Chapter 9 - The Truth Hidden In My Birth

I stared at the photograph.

I couldn't look away.

The woman standing in front of me was younger.

Her hair was darker.

Her face was different.

But I recognized her.

Not from memory.

From the files.

From the hidden room.

From all the secrets everyone had tried to keep from me.

She was connected to Victoria.

And behind them was a baby.

Me.

My name was written on the blanket.

Evelyn Carter.

My fingers tightened around my phone.

"Who sent this?"

The woman standing in front of my house looked at my expression.

She already knew.

"You received it."

It wasn't a question.

I looked at her.

"Who are you?"

She took a slow breath.

"My name is Rachel."

I waited.

Nothing else.

Just Rachel.

After everything I had discovered, I no longer accepted half answers.

"Rachel who?"

Her eyes became sad.

"Rachel Hayes."

The world seemed to stop.

I looked back at the house.

At Commander Hayes.

At the man who had spent my entire career guiding me.

Then back at the woman in front of me.

"No."

Rachel nodded slowly.

"Yes."

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

"You're related to Hayes."

She looked toward the house.

"He is my brother."

My mind raced.

Another connection.

Another hidden relationship.

Another person who had been close to me while hiding the truth.

I stepped backward.

"How many people knew?"

Rachel didn't answer.

That was an answer.

I turned toward the house.

Hayes was standing behind the window.

Watching.

Waiting.

I walked back inside.

Everyone looked at me.

Nobody spoke.

I placed my phone on the table.

"The woman outside is Rachel Hayes."

The silence was immediate.

Hayes closed his eyes.

Daniel looked away.

Michael looked confused.

Linda looked terrified.

I saw it.

The reaction.

Not surprise.

Fear.

"Everyone knows her."

My voice was calm.

"But nobody wants to say why."

Hayes finally stepped forward.

"Evelyn."

I raised my hand.

"No."

He stopped.

"I want the truth."

His face showed pain.

"You deserve it."

I almost laughed.

"That's interesting."

I looked around the room.

"Because for twenty years, nobody thought I deserved it."

Nobody answered.

Rachel entered the house.

She walked slowly.

Like she had done this before.

Like she knew every corner.

She stopped in front of Hayes.

The two of them looked at each other.

There was history there.

Pain.

Regret.

Things they had never said.

"You never told her."

Hayes looked down.

"No."

Rachel shook her head.

"You promised Victoria."

"I know."

"Then why are we here?"

Hayes looked at me.

"Because they found her."

I froze.

"Found who?"

Nobody spoke.

Then Rachel answered.

"Victoria."

The room became silent.

I looked at Daniel.

"She's alive?"

He didn't answer immediately.

That hesitation was enough.

"She's alive."

My voice was barely a whisper.

After all these years.

The woman I believed was gone.

The woman everyone said I lost.

Was alive.

But why?

Why would a mother leave her child?

Why would everyone hide her?

I looked at Rachel.

"Where is she?"

Rachel looked at Hayes.

Then Daniel.

Then me.

"Before I tell you that, you need to know why she left."

I crossed my arms.

"I'm listening."

Rachel walked toward the table.

She picked up the photograph from my phone.

"Victoria discovered something."

"What?"

"Your birth wasn't supposed to happen."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

She looked at me.

"When Victoria became pregnant, someone tried to erase her medical records."

My stomach tightened.

"Why?"

"Because your existence exposed them."

Again.

That word.

Evidence.

"Who?"

Rachel looked at the files.

"The same people your father was investigating."

Richard Vale.

Commander Hayes.

Linda.

The network.

But something still didn't make sense.

"My father raised me."

Rachel nodded.

"Because James Carter loved you."

I looked at her.

"He wasn't my biological father."

"No."

"But he was my father."

"Yes."

That was the first answer tonight that felt honest.

Rachel continued.

"James discovered that Victoria was being watched."

"By who?"

She looked at Hayes.

"By people inside the military."

My eyes moved toward him.

Hayes didn't deny it.

"My father knew?"

"He knew enough."

Rachel sat down.

"James and Victoria tried to expose them."

"What happened?"

Her face changed.

"Someone betrayed them."

The room became colder.

"Who?"

Rachel looked at me.

"Someone they trusted."

I waited.

But she didn't say the name.

I knew this pattern.

Everyone knew.

Everyone waited.

Everyone protected the truth.

I stepped forward.

"Say it."

Rachel hesitated.

Then whispered:

"Michael."

The room exploded into silence.

I turned slowly.

My husband looked shocked.

"No."

Rachel looked at him.

"You were young."

Michael shook his head.

"I didn't know."

"You knew enough."

I stared at him.

My heart hurt.

Not because I believed her.

Because I didn't know what to believe anymore.

"Michael."

He looked at me.

"Evelyn, I swear—"

"Stop."

He stopped.

"Did you know my mother was alive?"

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

And that was enough.

"You knew."

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

I stepped closer.

"Michael."

He looked down.

"I knew there was a possibility."

My eyes filled with disbelief.

"A possibility?"

He looked desperate.

"I was trying to protect you."

I turned away.

Everyone had the same excuse.

Protect.

Protect.

Protect.

But every protection came with a lie.

Then the lights went out.

The entire house went dark.

Everyone froze.

A second later, a sound came from outside.

Glass breaking.

Hayes immediately moved.

"Everyone down."

The military instinct returned.

We moved.

Not because we trusted him.

Because we knew danger.

A shadow crossed the window.

Someone was outside.

Rachel whispered:

"They found us."

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One message.

A video.

I opened it.

The screen showed a woman sitting in a dark room.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

My breath stopped.

Victoria.

My mother.

She looked directly into the camera.

And then she spoke.

"Evelyn, if you are watching this..."

She paused.

May you like

Tears filled her eyes.

"...it means the person you trusted the most has already found you."
