THE FUNERAL THEY HELD FOR ME / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14 - The Child They Could Not Erase

The revelation forced investigators back to the beginning.

The woman in Claire's coffin had been Sophie.

But Sophie had not been pregnant when she died.

The appearance of pregnancy had been staged beneath her funeral clothing.

Why?

Because Sophie had given birth secretly three weeks earlier.

Ethan Voss was the father.

Arthur discovered the pregnancy and viewed the child as leverage against Ethan.

Eleanor had helped Sophie hide the baby.

That was the part of her story she'd concealed.

Not because she was innocent.

But because admitting it would expose the child.

"Where is he?" Claire asked.

"Safe."

"Where?"

"With Sophie's sister."

Federal agents verified it.

A healthy baby boy named Samuel had been living under protected identity with Maria's younger daughter.

Sophie had died trying to keep her child away from Arthur.

Claire's foundation arranged permanent legal protection for Samuel.

Ethan learned his son was alive while in federal custody.

He broke down.

His cooperation became complete.

He gave investigators the final details of Sophie's murder.

Arthur had ordered Sophie abducted after learning Ethan planned to testify.

Michael's staged funeral created a convenient opportunity to hide her death.

Sophie was murdered.

Her body altered.

Claire's jewelry added.

Her identity erased.

Except it wasn't.

Because people kept saying her name.

Claire stood beside Maria when Sophie's real funeral was held.

No closed coffin built on lies.

No false identity.

No pretending.

Maria spoke about her daughter.

Funny.

Stubborn.

A terrible cook.

A wonderful sister.

A mother who protected her baby until the end.

Claire cried.

Gabriel held her hand.

Afterward Maria placed a flower against Sophie's grave.

"Now she's home."

Claire thought about those words for weeks.

Home.

Not a house.

Not money.

Not a family name.

A place where nobody needed you to disappear.

Two years passed.

Then three.

Claire no longer woke every night from the mountain dream.

Sometimes it returned.

But now the dream changed.

She still fell.

Still hit the snow.

Then she heard helicopter blades.

And she knew what came next.

Lily grew into a fearless little girl with Claire's eyes and Gabriel's stubbornness despite sharing none of his blood.

She called him Gabe at first.

Then one afternoon at preschool she introduced him to another child.

"That's my dad Gabriel."

Gabriel stopped walking.

Claire saw his face.

Lily kept running toward the swings, unaware she'd changed his world.

That evening Gabriel sat on Claire's porch.

"Did you hear what she called me?"

"Yes."

"I didn't teach her that."

"I know."

"Did you?"

"No."

He stared toward the yard.

Claire sat beside him.

"How do you feel?"

"Terrified."

She smiled.

"Good."

"Why good?"

"Because the dangerous men in my life were never scared of responsibility."

Gabriel looked at her.

"That's annoyingly profound."

"Thank you."

"No, it wasn't a compliment."

She leaned against him.

He kissed her forehead.

A month later Gabriel took Claire to the mountain.

She immediately became suspicious.

"If this is a proposal, your timing needs work."

Gabriel stopped.

"That ruined several minutes of planning."

Claire laughed.

He reached into his jacket.

"Fine."

He held out a ring.

Simple.

Elegant.

Nothing like the one Michael had given her.

"I don't want to rescue you."

Claire's smile softened.

"I know."

"I don't want you to need me."

"I know."

"I just want to keep choosing you."

Claire's eyes filled.

Gabriel continued.

"And Lily, if she'll have me."

Claire laughed through tears.

"She decided that before you did."

"Probably."

He knelt.

"Claire Mercer, will you marry me?"

She looked at the mountains.

At the place where one life ended.

At the place where another began.

"Yes."

Gabriel exhaled.

"That was stressful."

"You've faced armed criminals."

"Again, clearer rules."

She kissed him.

They planned a small wedding.

Diane wanted flowers.

Thomas wanted too many guests.

Noah wanted an open bar.

Vanessa wanted everyone to sign a prenup.

Claire agreed with Vanessa.

Gabriel pretended to be offended.

Then, one week before the wedding, Claire received a certified package from prison.

Michael.

Inside was no letter.

Only a document.

A voluntary termination of parental claims regarding Lily.

Already signed.

Witnessed.

Irrevocable where permitted after final court review.

Claire stared at it.

Michael had finally done one thing for Lily without asking for anything in return.

He removed himself.

She didn't forgive him.

But she accepted the act for what it was.

A door closing.

The morning of the wedding, Claire dressed beside her mother.

Diane fastened Daniel's watch around Claire's wrist.

"Your father would be proud."

Claire looked in the mirror.

"I hope so."

Thomas waited outside to walk her down the aisle.

Lily wore a small cream dress and carried flowers.

Gabriel stood beneath an arbor near the lake.

No tattoos covered.

No attempt to look like anyone other than himself.

Claire started toward him.

Then Thomas stopped.

His face changed.

Claire followed his gaze.

A black SUV had stopped near the property entrance.

Gabriel saw it too.

Noah immediately moved.

Security approached.

The rear door opened.

A man stepped out.

Older.

Thin.

Wearing prison transport clothing beneath a federal jacket.

Claire's heart stopped.

Michael.

She turned toward Agent Grant.

"What is he doing here?"

Grant looked equally confused.

Then another agent handed her paperwork.

Michael had been transported for emergency testimony in a connected case.

The vehicle had suffered a mechanical failure outside the estate.

Pure coincidence.

Michael saw Claire in her wedding dress.

He stopped.

For several seconds nobody spoke.

Claire stared at the man who once tried to make her funeral the beginning of his fortune.

Now he stood outside the life he could no longer touch.

Michael lowered his eyes.

Then looked at Gabriel.

He gave one small nod.

Gabriel returned it.

No forgiveness.

No friendship.

Simply recognition.

The agents guided Michael back toward another vehicle.

But before he entered, he looked at Claire once more.

"I hope you're happy."

Claire held his gaze.

"I am."

Michael nodded.

The door closed.

The vehicle drove away.

Claire turned toward Gabriel.

Thomas smiled.

"Ready?"

Claire looked at Lily waiting near the aisle.

At her mother.

At her grandfather.

At Gabriel.

"Ready."

She took one step.

Then Noah's phone rang.

His expression changed.

He looked toward Gabriel.

Claire stopped.

"What?"

Noah slowly lowered the phone.

"It's Agent Grant."

"She's standing right there."

"No."

He looked at Claire.

"The call is from the federal prison."

Claire's heartbeat changed.

"What happened?"

Noah hesitated.

"Arthur Kane is dead."

Silence.

Claire stared.

Then Noah added:

"And before he died, he left a confession addressed to Lily."
