Chapter 7 - The Birth Certificate That Changed Everything

The person standing in front of me was holding Lily's birth certificate.

But it wasn't the paper that terrified me.

It was the person holding it.

My brother.

Alexander Whitmore.

My older brother.

The man I thought had died eight years ago.

For a moment, my brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

No.

It couldn't be him.

I watched him lower the paper slowly.

His face looked different.

Older.

Tired.

But the scar above his eyebrow was the same.

The scar he got when we were kids.

The scar I remembered because I was the one who pushed him into the tree while we were playing.

"Alex?"

My voice barely came out.

The entire cabin became silent.

Claire looked at him.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Fear.

"You can't be here."

Alexander smiled sadly.

"That's exactly what everyone wanted you to believe."

I couldn't move.

Eight years.

Eight years since the accident.

Eight years since the car crash that took my brother away.

I remembered the funeral.

The empty coffin.

The calls from the hospital.

The moment I was told there was nothing they could do.

I remembered standing there, unable to cry.

Because part of me believed it was impossible.

My brother couldn't be gone.

And now he was standing in front of me.

Alive.

Holding my daughter's birth certificate.

"Explain."

My voice was cold.

Alexander looked at Claire.

Then Ethan.

Then Victor.

"You have all been protecting pieces of the truth."

He looked back at me.

"But nobody protected you from the biggest lie."

I stepped forward.

"What lie?"

Alexander looked down at Lily.

"That she was born naturally."

My expression changed.

"What?"

Claire immediately moved.

"Alex, stop."

But he continued.

"Daniel, your daughter wasn't part of the system."

He lifted the birth certificate.

"She was created because of it."

The words felt impossible.

I looked at Claire.

"What is he talking about?"

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"I was going to tell you."

"When?"

She didn't answer.

"When she turned eighteen?"

"Daniel—"

"No."

My voice cracked.

"No more secrets."

Lily started moving in my arms.

She felt my tension.

She began crying softly.

The sound broke something inside me.

Because no matter what was happening around us...

she was still just a baby.

My baby.

I turned away from everyone.

"I need the truth."

Alexander nodded.

"You deserve it."

He placed the birth certificate on the empty seat.

"Before Lily was born, your company created a program called Genesis."

I looked at him.

"I've heard of the prediction system."

"No."

Alexander shook his head.

"That was the cover."

He paused.

"Genesis wasn't created to predict people."

"Then what was it?"

His eyes moved to Lily.

"It was created to understand them."

I frowned.

"That's not different."

"It is."

He stepped closer.

"The system couldn't predict human behavior because humans are unpredictable."

A pause.

"So they changed the approach."

My stomach tightened.

"What approach?"

"They started studying what creates human decisions."

I looked at the birth certificate.

"No."

Alexander nodded.

"Yes."

I felt anger rising.

"You experimented on my daughter?"

"No."

His answer was immediate.

"Never."

"Then explain."

Alexander looked at Claire.

"She wasn't an experiment."

Claire closed her eyes.

"She was the only successful result."

I stared at my wife.

My wife.

The woman I loved.

The woman who disappeared.

"What does that mean?"

Claire wiped her tears.

"When I was pregnant with Lily, Victor discovered something."

I looked at Victor.

He remained silent.

"He discovered that the system had a limitation," Claire continued.

"What limitation?"

"It could analyze millions of people."

A pause.

"But it couldn't understand love."

I didn't speak.

Claire continued.

"Every decision humans make is influenced by emotion. Fear. Attachment. Loyalty. Sacrifice."

She looked at Lily.

"The system couldn't calculate those things."

Alexander finished:

"Until Lily."

I felt my chest tighten.

"No."

Alexander looked at me.

"Daniel, your daughter has a unique genetic marker."

"Stop."

"It allows the system to map emotional responses."

"Stop."

"She was born with the ability to complete what Genesis started."

I turned away.

I couldn't listen anymore.

Because every word sounded like someone was taking my daughter away from me.

She wasn't a system.

She wasn't technology.

She wasn't a solution.

She was Lily.

My daughter.

The baby who grabbed my finger.

The baby who cried because she wanted her father.

I looked at Claire.

"Did you know?"

The silence answered.

My heart broke.

"Did you know?"

Claire whispered:

"Yes."

I closed my eyes.

The pain was worse than anger.

Because anger was easier.

Betrayal hurt differently.

"How long?"

"Since before she was born."

I stepped back.

"So everyone knew."

"No."

Claire moved toward me.

"I didn't know everything."

"But you knew enough."

She stopped.

"I was trying to protect her."

"By hiding her from me?"

"No."

Her voice broke.

"By hiding her from them."

She pointed toward Alexander.

"From Victor."

"From everyone who wanted to use her."

I looked at Alexander.

"And you?"

He looked down.

"I helped create Genesis."

The confession hit harder than anything.

My own brother.

"My brother created the thing that destroyed my family?"

Alexander looked at me.

"I created it because I thought it would save people."

A bitter smile crossed his face.

"I was wrong."

The airplane suddenly shook again.

Harder.

The emergency lights flashed.

A warning alarm echoed.

Everyone grabbed their seats.

Adrian rushed toward the cockpit.

"The autopilot is locked."

Victor looked at him.

"Can you override it?"

"No."

A pause.

"Someone changed the security protocol."

Everyone looked at Alexander.

Because he was the only person who hadn't explained himself.

I stared at him.

"Was it you?"

His face changed.

Pain.

Not guilt.

Pain.

"No."

"Then who?"

Nobody answered.

Then my phone vibrated.

A new message.

Unknown number.

I looked down.

One sentence.

You finally found the missing piece.

My blood ran cold.

Another message appeared.

Now watch what happens when you lose her.

I looked up immediately.

"Where's Lily?"

Everyone froze.

My arms tightened.

But something was wrong.

The weight against my chest felt different.

Too light.

I looked down.

My heart stopped.

The blanket was still there.

My hands were still holding it.

But Lily...

was gone.

I turned around.

Panic exploded through me.

"Claire!"

Everyone started moving.

Searching.

The cabin erupted.

Passengers shouted.

Ethan looked under the seats.

Victor ran toward the aisle.

Adrian blocked the cockpit.

And Alexander stood completely still.

Staring at something on the floor.

A tiny pink bracelet.

Lily's bracelet.

Beside it was a note.

Three words.

May you like

Written in my handwriting.

I took her.
