Chapter 4 - The Wife Who Was Supposed To Be Gone

"Daniel."

I forgot how that voice sounded.

Not because I hadn't heard it before.

Because I had spent months trying not to remember.

The red emergency lights moved across her face.

Every memory I buried came back at once.

The nights we stayed awake talking about our future.

The first time she held Lily.

The way she used to laugh when I came home too late from work.

The way she looked at me the last morning before she disappeared.

I had imagined this moment a thousand times.

I imagined screaming.

I imagined demanding answers.

I imagined asking why she left me alone with a newborn child.

But when Claire stood in front of me...

I couldn't say anything.

I just stared.

My wife was alive.

The woman I mourned was standing three feet away from me.

"Lily..."

Her voice broke when she said our daughter's name.

And that was when I noticed something.

Claire wasn't looking at me.

She was looking at Lily.

Like she had been waiting months for this moment.

Like she had missed every second.

My hands tightened around my daughter.

A strange mixture of emotions hit me.

Relief.

Anger.

Confusion.

Fear.

All at the same time.

"Don't."

My voice surprised even me.

Claire looked at me.

"Daniel..."

"Don't say my name like nothing happened."

The words came out colder than I expected.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I know."

"No, you don't."

The cabin was silent.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Even the passengers who had been watching earlier looked away.

They could feel something bigger was happening.

Something personal.

Something painful.

Claire lowered her voice.

"I never wanted to leave."

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"You vanished."

"I had no choice."

"You left me with a six-month-old baby."

"I know."

"You made me believe you abandoned us."

Her expression changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

"That was the only way to keep Lily alive."

The sentence stopped me.

"What?"

Claire looked around.

Her eyes moved toward the people in first class.

Then toward the aisle.

Then back to me.

"We don't have much time."

I hated that sentence.

Everyone kept saying that.

No time.

Danger.

Trust nobody.

But nobody explained anything.

I stood up slowly.

"Then explain."

Claire looked at Ethan.

Something passed between them.

A silent conversation.

I noticed.

And I hated that too.

"You knew he was here," I said.

Claire looked down.

"Yes."

My jaw tightened.

"You sent him?"

"No."

"Then why does he know everything?"

Ethan stepped closer.

"Because Claire contacted me before she disappeared."

I looked between them.

"So both of you knew the truth."

Neither answered.

That silence hurt.

More than any explanation could.

I had spent months alone.

Months raising Lily.

Months wondering if my family was broken because of something I did.

And two people standing in front of me knew why.

"You let me suffer."

Claire's face collapsed.

"No."

"That's exactly what happened."

She stepped closer.

"I was trying to protect you."

"By disappearing?"

"Yes."

The honesty of that answer shocked me.

She didn't defend herself.

She didn't apologize.

She simply admitted it.

And somehow that made it harder.

The baby in my arms moved.

Claire immediately stopped.

She didn't reach out.

She didn't try to take Lily.

She just looked at her.

Like she didn't deserve to touch her.

That broke something inside me.

Because despite everything...

she was still Lily's mother.

"She knows my voice," Claire whispered.

I looked at her.

"What?"

"She knows my voice."

Claire smiled sadly.

"Every night before I left, I sang the same song to her."

My eyes moved to Lily.

My daughter was staring at Claire.

Quiet.

Curious.

Like some part of her remembered.

I wanted to be angry.

I needed to be angry.

But seeing Claire look at our daughter made that impossible.

"Why did you leave the letter?"

Claire looked at Ethan.

Then at me.

"Because I knew eventually they would find you."

"Who?"

She didn't answer.

Again.

That silence.

I stepped closer.

"Claire."

Her eyes met mine.

"The people who are after us are not trying to hurt you."

My heart dropped.

"Then what do they want?"

She looked at Lily.

"They want her."

The airplane suddenly felt too small.

I pulled Lily closer.

"No."

Claire nodded.

"I know."

"Who are they?"

"I don't know everyone involved."

"You expect me to believe that?"

"Daniel, listen to me."

Her voice became urgent.

"There are people inside your company who have been tracking your family since before Lily was born."

I thought about Ethan's words.

Someone inside my company.

I remembered the silver pin.

The picture.

The man behind Claire.

"Why?"

Claire swallowed.

"Because Lily isn't just your daughter."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Claire looked at Ethan.

He reached into his backpack.

This time, he pulled out a small black device.

A tiny storage drive.

"What is that?"

Claire answered.

"Proof."

"Of what?"

Her eyes locked onto mine.

"That your company wasn't built the way you think it was."

I felt anger rising.

"Don't do that."

"Do what?"

"Don't stand here and tell me my entire life is a lie."

Claire looked at me.

"I wish it wasn't."

The words hurt because she sounded like she believed them.

A sudden noise came from the front of the plane.

A click.

A door opening.

Everyone looked toward the cockpit area.

The flight attendant who had approached us earlier was gone.

But someone else was standing there.

A man.

Tall.

Wearing a pilot uniform.

He looked directly at me.

Not the passengers.

Not the crew.

Me.

"Mr. Whitmore."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Claire's face changed immediately.

She stepped in front of Lily.

"No."

The pilot smiled.

"I was wondering when you would finally bring her back."

My blood turned cold.

"Who are you?"

The man ignored me.

He looked at Claire.

"You made this much harder than it needed to be."

Ethan moved closer.

"Everyone stay seated."

The pilot looked amused.

"Still protecting them, Ethan?"

My eyes moved between them.

"You know him?"

Ethan didn't answer.

The pilot smiled.

Then he reached into his jacket.

Claire whispered:

"Daniel, get down."

I grabbed Lily.

The cabin lights flickered again.

The pilot pulled something from his pocket.

Not a weapon.

A phone.

He pressed the screen.

Then placed it on the nearest seat.

The display lit up.

A video started playing.

My own face appeared.

A recording.

From inside my office.

From months ago.

Before Claire disappeared.

I watched myself talking to someone.

Someone sitting across from my desk.

Someone I trusted.

Then the camera angle changed.

And I saw the person sitting in my office.

My breathing stopped.

Because it was the one person I never suspected.

The pilot looked at me and whispered:

"Now you can see who really betrayed you."

The video paused.

May you like

The door to the cockpit slowly opened.

And the person in the recording stepped out...
