a medical examiner."

"Guess."

Noah studied the woman.

"She didn't die falling from a mountain."

Gabriel looked at him.

"Why?"

"No fractures you'd expect."

"Then what?"

Noah indicated a tiny mark near the woman's arm.

"Injection."

Gabriel's expression darkened.

They photographed everything.

Then Gabriel noticed something under the woman's fingers.

Paper.

He gently removed it.

A torn receipt.

Room 417.

He looked at Noah.

"The bracelet."

"Ethan Voss."

Gabriel nodded.

Four-one-seven wasn't random.

It was a room number.

Back at the lodge, Claire examined the photograph of the receipt.

"Hotel?"

"Probably."

"Which one?"

"Logo is torn."

Noah was already searching.

At 7:15, he found a match.

The Hawthorne Grand.

Downtown.

Luxury hotel.

Room 417 had been booked three nights earlier under a false name.

Payment came from a Northbridge corporate card.

Claire felt the pieces narrowing around Michael.

"Who was the dead woman?"

Gabriel hesitated.

"We're working on it."

"You know."

"Claire."

"Tell me."

He handed her another image.

A missing-person bulletin.

Sophie Lane.

Twenty-nine.

Six months pregnant.

Last seen two days earlier leaving a women's shelter.

Claire stared at the photograph until tears blurred it.

Michael had needed her dead.

Someone else had died in her place.

"This is because of me."

"No," Gabriel said.

She looked up.

"This is because of the person who killed Sophie."

"I was the target."

"That doesn't make you responsible."

Claire looked again at Sophie's smiling face.

She had to remember it.

Not "the body."

Not "the substitute."

Sophie.

A person.

A mother.

A baby.

Michael had turned two lives into props.

Claire's grief hardened into something new.

Not revenge.

Purpose.

"What happens if I appear at the funeral?"

Gabriel said, "Michael panics."

"Good."

"He may also run."

"Then we don't let him."

"Claire."

"Everyone he needs is going to be in one room."

Gabriel studied her.

"Your mother too."

"Exactly."

"Vanessa?"

"Probably."

"Ethan?"

"Maybe."

Claire looked at the clock.

Funeral in ninety minutes.

"I want Michael to think he succeeded until the last possible second."

Gabriel understood what she was proposing.

"You want to walk into your own funeral."

"Yes."

"Terrible idea."

"I know."

"Which is why you're smiling?"

"I'm not smiling."

"You almost are."

Claire looked toward the window.

"If he sees me unexpectedly, we'll learn more from his face in five seconds than we could from five days of interviews."

Gabriel considered it.

Then shook his head.

"No."

Claire folded her arms.

"Your argument?"

"Someone tried to kill you yesterday."

"Someone failed."

"They may try again."

"Then stand beside me."

Gabriel stared at her.

She had said it simply.

Not flirtation.

Not dependence.

A tactical statement.

Yet something shifted between them.

"I will," he said.

They made the plan.

Claire would remain hidden until the service began.

Gabriel's people would secure exits.

Noah would watch Ethan Voss if he appeared.

Dr. Shaw would remain nearby in case Claire's condition changed.

Most importantly, they would alert a federal investigator Gabriel trusted—but only once Claire appeared.

Why federal?

Because Michael's financial transactions crossed state lines.

Because the trust involved shell companies.

Because Northbridge operated nationally.

And because Gabriel did not know which local officials Michael might have bought.

At 8:37, Claire dressed.

Not in funeral black.

In simple dark blue.

Dr. Shaw hated the entire idea.

"Twenty minutes. Then you leave."

Claire nodded.

Gabriel looked at her.

"She's serious."

"So am I."

The chapel filled.

Claire watched through a private security feed from a van two blocks away.

Her mother sat in the front row.

Michael sat beside her.

Vanessa stood near the aisle.

She looked tense.

Not grieving.

Ethan Voss appeared near the rear entrance.

Gabriel touched his earpiece.

"He's there."

Claire's pulse accelerated.

Then someone else entered.

An elderly man with a cane.

Claire leaned toward the screen.

"Who is that?"

Gabriel looked.

"You know him?"

Claire couldn't speak for several seconds.

"That's impossible."

"Claire?"

She pointed.

"That's my grandfather's accountant."

"So?"

"He died last year."

Gabriel stared at her.

"You're sure?"

"I went to his funeral."

The man took a seat directly behind Michael.

Claire's mind raced.

Either she was mistaken—

or someone else had been declared dead.

The minister began.

"We gather today to remember Claire Mercer Carter..."

Claire closed her eyes.

Hearing those words was stranger than she had imagined.

Gabriel sat beside her.

"You can stop."

"No."

Inside the chapel, Michael stood.

He approached the podium.

"My wife was extraordinary."

Claire whispered, "You don't get to say that."

Michael continued.

"Claire cared deeply about family."

Her mother cried.

Michael lowered his eyes with perfect grief.

"I would trade everything to have her back."

Claire reached for the van door.

Gabriel caught her wrist gently.

"Wait."

On the screen, Vanessa suddenly stood.

She moved quickly toward Michael.

Whispered something.

His expression changed.

Tiny.

Almost invisible.

But Claire saw it.

Fear.

Michael looked toward the rear doors.

Then toward Ethan.

Gabriel frowned.

"They know something."

Claire looked at him.

"About me?"

"Maybe."

Inside the chapel, Ethan received a phone call.

His face hardened.

He walked out.

Noah followed.

Gabriel touched his radio.

"Stay on him."

Claire opened the van door.

"Now."

Gabriel didn't stop her this time.

They crossed the street.

Every step hurt Claire's ribs.

Her baby moved.

She whispered, "Just a few more minutes."

At the chapel entrance, Gabriel's security team moved into position.

Claire stood behind the closed doors.

Inside, Michael reached the end of his speech.

"Wherever Claire is now, I hope she knows how deeply she was loved."

Claire pushed the doors open.

The room went silent.

Michael turned.

The color disappeared from his face.

Claire walked slowly down the aisle.

Her mother's mouth opened.

Vanessa dropped the papers in her hand.

The minister backed away from the podium.

Claire stopped twenty feet from Michael.

"Hello, Michael."

Someone screamed.

Her mother stood.

"Claire?"

Michael took one step backward.

Then another.

Claire watched his face.

Shock.

Fear.

Calculation.

But not grief.

Never grief.

"You're..."

He couldn't finish.

"Alive?"

Claire supplied.

The entire room erupted.

Reporters outside heard the disturbance.

Cameras began pushing toward the doors.

Gabriel moved beside Claire.

Michael stared at him.

Then something strange happened.

Instead of looking at Claire again, Michael looked toward Vanessa.

And said:

"You told me she was dead."

Vanessa's face went white.

Claire turned toward her.

Vanessa whispered, "I never told you that."

Michael realized too late what he'd just admitted.

Then a gunshot exploded from somewhere behind the chapel.

Everyone dropped.

Gabriel threw himself over Claire.

People screamed.

A second shot hit the wooden doors.

Noah's voice came through Gabriel's earpiece.

"Gabriel, Ethan's gone."

Gabriel looked toward the rear corridor.

A door was swinging slowly shut.

Claire saw someone disappear through it.

Not Ethan.

The elderly accountant she had buried a year ago.

May you like

And before the door closed, he looked directly at Claire and mouthed two words:

YOUR GRANDFATHER.
