Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Knew My Secret

I froze.
The voice came from inside the wall.
Not outside the room.
Not from the hallway.
Inside.
For a moment, my mind refused to accept what I was hearing.
A hidden room.
A hidden file.
A hidden person.
Everything about this house was built around secrets.
I slowly stepped closer to the opening.
Michael's voice came from behind me.
"Evelyn, don't."
I stopped.
Not because I was afraid.
Because of the way he said it.
Not like a warning.
Like a memory.
Like he had been here before.
I turned toward him.
"You knew."
His face tightened.
"I knew there was a room."
My eyes narrowed.
"And you didn't tell me?"
"I was trying to keep you away from it."
I looked at him.
"From my own life?"
He didn't answer.
That was becoming his answer too often.
I turned back toward the opening.
The hidden door was only halfway open.
Darkness filled the space behind it.
Then the voice came again.
"Evelyn."
This time I recognized something.
The voice wasn't threatening.
It sounded tired.
Broken.
Like someone who had been waiting for years.
I reached for the door.
Michael grabbed my arm.
"Please."
I looked at his hand.
Then at his face.
Slowly, he let go.
Because he knew.
Nothing could stop me anymore.
I pushed the hidden door open.
Inside was a small room.
Not a closet.
Not storage.
A room designed to hide something important.
There was a desk.
A chair.
A small lamp.
And hundreds of documents covering the walls.
But what caught my attention was the person sitting in the corner.
An older woman.
Her hair was gray.
Her face was pale.
She looked exhausted.
But her eyes...
Her eyes knew me.
I couldn't move.
Because I knew her too.
Not personally.
But from somewhere.
From somewhere buried deep in my memory.
The woman stood slowly.
"Evelyn."
I stared.
"Who are you?"
Her lips trembled.
"My name is Sarah."
The name meant nothing.
Until she said the next words.
"I knew your father."
Everything stopped.
I stepped forward.
"My father is dead."
She nodded.
"I know."
"Then why are you here?"
She looked around the hidden room.
"Because your father built this place for one reason."
"What reason?"
Her eyes met mine.
"To keep you alive."
I felt anger rising.
Everyone kept saying the same thing.
Protect you.
Keep you safe.
Hide the truth.
But nobody ever asked what I wanted.
"Everyone keeps saying they are protecting me."
My voice became colder.
"But somehow, everyone keeps lying to me."
Sarah looked down.
"Your father made mistakes."
I laughed quietly.
"My father?"
I held up the file.
"His name is everywhere."
I pointed toward the room.
"My husband's name is connected."
"My mother-in-law's name is connected."
"My commander is connected."
I looked directly at her.
"So tell me the truth."
Sarah was silent.
Then she walked toward the desk.
She opened a drawer.
Inside was a small envelope.
My name was written on it.
Evelyn Carter.
My hands became cold.
"That was supposed to be given to you when you turned thirty."
I stared at the envelope.
"I never received it."
"I know."
"Why?"
Sarah looked at Michael.
Not me.
Him.
That bothered me.
"What does Michael have to do with this?"
Michael looked away.
Sarah answered quietly.
"More than you know."
I turned toward him.
"Michael?"
He didn't speak.
I felt something inside me break.
Not because of what he had done.
Because of what he had hidden.
I had spent years trusting this man.
Sleeping beside him.
Building a life with him.
And all this time...
He knew there was another story.
I picked up the envelope.
It was sealed.
The handwriting was my father's.
I recognized it immediately.
My hands shook slightly.
I opened it.
Inside was a single page.
Only a few sentences.
Evelyn,
If you are reading this, it means they failed to stop you.
Do not trust anyone who tells you they are protecting you.
Find the original file.
The truth was never destroyed.
It was hidden.
I read the words again.
Then again.
"They failed to stop you."
Who was "they"?
I looked at Sarah.
"Who was my father afraid of?"
She didn't answer immediately.
Then she whispered:
"The people closest to you."
My eyes moved to Michael.
He looked like he expected that answer.
I felt betrayed all over again.
"Did you know?"
He swallowed.
"I knew there was a possibility."
"A possibility?"
My voice became sharper.
"My mother attacked me."
"I know."
"You stood there."
"I know."
"You let it happen."
His eyes filled with regret.
"I thought it would scare them."
I stared at him.
"Scare who?"
He didn't answer.
Sarah stepped between us.
"Michael was trying to expose them."
I looked at her.
"By letting me be humiliated?"
She looked down.
"No."
She paused.
"By making them believe you were broken."
The room went silent.
I understood.
They thought removing my confidence would make me vulnerable.
They thought destroying my image would make me easier to control.
They underestimated me.
But one question remained.
"Who are they?"
Sarah walked toward the wall.
She pulled down a photograph.
A group of people standing together.
My father.
Linda.
Richard Vale.
And someone else.
Someone I recognized immediately.
My breath stopped.
Commander Hayes.
I grabbed the photo.
"No."
Sarah looked at me.
"Yes."
I stared at the image.
Commander Hayes was younger.
Standing beside my father.
Standing beside the people who had been hiding things from me.
The man who promoted me.
The man who guided my career.
The man I trusted.
My phone vibrated.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
One message.
A video file.
I opened it.
The screen showed a security recording.
Date.
Twelve years ago.
The night my father died.
I watched.
My father entered a room.
Commander Hayes followed him.
They were arguing.
Then my father said something that made my entire body go cold.
The video had no sound.
But subtitles appeared.
One sentence.
"She cannot know that Hayes is her real father."
I stopped breathing.
The phone slipped slightly in my hand.
I looked at Sarah.
Then Michael.
Neither of them spoke.
Because they knew.
They knew what I had just seen.
I replayed the sentence.
Again.
And again.
Then my phone received one final message.
A name.
May you like
Only one name.
And it was the name of the person standing outside the hidden room door.
