Chapter 10 - The Person I Trusted The Most

I couldn't breathe.

The video continued playing.

Victoria looked directly into the camera.

Her face was older than the woman in my childhood photographs.

But her eyes were the same.

The same eyes I had spent my entire life trying to remember.

"Evelyn..."

Her voice shook.

"I don't know when you will see this."

She looked away for a moment.

Like she was fighting tears.

"But if you are watching this, then they failed to keep you away from the truth."

The room around me disappeared.

The broken window.

The darkness.

The people standing beside me.

Everything became background noise.

Because the woman I believed was gone was speaking to me.

My mother.

"I need you to listen carefully."

Victoria leaned closer to the camera.

"Do not trust the person who tells you they protected you."

My eyes moved slowly.

Everyone in the room understood.

Everyone except me had been waiting for this.

"Your father was right."

Victoria continued.

"James knew they would come after you."

She paused.

"He knew they would use the people closest to you."

My hand tightened around the phone.

The words hurt because they were true.

I looked at Michael.

He looked away.

I looked at Hayes.

His face was filled with regret.

I looked at Linda.

She was crying silently.

Then Victoria said the words that changed everything.

"The person who betrayed us was never outside the family."

My heart dropped.

Not outside.

Inside.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

The video flickered.

Victoria looked behind her.

Like she heard something.

Then she whispered:

"Evelyn, if Michael is with you..."

The room went completely silent.

Michael froze.

"...do not let him convince you he didn't know."

The video stopped.

No ending.

No explanation.

Just darkness.

I lowered the phone.

Nobody spoke.

Not even Michael.

Because the truth had finally entered the room.

I looked at him.

"Tell me."

His face changed.

"Evelyn..."

"Tell me what she meant."

He looked at Hayes.

That was his mistake.

A small movement.

A small reaction.

But I saw it.

"You looked at him."

Michael shook his head.

"No."

"You looked at him because you wanted permission."

His expression broke.

"I was trying to figure out how to explain."

I stepped closer.

"Then explain."

The silence lasted several seconds.

Finally, Michael spoke.

"I knew Victoria was alive."

The words hurt more than I expected.

Even after everything.

Even after all the lies.

Hearing him admit it still felt like something inside me collapsed.

"When?"

"Three years ago."

I stared at him.

"Three years?"

He nodded.

"I found evidence."

"Where?"

"In the files my father left."

I frowned.

"Your father?"

Michael looked down.

"My family was connected to Richard Vale."

Everyone became still.

I understood.

Another connection.

Another hidden thread.

"My father worked with him."

Michael continued.

"He didn't know everything at first."

"But later?"

He looked ashamed.

"Later, he did."

I closed my eyes.

My husband had not just hidden a secret.

He had been standing in the middle of one.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Michael's voice cracked.

"Because I was afraid."

"Of what?"

He looked at me.

"That if you knew the truth, they would come after you."

I laughed quietly.

"Michael."

My voice was empty.

"They already came after me."

I touched my damaged hair.

"They already hurt me."

He looked away.

"I know."

That answer made my anger return.

"You know?"

I stepped closer.

"You watched."

"I didn't want that."

"But you allowed it."

He couldn't deny it.

Outside, the vehicles remained.

The threat was still there.

But somehow, the biggest betrayal wasn't outside the house.

It was standing in front of me.

Hayes finally spoke.

"Evelyn."

I looked at him.

"We don't have time."

I almost ignored him.

But then I saw his expression.

The same expression from before.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For me.

"What happens now?"

Hayes walked toward the table.

He placed a folder down.

"This."

I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Real documents.

Not copies.

Not hidden files.

Original records.

The first page was a military investigation.

The second page was a list of names.

The third page made me stop.

Richard Vale.

Linda Carter.

Michael Carter.

Commander Hayes.

Victoria Carter.

James Carter.

All connected.

But there was one more name.

A name I had never seen.

At the bottom.

The person who created the operation.

The person who ordered everything.

I stared.

"Who is this?"

Nobody answered.

Hayes looked at the door.

Then back at me.

"Someone who has been watching you since the day you were born."

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A new message.

Only one sentence.

"Open the basement."

I looked up.

"The basement?"

Linda's face went white.

"No."

Everyone turned toward her.

She whispered:

"That's where it started."

I looked at the others.

Nobody moved.

That told me enough.

There was something in that basement.

Something everyone feared.

I walked toward the stairs.

Michael followed.

"Evelyn, wait."

I stopped.

"Are you going to tell me the truth this time?"

He didn't answer.

I continued walking.

The basement door was at the end of the hallway.

I had lived in this house for ten years.

I had walked past that door hundreds of times.

It was always locked.

Always ignored.

Always avoided.

I reached for the handle.

It didn't move.

Locked.

I looked at Linda.

"Where is the key?"

She didn't answer.

Hayes stepped forward.

"I have it."

I looked at him.

"You knew?"

He nodded.

"I was waiting for you to ask."

He handed me the key.

My hand touched the cold metal.

Then I unlocked the door.

The basement stairs disappeared into darkness.

I turned on the light.

Nothing happened.

No sound.

No movement.

I stepped down.

One step.

Two steps.

Three.

At the bottom was a room.

Not a storage room.

A command center.

Computers.

Files.

Photographs.

And on the wall...

Pictures of me.

Every age.

Every year.

Every important moment.

Someone had been watching my entire life.

I walked closer.

Then I saw the newest photograph.

A picture taken that morning.

Me standing beside my coffin-colored reflection in the mirror.

My shaved head.

My military uniform.

My pain.

Someone had photographed me after Linda cut my hair.

Under the picture was a handwritten note.

Three words.

"She finally knows."

Then my phone vibrated.

One final message appeared.

Unknown number.

The message contained only a name.

The name of the person who had been controlling everything from the beginning.

May you like

And when I read it...

I realized the person standing behind me in the basement was the one person I never expected to see.
