Chapter 5 - The Man Behind My Success

The video stopped.
The screen froze on my own face.
I couldn't move.
I couldn't breathe.
Because I knew the person sitting across from my desk.
I knew his voice.
I knew his smile.
I knew the hand that had signed millions of dollars worth of contracts beside mine.
My closest friend.
My business partner.
The man who helped me build everything.
Victor Hale.
For fifteen years, Victor had been the one person I trusted without question.
He was there when my company had nothing.
He was there when investors rejected us.
He was there when we worked through nights with empty coffee cups and impossible deadlines.
Everyone called him my right hand.
I called him my brother.
But now I was watching a recording of Victor sitting in my office.
The date on the screen was two weeks before Claire disappeared.
Two weeks before my life changed forever.
The video restarted.
My younger self appeared.
Confident.
Focused.
Completely unaware.
Victor sat across from me.
"You need to understand, Daniel," Victor said in the recording, "this project cannot stay under your control forever."
I frowned.
Even watching a memory, I felt something wrong.
The way Victor spoke.
Not like a partner.
Like someone negotiating ownership.
My recorded voice answered.
"Are you saying you want to remove me from my own company?"
Victor smiled.
"No."
A pause.
"I'm saying I want to protect what we built."
The video stopped again.
The cabin was silent.
I looked at Claire.
"What is this?"
Her eyes were filled with sadness.
"Proof."
"Proof that Victor had a conversation with me?"
"No."
She stepped closer.
"Proof that he was hiding something from you."
I looked back at the screen.
I wanted to deny it.
I wanted to say there had to be another explanation.
A misunderstanding.
A missing piece.
Anything.
Because accepting the truth meant admitting I had spent fifteen years trusting the wrong person.
"How did you get this?"
Claire looked away.
"I found it."
"Where?"
"In your private server."
My expression changed.
"Impossible."
"I know."
"Nobody has access to that."
Claire looked directly at me.
"Someone did."
The words felt heavier than they should have.
Because my company had always been my fortress.
Every system.
Every security layer.
Every employee.
I personally approved.
I built everything around control.
And somehow, someone had been inside without me knowing.
The pilot stepped forward.
"Now you understand why Claire couldn't come to you."
I turned toward him.
"You."
His expression remained calm.
"I know you have questions."
"Who are you?"
"My name is Adrian Cole."
The name meant nothing.
But Claire's reaction did.
Her face tightened.
Like she recognized him.
"You know him."
She didn't answer.
That was enough.
"Claire."
She finally looked at me.
"Adrian helped me disappear."
The anger came instantly.
"You worked with him?"
"Daniel—"
"No."
I shook my head.
"Everyone knew something except me."
My voice became louder.
"Ethan knew."
"Adrian knew."
"You knew."
I looked down at Lily.
"And I was the only person raising our daughter while everyone protected their secrets."
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
"I was protecting you."
I looked at her.
"From what?"
She hesitated.
"From becoming the next victim."
The cabin went quiet.
The word stayed between us.
Victim.
I looked at Adrian.
"Who is behind this?"
He didn't answer.
Instead, he looked toward the cockpit.
"We need to land."
I stared at him.
"What?"
"The situation changed."
"Explain."
Adrian looked at Claire.
"They know she is here."
My stomach dropped.
"Who?"
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan looked at the passengers.
His face changed.
"Too late."
I followed his eyes.
The man who had been sleeping near the window was no longer sleeping.
The businessman with the laptop was no longer working.
The couple watching a movie were no longer watching anything.
Three people.
Three strangers.
All looking directly at us.
My instincts finally caught up.
They weren't passengers.
They were waiting.
Claire moved closer.
"Daniel, listen to me."
Her voice was different now.
Not scared.
Focused.
"Whatever happens, don't let them separate you from Lily."
I held my daughter tighter.
"What exactly is Lily?"
Claire looked at me.
And for the first time since she appeared...
I saw hesitation.
A fear deeper than anything before.
"Daniel..."
"What?"
She swallowed.
"Your daughter was born with information someone spent years trying to obtain."
I stared at her.
"What information?"
Before she could answer, the airplane speakers suddenly turned on.
A voice came through.
The captain.
"Attention passengers, we are experiencing a minor technical issue. Please remain seated."
But something was wrong.
The voice didn't sound like the captain from before.
It sounded recorded.
Adrian noticed too.
He immediately moved toward the cockpit.
The door was locked.
He tried the handle.
Nothing.
"Someone took control of the cabin system."
My heart raced.
"Can they control the plane?"
"No."
A pause.
"Not yet."
That answer was not comforting.
I looked at Claire.
"What did Victor want?"
She took a deep breath.
"The company you built wasn't just a technology company."
I waited.
She continued.
"When you created Whitmore Systems, you developed a security network that could predict human behavior."
I frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
"A system that could analyze patterns. Decisions. Risks."
I shook my head.
"That project was canceled."
Claire looked at me.
"No, Daniel."
My blood went cold.
"It was renamed."
The pieces started connecting.
The unusual government contracts.
The private investors.
The strange requests from Victor.
Things I ignored because I trusted him.
"What did he turn it into?"
Claire looked at Lily.
"A system that could predict people before they acted."
I stared at her.
"And my daughter?"
Claire's voice became barely a whisper.
"She was the only person who could access it."
I felt like the air had disappeared.
"That makes no sense."
"It does."
She looked at me.
"Because the system wasn't built around machines."
A pause.
"It was built around genetics."
I looked at Lily.
My daughter.
Six months old.
The person I thought I was protecting.
The person everyone was fighting over.
A sudden sound interrupted us.
A phone ringing.
Not from a passenger.
Not from a crew member.
From my seat.
I looked down.
My phone.
The one I had turned off before the flight.
It was ringing.
The screen showed a number I didn't recognize.
Everyone froze.
Ethan whispered:
"Don't answer."
But I already knew.
Someone wanted me to answer.
I picked up.
For three seconds, there was only silence.
Then a voice spoke.
A voice I recognized.
A voice that should have been impossible.
"Daniel."
My hands went cold.
Because it wasn't Victor.
It wasn't Claire.
It wasn't anyone on this plane.
It was my own voice.
Older.
Distorted.
Terrified.
The recording continued.
"If you're hearing this, it means I failed."
I stopped breathing.
The entire cabin disappeared.
My future self was speaking to me.
May you like
Then the voice whispered one final sentence:
"Whatever you do, don't let Lily meet the person who is about to open the cockpit door..."
