Chapter 4 - The Person Behind The Door

I didn't move.
I stared at the reflection in the photograph.
The person standing behind us wasn't a shadow.
It wasn't a mistake caused by the glass.
It was someone real.
Someone standing inside the office.
Behind me.
I slowly lowered my phone.
Michael noticed my expression.
"What is it?"
I didn't answer.
I turned around.
The office was empty.
The chair.
The desk.
The shelves.
Everything looked normal.
But I knew better.
A soldier doesn't ignore evidence just because the threat disappears.
"Who else has a key to this room?"
Michael looked confused.
"What?"
"Who has access to your office?"
"No one."
I looked at him.
"That's not true."
His face tightened.
"Why would you say that?"
"Because someone was standing behind us."
The color drained from his face.
For a second, he didn't look like my husband.
He looked like someone who had just remembered something terrible.
"Evelyn..."
"Who was it?"
He didn't answer.
I walked toward the door.
Michael stepped in front of me.
"Wait."
I stopped.
"Move."
"You don't understand."
"Then explain."
His eyes moved toward the hallway.
Like he was afraid someone might hear.
"Not here."
I almost laughed.
"Funny."
"What?"
"You spent years keeping secrets in this house, and now you're worried about someone listening?"
He looked hurt.
But I didn't care.
Not anymore.
I opened the office door.
The hallway was empty.
The lights were on.
Everything was quiet.
Too quiet.
I walked outside.
Michael followed.
"Evelyn, we need to leave."
"No."
My voice was calm.
"We need answers."
I checked every room.
The living room.
The kitchen.
The guest room.
Nothing.
Whoever had been there was gone.
But they had left something behind.
On the floor near the staircase.
A small piece of paper.
I picked it up.
Michael immediately recognized it.
His expression changed.
"What?"
I looked at him.
"You know this."
He swallowed.
The paper was old.
Folded several times.
On the front was a handwritten note.
My name.
Evelyn Carter.
I opened it.
Only one sentence was written inside.
"Your father was right about them."
My breath stopped.
My father.
Again.
Everything kept returning to him.
The man who raised me.
The man who taught me discipline.
The man who always told me:
"Trust actions, not words."
I looked at Michael.
"What did my father find?"
He looked away.
"I don't know everything."
"But you know something."
He closed his eyes.
"Yes."
"Tell me."
He stayed silent.
I stepped closer.
"Michael."
His voice became quiet.
"Your father discovered someone inside the military was changing records."
I frowned.
"Changing records?"
"Moving information. Hiding evidence. Making certain people disappear from official reports."
I looked at the file in my hand.
"And Commander Hayes?"
Michael nodded.
"Your father suspected him."
My heart sank.
Commander Hayes had been my mentor.
The man who recommended me for promotion.
The man who told me I had earned every achievement.
I wanted to believe Michael was wrong.
But the evidence was growing.
"Why didn't my father tell me?"
Michael looked at me.
"Because he was trying to protect you."
I shook my head.
"No."
My voice became harder.
"My father never protected me by hiding the truth."
Michael didn't respond.
Because he knew.
I opened the file again.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Names.
Then I found something that made my hands freeze.
A photograph of Linda.
Not recently.
Years ago.
She was standing beside a man I didn't recognize.
Behind them was a military building.
On the back of the photograph was a date.
The same year my father died.
I looked at Michael.
"Who is this man?"
He didn't answer.
I turned the photo around.
The man's name was written there.
Richard Vale.
The name meant nothing to me.
But it meant something to Michael.
His face changed.
"You know him."
Michael sat down.
Slowly.
Like his legs couldn't support him anymore.
"Where did you get that?"
"It was in the file."
He rubbed his face.
"Evelyn, you need to stop."
"No."
I stood in front of him.
"You don't get to decide when I stop."
He looked at me.
"You don't understand what you're dealing with."
"Then help me understand."
He looked toward the window.
"Richard Vale was connected to your father's investigation."
"Connected how?"
Michael hesitated.
Then whispered:
"He was the reason your father started investigating."
The room went silent.
I looked at the photograph again.
Linda.
Richard Vale.
My father's death.
My promotion.
The attack against me.
It all felt connected.
But I didn't know how.
Then my phone vibrated.
Another message.
Unknown number.
This time, only three words.
"Check Linda's room."
I stared at the screen.
Michael saw the message.
His face changed immediately.
"No."
I looked at him.
"No?"
"Don't go in there."
"Why?"
He stood.
"Because if you find what I think you'll find..."
He stopped.
I waited.
But he didn't finish.
That was enough.
I walked upstairs.
Michael followed behind me.
"Evelyn, please."
I ignored him.
Linda's room was at the end of the hallway.
The door was closed.
I reached for the handle.
Locked.
I looked at Michael.
"She locks her bedroom?"
He didn't answer.
I pulled out my military access tool from my bag.
Years of service taught me to prepare for situations where doors were meant to stay closed.
The lock clicked.
The door opened.
Inside, everything looked normal.
A bed.
A dresser.
A mirror.
Perfume bottles.
Family photographs.
Nothing suspicious.
Until I opened the closet.
Behind the clothes was a hidden panel.
My heart started beating faster.
Someone had built a secret compartment inside the wall.
I opened it.
Inside were dozens of files.
My name was written on every folder.
I grabbed the first one.
The title made my hands shake.
"Operation Carter."
I opened it.
The first page contained a photograph of me.
Not as an officer.
Not as a soldier.
As a child.
My father was standing beside me.
And underneath the picture was a note.
"Subject has no idea who her real enemy is."
I looked at Michael.
He was standing frozen at the doorway.
"Michael..."
He looked terrified.
"Evelyn."
I held up the file.
"Why does your mother's secret file have my name on it?"
He didn't answer.
Then something moved behind me.
A sound.
A quiet click.
Like someone had just locked the door from the inside.
I turned around.
The closet wall opened slightly.
May you like
And a voice whispered my name.
"Evelyn..."
