Chapter 9 - The Mother I Never Knew

The picture stayed on the phone screen.

A woman.

A newborn baby.

And four words.

She remembers everything now.

I couldn't look away.

Because the baby in the picture was Lily.

I knew her face.

The tiny fingers.

The small birthmark near her left shoulder.

Even at a few days old, I would have recognized her anywhere.

But the woman holding her...

I didn't know her.

And yet Victor had said something that made no sense.

She was yours.

My hands started shaking.

"Explain."

Nobody moved.

"Explain right now."

My voice echoed through the cabin.

Claire looked at me.

Her face was full of pain.

But she wasn't surprised.

That hurt more than anything.

"You knew."

It wasn't a question.

Claire lowered her eyes.

"I knew part of it."

"Part?"

I laughed quietly.

The sound didn't feel like me.

"My entire life is falling apart, and everyone keeps giving me pieces."

I pointed at the phone.

"Who is she?"

Claire looked at the picture.

"Her name was Emma."

The name felt strange.

Unknown.

But somehow familiar.

"Who was Emma?"

Nobody answered.

Then Alexander stepped forward.

"She was the first person involved in Genesis."

I looked at him.

"The first?"

He nodded.

"Before the company. Before the technology. Before Victor."

I felt my patience disappearing.

"Stop speaking in riddles."

Alexander looked at me.

"Emma was the reason Genesis existed."

I stared.

"Why?"

He looked at Lily.

"Because of you."

My heart stopped.

"What does that mean?"

Alexander took a breath.

"Daniel, you were part of Genesis before you even knew about it."

I shook my head.

"No."

"Yes."

"No."

The word came out harder.

Because I couldn't accept it.

My whole life.

My achievements.

My choices.

My success.

Were they even mine?

Or were they calculated?

"I built Whitmore Systems."

Alexander nodded.

"You did."

"Then how am I part of it?"

"Because you were the first test."

The cabin became silent.

I looked at Claire.

She looked away.

That was the answer.

"You knew."

She whispered:

"Yes."

I felt something inside me break.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Something worse.

Betrayal.

"Everyone knew."

Claire stepped closer.

"Daniel, listen."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You don't get to tell me to listen anymore."

She stopped.

"I spent my entire life thinking I was in control."

I looked around.

"Every decision."

"Every success."

"Every relationship."

I looked at Lily.

"And now I'm finding out my own daughter was part of a plan before she was even born."

Claire's tears fell.

"She wasn't a plan."

"Then what was she?"

Nobody answered.

Finally, Emma's name appeared again in my mind.

The woman in the picture.

The woman I had never met.

The woman who apparently had something to do with my entire life.

"Who was Emma to me?"

This time, Victor answered.

"She was your wife."

The world stopped.

I looked at him.

"What?"

Victor swallowed.

"Before Claire."

I couldn't speak.

A memory flashed.

A hospital room.

A woman crying.

A conversation I couldn't remember.

Images.

Fragments.

Like pieces of a dream.

"No."

Victor continued.

"Emma was your first wife."

Claire closed her eyes.

I turned toward her.

"You knew this?"

She whispered:

"Yes."

The pain was immediate.

Not because there was another woman.

Because there was a missing part of my own life.

"Why don't I remember her?"

Nobody answered.

Then Alexander said:

"Because you chose not to."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He stepped closer.

"After Emma died, you volunteered for memory suppression."

The words made no sense.

"I would never do that."

Alexander looked at me sadly.

"You did."

"Why?"

His answer came quietly.

"Because you couldn't live with what happened."

The airplane shook again.

But nobody reacted.

Because the storm inside my head was louder.

"What happened to her?"

Victor looked away.

Claire started crying.

And I knew.

Whatever the truth was...

everyone was afraid to say it.

"Tell me."

Victor finally spoke.

"Emma didn't die in an accident."

My heart sank.

"Then what happened?"

Victor looked at Lily.

"She sacrificed herself."

"For what?"

He looked at me.

"For you."

I stepped back.

"No."

Victor continued.

"Emma discovered what Genesis was becoming."

The system.

The company.

The control.

Everything.

"She tried to shut it down."

I listened.

"Victor helped her."

I looked at him.

"You?"

He nodded.

"I realized too late what we created."

"Then why did you let everyone believe she was dead?"

Victor's face changed.

"Because someone wanted her erased."

"Who?"

The cabin lights flickered.

Everyone looked upward.

The speakers turned on.

A voice came through.

A woman's voice.

Calm.

Cold.

"Daniel."

My blood froze.

Because I recognized it.

Not from memory.

Not from a recording.

From somewhere deeper.

The voice continued.

"You finally found the truth."

Claire immediately looked terrified.

"No."

I turned toward her.

"Who is that?"

She whispered:

"Emma."

The speakers crackled.

The voice continued.

"I know you're confused."

A pause.

"But you need to understand something."

The airplane went completely silent.

"I didn't disappear because I was afraid."

My heart raced.

"I disappeared because I discovered the person controlling Genesis."

Everyone looked at each other.

Then the voice said:

"And that person is sitting on this plane."

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The speakers clicked again.

A final message appeared on the cabin screens.

A live camera feed.

A woman appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Emma.

She looked directly into the camera.

Then she smiled sadly.

"Daniel..."

My hands went cold.

Because behind Emma...

stood someone holding Lily.

May you like

And that person slowly turned toward the camera.

Revealing a face I had trusted my entire life...
