THE FUNERAL THEY HELD FOR ME / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - The Woman Who Saw Me Fall

Her name was Rachel Ames.

Thirty-four.

Wildlife photographer.

She had been photographing mountain goats from a ridge nearly half a mile away when Claire fell.

Rachel had watched the entire confrontation through a telephoto lens.

But she'd never come forward.

Why?

Because Ethan Voss found her first.

He had seen her vehicle.

Tracked the registration.

Visited her home that night.

"He threatened my son," Rachel explained when Claire met her.

Rachel's hands shook.

"He said if I spoke, I'd disappear too."

"So why now?"

"Arthur is in prison."

"Ethan is cooperating."

"And my son is safe."

Rachel opened a storage case.

Inside were photographs.

Hundreds.

The final sequence removed the one uncertainty Claire still carried.

Michael's hand on her shoulder.

Claire stepping backward.

Michael moving forward.

Then—

his arms extending.

A push.

Clear.

Deliberate.

Claire stared at the image.

She had known.

But knowing and seeing were different.

Gabriel sat beside her.

"You don't need to keep looking."

Claire closed the case.

"No."

She didn't.

Rachel testified.

Michael's sentence increased.

More importantly, Sophie's family finally received the complete record of what happened to their daughter.

Claire met Sophie's mother, Maria.

She expected anger.

Instead Maria hugged her.

"You remembered her."

Claire cried.

"I'll keep remembering her."

The foundation expanded.

Within two years, it operated emergency housing in five states.

Gabriel trained staff in security.

Vanessa became legal director.

Noah ran transportation coordination.

Dr. Shaw volunteered medical support.

The terrible network that once destroyed lives became, piece by piece, replaced by one designed to save them.

Claire and Gabriel grew together slowly.

Their first kiss happened in Claire's kitchen because Lily threw applesauce at Gabriel's shirt.

Claire laughed so hard she cried.

Gabriel looked offended.

Then she kissed him.

He went completely still.

"Was that pity?"

"Do you want me to take it back?"

"No."

"Good."

He kissed her again.

There were no promises that night.

No grand speeches.

Claire had learned that love didn't need to arrive loudly.

Real love often looked like consistency.

Gabriel showed up.

When Claire had nightmares, he didn't demand explanations.

When she needed space, he gave it.

When Lily became sick at two in the morning, he drove them to urgent care even though Claire insisted she could handle it.

When Lily took her first steps, she walked toward Gabriel.

He pretended not to cry.

Claire let him pretend.

One evening Thomas invited them to dinner.

After Lily fell asleep in a travel crib, Thomas handed Claire a box.

"Your father wanted you to have this."

Inside was Daniel's watch.

Claire held it carefully.

"I thought Robert took it."

"Henry recovered it."

On the back was an engraving.

TRUTH COMES HOME.

Claire smiled.

Gabriel read it.

"Your family liked dramatic messages."

"You have neck tattoos."

"Unrelated."

Claire laughed.

Thomas watched them.

For the first time since everything began, his face looked peaceful.

But later that night, Claire received a letter forwarded from federal prison.

Michael.

She almost threw it away.

Gabriel said, "Your choice."

Claire opened it.

Michael wrote only one page.

Claire,

I don't expect forgiveness.

I'm writing because Arthur told me something before the quarry.

He said Robert wasn't the person who selected Sophie.

Someone else did.

I told investigators, but I don't know whether they believed me.

Her name may be in Vanessa's original legal archive under "S.L."

I'm sorry.

Michael.

Claire's stomach tightened.

Sophie Lane.

S.L.

Vanessa searched her archives.

One sealed file existed.

Created four months before the mountain.

Authorized request:

Locate female beneficiary proxy matching physical requirements.

Requester initials:

E.C.

Claire stared.

"Eleanor Carter."

Michael's supposed mother.

Gabriel's expression darkened.

Eleanor had vanished shortly after Arthur's arrest.

She was never charged.

Authorities assumed she'd fled out of fear.

Now Claire wondered whether she'd participated.

Grant reopened the inquiry.

Financial records showed Eleanor received five hundred thousand dollars from Northbridge one week before Sophie vanished.

Claire felt sick.

The woman who claimed to have protected Michael from Arthur may have been more involved than she admitted.

Agents searched for her.

Three days later, Eleanor called Claire herself.

"You found the file."

Claire kept her voice calm.

"Did you choose Sophie?"

Silence.

Then Eleanor said, "I chose a profile."

Claire closed her eyes.

"You knew someone would die."

"I was told the woman was already deceased."

The same excuse Michael used.

Maybe true.

Maybe not.

"Where are you?"

"I need to tell you what Arthur never did."

"No more secrets."

"Claire, Sophie's selection wasn't about you."

"What does that mean?"

"It was about the baby."

Claire's hand tightened around the phone.

"Lily?"

"No."

A pause.

"Arthur believed Sophie was carrying his grandchild."

Claire stared at Gabriel.

"What?"

"Sophie's baby wasn't random."

Eleanor's voice shook.

"Ethan Voss was the father."

Claire felt another layer crack open.

Arthur had ordered the body of his own lieutenant's pregnant partner used as a substitute.

Why?

Eleanor answered before Claire could ask.

"Because Ethan was planning to betray him."

Claire whispered, "Where are you?"

Eleanor gave an address.

A church.

When Claire and federal agents arrived, the building was empty.

A single envelope waited on the altar.

Inside was a confession.

Eleanor admitted helping identify Sophie.

She admitted lying.

She admitted knowing enough to understand the danger.

At the bottom she wrote:

I am turning myself in.

Then Claire heard the church doors open behind her.

Eleanor entered with both hands raised.

Federal agents surrounded her.

But before Grant reached her, Eleanor said:

"Claire, don't arrest me until I tell you where Sophie's son is."

Everyone froze.

Claire stared.

"Sophie's baby died."

Eleanor shook her head.

"No."

May you like

And then she said:

"The child in that coffin was never Sophie's."
