Chapter 11 - My Daughter Chose the Worst Possible Night

Labor began fast.
Too fast.
Claire barely reached Saint Arden before contractions were four minutes apart.
Gabriel arrived twenty minutes later with blood on his shirt.
"Are you hurt?"
"Not mine."
Claire gripped the bedrail.
Another contraction hit.
Gabriel looked terrified.
She almost laughed.
"You climbed into a quarry with armed criminals."
"That was different."
"How?"
"I understood the rules."
Claire breathed through the pain.
"Welcome to childbirth."
Dr. Shaw entered.
"Gabriel, unless you're the father or Claire wants you here, out."
Claire looked at him.
"Stay."
He stayed.
Not as a replacement for anyone.
Not as a romantic promise.
Simply because Claire asked.
Hours passed.
Diane arrived.
Thomas arrived.
Even Vanessa waited downstairs.
Michael was taken into surgery under federal guard.
Robert began talking almost immediately after arrest.
Cowardice, Grant said.
Arthur had abandoned him.
So Robert returned the favor.
He gave agents properties.
Accounts.
Safe houses.
But Arthur remained missing.
At 4:18 a.m., Claire gave birth to a daughter.
Seven pounds.
Healthy.
Furious.
Perfect.
Claire held her against her chest and cried.
"Hello, Lily."
Gabriel stood several feet away.
His eyes were red.
Claire noticed.
"Are you crying?"
"No."
"You're terrible at lying."
"So I've been told."
She smiled.
For one hour, the world became small.
No Arthur.
No trust.
No Northbridge.
Just Lily.
Then security alarms sounded.
Gabriel's expression changed instantly.
"What happened?"
A guard entered.
"Power interruption. Backup is active."
Gabriel looked toward the hallway.
Too convenient.
He called Noah.
No answer.
Claire's joy vanished.
"Gabriel."
"Stay here."
He moved toward the door.
Claire grabbed his arm.
"Don't leave us alone."
He stayed.
Security sealed the maternity floor.
Then Claire's phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
Noah unconscious in the parking garage.
Text beneath:
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR DAUGHTER.
Claire's blood went cold.
Another message.
YOU HAVE TEN MINUTES.
Gabriel called Grant.
Arthur had reached the hospital.
Or someone working for him had.
They moved Claire and Lily to an interior room.
Diane stayed.
Thomas was relocated separately.
Gabriel stood at the door.
Nine minutes.
Eight.
Seven.
Nothing happened.
Then the fire alarm triggered.
Sprinklers activated in the east wing.
Not maternity.
Diversion.
Gabriel didn't move.
Five minutes.
Claire held Lily tightly.
Three.
Two.
Then an elderly nurse entered.
"I need to check the baby's identification band."
Gabriel looked at her badge.
Something was wrong.
Claire saw it too.
The nurse's hands.
No hospital wrist access tag.
Gabriel stepped forward.
"Stop."
The woman reached into her pocket.
Gabriel caught her wrist.
A syringe fell.
Security rushed in.
The woman was not a nurse.
She carried fentanyl.
Enough to kill Claire.
Arthur's plan hadn't changed.
Only the setting.
Under interrogation, the woman revealed Arthur's final location.
A private marina.
He planned to leave the country by yacht.
Federal agents moved.
Arthur was arrested before sunrise.
No dramatic escape.
No final shootout.
Just an old man standing at the end of a dock while twenty federal agents surrounded him.
Gabriel watched the arrest through a secure feed.
Arthur looked small.
Almost ordinary.
Claire realized that was fitting.
Monsters didn't always look like monsters.
Sometimes they wore expensive suits.
Sometimes they smiled at family dinners.
Sometimes they kissed you before driving you to a mountain.
Arthur Kane was charged with conspiracy, murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, trafficking, fraud, and dozens of federal crimes.
Robert faced similar charges.
Ethan survived the gunshot and agreed to testify.
Dr. Harlan cooperated.
Vanessa produced the original trust draft.
Henry provided financial evidence.
Thomas came back from the dead publicly.
The case became impossible to bury.
But Claire still faced one final problem.
Michael.
He survived surgery.
Two days after Lily's birth, he requested to see Claire.
Gabriel didn't like it.
Claire went anyway.
Federal guards stood outside.
Michael lay in a hospital bed.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then he looked at Lily through the glass nursery wall.
"She's beautiful."
Claire's face hardened.
"You don't get to call her yours."
Michael nodded.
"I know."
"Do you?"
"Yes."
Claire waited.
"I'm pleading guilty."
That surprised her.
"To everything?"
"Everything I did."
"And Sophie?"
"I'll testify."
"Arthur?"
"Yes."
"Robert?"
"Yes."
Claire studied him.
"Why?"
Michael looked at his hands.
"Because apology without consequence is just another lie."
For the first time since the mountain, Claire heard something from him that wasn't manipulation.
It didn't earn forgiveness.
It simply sounded true.
"I loved you once," Michael said.
Claire's eyes filled.
"Then you should have left me before you became someone willing to kill me."
He nodded.
"I know."
"You don't get forgiveness because you finally feel guilty."
"I know."
"You don't get Lily."
His face broke.
"I know."
Claire stood.
"Goodbye, Michael."
He didn't ask her to stay.
Claire walked out.
Gabriel waited in the hallway.
"How was it?"
"Finished."
Gabriel nodded.
Then Grant approached.
"We found something in Arthur's files."
Claire sighed.
"What now?"
Grant looked uncomfortable.
"It's about your grandfather."
Thomas stood nearby holding Lily.
Claire turned toward him.
Grant held up a document.
A recently signed transfer authorization.
Thomas's signature.
Claire frowned.
"What is it?"
Grant said quietly:
"Your grandfather transferred three million dollars to Arthur Kane two months ago."
Claire looked at Thomas.
Thomas's face changed.
May you like
And he whispered:
"Claire, there is one last thing I never told you."
