Chapter 7 - The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The door handle moved.

Slowly.

Everyone in the hallway stopped breathing.

Nobody reached for a weapon.

Nobody moved.

Because everyone in that room knew the person standing outside wasn't an ordinary visitor.

Hayes stepped in front of me.

Not like a commander.

Like a father.

The realization hit me harder than anything else that night.

For years, I had followed his orders.

Trusted his judgment.

Looked up to him.

And now he was standing between me and a threat.

Not because I was his soldier.

Because I was his daughter.

The lock clicked.

The door opened.

A man stepped inside.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

I didn't know his face.

Not completely.

But something about him made my chest tighten.

His eyes.

The way he looked at me.

Like he had been waiting his entire life for this moment.

Linda whispered:

"No..."

The man looked at her.

"Hello, Linda."

Her face turned pale.

Michael stepped backward.

"That's impossible."

The man looked at him.

"I know."

His voice was calm.

"Everyone was supposed to believe I was gone."

I looked at Hayes.

Then at the stranger.

Then back at Hayes.

"Who is he?"

Nobody answered.

I felt anger rising.

"No."

My voice cut through the room.

"Nobody stays silent this time."

The man looked at me.

His eyes softened.

"Evelyn."

Hearing my name from him felt strange.

Too familiar.

Like a memory I couldn't remember.

"Who are you?"

He took a slow breath.

"My name is Daniel Carter."

My body froze.

The name hit me instantly.

Carter.

My last name.

The name I carried my entire life.

"My father was James Carter."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"Then who are you?"

His expression changed.

Pain crossed his face.

"I was the man your father trusted to protect you."

I stared at him.

"Protect me?"

I almost laughed.

"Everyone says that."

I pointed around the room.

"Everyone protected me by lying."

Daniel accepted my anger.

"You have every right to hate me."

"Do I know you?"

He looked down.

"No."

"Have I ever met you?"

"No."

"Then why are you here now?"

The room became silent.

Daniel looked at Hayes.

Hayes nodded slightly.

That small movement told me everything.

They had been waiting for this moment.

Daniel reached into his coat.

Michael immediately moved.

Hayes raised his hand.

"Don't."

Daniel pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Damaged.

With my name written across it.

Again.

Evelyn Carter.

My heart sank.

"Another letter?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Your father wrote this one before he died."

I didn't take it.

"Why didn't I get it?"

His eyes moved toward Linda.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at her.

"Linda."

She looked away.

That was enough.

"You had it."

Her voice shook.

"I was trying to protect you."

I stepped closer.

"No."

My voice became cold.

"You were hiding me."

Linda started crying.

"I was afraid."

"Of what?"

She looked at Daniel.

"Of what would happen if the truth came out."

I turned toward Daniel.

"What truth?"

Daniel opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

Because suddenly, every person in the room looked afraid.

Not of me.

Of something else.

A sound came from outside.

A car door closing.

Then another.

Hayes immediately looked toward the window.

His expression changed.

"They found us."

Michael looked confused.

"Who?"

Hayes didn't answer.

I walked toward the window.

Outside were three black vehicles.

No markings.

No lights.

Just parked in front of my house.

A group of people stood outside.

Waiting.

Daniel looked at me.

"Your father was right."

I looked at him.

"About what?"

He whispered:

"They never stopped looking for you."

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One message.

I opened it.

A photograph.

My house.

Taken from across the street.

But this time, there was something different.

A red circle marked the window.

The window behind me.

Under the picture were five words.

"She was always watching you."

I looked around the room.

Everyone was still.

"Who?"

Nobody answered.

Then Linda slowly raised her hand.

Not pointing outside.

Pointing behind me.

My blood went cold.

I turned.

There was a mirror on the wall.

And in the reflection...

Someone was standing behind me.

A woman.

Someone I had never seen.

But everyone else recognized.

Hayes whispered her name.

May you like

"Victoria..."

And the woman in the mirror slowly smiled.
