Chapter 6 - The Father I Never Knew

I stared at the message.

One name.

Only one name.

My fingers went cold around my phone.

Because I knew that name.

Commander Hayes.

The person standing outside the hidden room door was the man I had trusted for years.

My commander.

My mentor.

The man who placed the Colonel insignia on my uniform.

The man who told me I had earned my place.

And now he was standing outside my house.

Listening.

Waiting.

I looked at Sarah.

She didn't look surprised.

That scared me more than anything.

"You knew."

Her eyes lowered.

"I suspected."

"No."

I stepped closer.

"You knew enough to hide it from me."

Sarah looked hurt.

But I didn't care.

Not anymore.

Everyone around me had been making decisions about my life.

My father.

Michael.

Linda.

Sarah.

Commander Hayes.

Everyone thought they knew what was best for me.

But nobody asked me what I wanted.

Michael moved toward me.

"Evelyn, you need to understand something."

I turned to him.

"Do not tell me what I need to understand."

He stopped.

My voice remained calm.

But the room felt colder.

"I spent my entire life believing my father died protecting our family."

I looked at the video.

"Now I find out he was hiding my identity from me."

I looked at Sarah.

"I find out my commander might be my biological father."

Then I looked at Michael.

"And I find out my husband knew pieces of this entire story."

Nobody spoke.

Then we heard it.

A sound from outside the hidden room.

A footstep.

Slow.

Controlled.

Someone wasn't trying to hide anymore.

Sarah immediately turned off the lamp.

The room went dark.

Michael whispered:

"He knows."

I looked at him.

"Who?"

He didn't answer.

Because we all knew.

Commander Hayes.

I stood still.

The old version of me would have felt shocked.

Confused.

Lost.

But the person standing there now wasn't the same woman who woke up with her hair cut.

That woman was hurt.

This woman was searching.

I quietly opened the door.

Michael grabbed my shoulder.

"Evelyn, wait."

I looked at his hand.

He released me.

I stepped into the hallway.

The house was silent.

The kind of silence that came before something happened.

Then I saw him.

Commander Hayes.

Standing near the staircase.

Still wearing his military uniform.

Still carrying himself like the man who had always been in control.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he said my name.

"Evelyn."

I stared at him.

"How long?"

His expression changed.

"I don't know what you mean."

I almost smiled.

The same answer.

The same avoidance.

The same strategy.

"Don't do that."

My voice was quiet.

"Not with me."

He looked at Sarah behind me.

Then Michael.

Then back at me.

"You opened the room."

It wasn't a question.

It was confirmation.

"You knew about it."

He didn't deny it.

That hurt more.

"Why?"

He looked away.

"Because your father wanted me to."

I stepped forward.

"My father?"

"Yes."

"The man who raised me?"

Hayes nodded.

"Yes."

"Then why did the video say you were my real father?"

The hallway became silent.

His face changed.

Not surprise.

Pain.

Like he had been waiting for that moment for years.

Finally, he said:

"Because it's true."

The words hit harder than I expected.

Even after seeing the video.

Even after all the evidence.

Hearing him say it made it real.

I looked at him.

"You knew."

He nodded.

"I knew from the day you were born."

My chest tightened.

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

His eyes became wet.

"Because your father made me promise."

I laughed softly.

A painful laugh.

"Everyone keeps making promises around me."

I stepped closer.

"But nobody tells me the truth."

Hayes accepted that.

Because he knew I was right.

"My biological father died before you were born."

I froze.

"What?"

He looked at me.

"Your father, James Carter, raised you. He loved you. He was your father in every way that mattered."

I listened.

"But your biological father..."

He stopped.

"Who?"

Hayes looked at me.

"Someone who put your life in danger."

The answer made no sense.

"If he was dangerous, why hide him?"

"Because the truth was dangerous."

I looked at the files.

"The files. The operation. Linda. Richard Vale."

Hayes' expression changed.

"You found Richard's name?"

"Who is he?"

Hayes looked toward the window.

"Richard Vale was the person who wanted your father's investigation buried."

"Why?"

"Because your father discovered a network."

"What kind of network?"

Hayes didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"People inside the military. People with influence. People who could erase records and destroy careers."

My mind went back to the first file.

Operation Carter.

My name.

My picture.

"Why was I involved?"

Hayes looked at me.

"Because your father discovered something about your birth."

The words felt unreal.

"What?"

He walked closer.

"When you were born, someone tried to change your records."

I stared at him.

"Someone tried to erase me?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

His answer was quiet.

"Because you were evidence."

I felt my heartbeat increase.

"Evidence of what?"

Before he could answer, Linda appeared at the end of the hallway.

Everyone turned.

She looked different.

No arrogance.

No confidence.

Only fear.

"Hayes."

His face hardened.

"Linda."

I looked between them.

"You two know each other."

Neither answered.

I stepped forward.

"How long?"

Linda looked at me.

"Longer than you think."

My hands tightened.

"You were part of this."

She shook her head.

"I was trying to protect you."

I almost laughed.

"Another person protecting me."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Evelyn, you don't understand."

"No."

I looked directly at her.

"I understand perfectly."

I pointed toward the hidden room.

"You watched my life like it was a mission."

Linda looked down.

Then whispered:

"I wasn't watching you."

A pause.

"I was watching for them."

The hallway went silent.

"For who?"

She didn't answer.

Instead, she looked toward the front door.

And her face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not guilt.

Not regret.

Fear.

I followed her eyes.

Someone was outside.

A car had stopped in front of the house.

The headlights cut through the windows.

Hayes immediately moved.

"Everyone get away from the windows."

His voice was no longer my commander.

It was a warning.

Michael looked outside.

Then froze.

"What is it?"

Hayes didn't answer.

I watched him.

The man who had faced battles.

The man who never showed fear.

Was afraid.

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One message.

A picture.

I opened it.

It showed the front of my house.

Taken seconds ago.

Under the picture were four words.

"Your father has arrived."

May you like

I looked toward the door.

Then the handle slowly began to turn.
