Chapter 3 - The Secret Behind the Locked Office

Michael didn't move.
He stood in the doorway holding the document like it weighed more than paper.
For the first time since I met him, my husband looked like a man who had been caught.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Afraid.
I looked from his face to the document in his hand.
"What is that?"
He didn't answer.
The silence told me more than words could.
I stepped closer.
"Michael."
His fingers tightened around the paper.
"Evelyn, you need to listen to me before you do anything."
I almost smiled.
That was the same sentence people used when they knew they had already lost control.
Before you react.
Before you judge.
Before you discover the truth.
"I've been listening for ten years," I said.
His expression changed.
A small crack appeared in his confidence.
"That's not fair."
I looked at him.
"Fair?"
I pointed toward the box beneath the desk.
"Someone cut my hair while I was unconscious."
My voice stayed calm.
"Someone was standing in my bedroom watching."
I held up my phone.
"And now I find something hidden in your office with my name on it."
Michael looked at the phone.
His face went pale.
"You weren't supposed to see that."
The words left his mouth before he could stop them.
I froze.
Not because I was surprised.
Because he had just confirmed everything.
"You knew."
Michael looked away.
"Evelyn..."
"No."
I stepped back.
"You knew someone was there."
He didn't answer.
I walked toward the small box.
Michael moved quickly.
"Don't touch it."
I stopped.
The room became silent.
Because that was the first time he had given me a real reaction.
Not anger.
Not frustration.
Fear.
"What is inside?"
He swallowed.
"I can't explain."
"Try."
He looked at the box.
Then at me.
"That box isn't what you think."
"Then tell me what it is."
Another silence.
I had spent years learning how to read people.
In meetings.
In interrogations.
On missions.
People always revealed themselves when they were afraid of something.
And Michael was terrified of that box.
I reached down.
His voice became louder.
"Evelyn, stop."
I opened the box.
Inside was a folder.
A photograph.
And a small USB drive.
My heart tightened.
I picked up the photograph first.
It was old.
A picture of me.
But not from our wedding.
Not from my military career.
It was from fifteen years ago.
Before Michael.
Before marriage.
Before I became who I was.
I was standing beside my father.
The man who inspired me to join the military.
But there was something strange.
Someone had written on the back.
I turned it over.
Four words.
"She was chosen."
I looked at Michael.
"What does this mean?"
He didn't answer.
I picked up the folder.
The first page made my hands stop.
It was a military report.
My name was on it.
But I had never seen it before.
I read the first line.
"Officer Evaluation Review — Classified."
My eyes moved down.
Then I saw it.
A signature.
Not mine.
Not my commander's.
Michael's.
I looked up slowly.
"You signed this?"
His face changed.
"Evelyn, please."
"Why is your signature on my classified file?"
He walked into the room and closed the door.
That small action told me everything.
He didn't want anyone else hearing.
"I was trying to protect you."
I stared at him.
"Protect me?"
I held up the document.
"You accessed my military records."
"I had permission."
"From who?"
He didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"Michael."
His shoulders dropped.
"I was asked to watch you."
The words were quiet.
But they hit harder than any confession.
"Watch me?"
He looked at the floor.
"Not hurt you."
"Who asked you?"
He remained silent.
I already knew.
The answer was somewhere in that silence.
"Your mother?"
His eyes moved.
That was enough.
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because suddenly everything made sense.
The comments.
The pressure.
The attempts to make me smaller.
Linda wasn't just trying to control me.
She was following a plan.
But why?
Why would my own family care so much about my career?
Why would they destroy my confidence right before my promotion?
I looked at the USB drive.
"What is this?"
Michael immediately reached for it.
I moved it away.
"No."
"Evelyn."
"No more secrets."
He stared at me.
For a moment, I saw the man I married.
The man who held my hand when my father died.
The man who promised he would always stand beside me.
Then I remembered him standing there while his mother shaved my head.
The man I loved and the man standing in front of me felt like two different people.
"I need you to understand something," he said.
"I do."
"No, you don't."
His voice broke.
"You think this is about control."
"Isn't it?"
He looked at me.
"This started before we met."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Michael looked at the photograph.
"Your father knew."
My entire body went still.
"My father knew what?"
He hesitated.
Then whispered:
"That someone would come after you."
The room felt colder.
"My father has been dead for twelve years."
"I know."
"Then explain."
Michael looked at the folder.
"Your father left something behind."
I stared at him.
"Something connected to me?"
He nodded.
I felt my heartbeat increase.
"Where is it?"
Michael didn't answer.
Instead, he walked toward the desk and opened the bottom drawer.
There was another file.
Thicker.
Older.
He placed it in front of me.
"This is why your mother-in-law hates your career."
I looked at him.
"Linda?"
He nodded.
"She knows what your father discovered."
I opened the file.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Names.
And one name appeared again and again.
A name I recognized.
But never expected to see.
My commander's name.
Commander Hayes.
I looked at Michael.
"Why is my commander connected to this?"
Before he could answer, my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
One message.
A photograph.
I opened it.
My blood turned cold.
It was a picture taken moments ago.
Inside Michael's office.
From outside the window.
The image showed me and Michael standing together.
But the person who took it wasn't outside the house.
They were inside.
May you like
Because in the reflection of the glass...
Someone was standing behind us.
