Chapter 8 - The Woman Who Was Never Dead

"Arthur."
The voice came through the phone.
Cold.
Calm.
Familiar.
Arthur Whitmore froze.
For the first time since I saw him standing on the runway, he looked afraid.
Not annoyed.
Not angry.
Afraid.
Everyone noticed.
Victoria stepped back.
Ethan's face changed.
Even Adrian looked shocked.
I stared at the phone in Arthur's hand.
"Who is that?"
Arthur didn't answer.
The voice came again.
"You should have let me stay dead."
My heart stopped.
Because I knew that voice.
I had heard it before.
Not recently.
Years ago.
In old recordings.
In family videos.
In memories I tried to forget.
I looked at Victoria.
Her face was completely pale.
"No..."
The phone slipped slightly in Arthur's hand.
"That's impossible."
The voice laughed softly.
"Isn't that what you always said?"
Arthur looked around.
Like he was searching for an escape.
But there was nowhere to go.
The runway was surrounded.
The truth had finally caught him.
I stepped forward.
"Who is it?"
Arthur looked at me.
For a second...
He looked like my father again.
Not the powerful man.
Not the person controlling everything.
Just my father.
A man who knew his biggest secret was about to be exposed.
Then the voice spoke.
"Daniel."
My body froze.
Because the person on the phone knew my name.
"Your father spent years making sure you never heard from me."
I grabbed the phone from Arthur's hand.
He didn't stop me.
That scared me.
I held it close.
"Who are you?"
Silence.
Then:
"Someone your father tried to erase."
I looked at Victoria.
"Who?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Daniel..."
I turned toward her.
"You know."
She looked down.
"I know who it is."
My chest tightened.
"Tell me."
Victoria swallowed.
Then whispered:
"Your mother."
The world became silent.
My mother.
A woman I had buried in my memory.
A woman who died when I was fifteen.
A woman whose picture was still inside my house.
A woman my father never talked about.
A woman everyone said was gone.
I brought the phone back to my ear.
"Mom?"
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then the voice answered.
"Yes, Daniel."
My knees almost gave out.
I had imagined hearing that voice thousands of times.
In dreams.
In memories.
In moments when life became too difficult and I wanted someone older to tell me everything would be okay.
But I never imagined hearing it like this.
After all these years.
Hidden.
Through a phone.
While my dead father stood in front of me.
"You're alive."
The words came out broken.
"Yes."
"Why?"
The silence afterward hurt.
Because I already knew the answer would destroy something.
"Because your father made me disappear."
Arthur finally spoke.
"Enough."
Everyone turned.
His voice was different now.
No confidence.
No control.
Only anger.
My mother answered immediately.
"You don't get to silence me anymore."
Arthur looked at the ground.
I watched him.
The man who controlled companies.
The man who manipulated everyone around him.
The man who convinced the world he was dead.
Was now afraid of one voice.
My mother's voice.
"Where are you?"
I asked.
"I can't tell you."
"Why?"
"Because if I tell you, Arthur will find me."
I looked at Arthur.
"He already found me."
"No."
Her voice became urgent.
"Daniel, listen carefully."
I held the phone tighter.
"Your father isn't the only person you should fear."
Everyone became still.
"What does that mean?"
My mother took a breath.
"Arthur didn't create the system alone."
I looked at Adrian.
Then Victoria.
Then Ethan.
"Who helped him?"
Another silence.
Then she said:
"Someone you trust."
The words hit harder than anything else.
Someone I trust.
My mind immediately searched.
Emma.
Victoria.
Ethan.
Adrian.
Everyone had lied.
Everyone had hidden things.
Everyone was possible.
I looked at Emma.
She looked away.
And that hurt more than I expected.
"Who?"
My mother didn't answer.
Instead, she asked:
"Is Lily with you?"
I looked down.
My daughter was asleep in my arms.
"Yes."
A shaky breath came through the phone.
"Thank God."
"Why?"
"Because Lily is the reason they started everything."
I felt cold.
"What do you mean?"
My mother lowered her voice.
"Daniel, Lily isn't just a child."
I stared at my daughter.
"What are you saying?"
"She carries the final piece."
Nobody moved.
The final piece.
Of what?
I looked at Arthur.
His face changed.
He knew.
"Arthur."
My father's eyes met mine.
"What did you do?"
He didn't answer.
That was enough.
I stepped toward him.
"You used my daughter."
"No."
His response was immediate.
"Everything I did was to protect her."
I laughed.
"Protect her?"
I looked around.
"Everyone around me lied because they were protecting me."
I pointed at Lily.
"Everyone decided what was best for her."
My voice broke.
"But nobody asked what she needed."
Emma started crying.
"I was trying to save her."
I looked at her.
"From who?"
Nobody answered.
The airport security team moved closer.
But Ethan stopped them.
"Wait."
I looked at him.
"Why?"
His eyes were on Arthur.
"Because he isn't the biggest threat here."
My stomach tightened.
"What are you talking about?"
Ethan looked toward the private hangar.
A black SUV had arrived.
Nobody noticed it before.
The doors opened.
Three people stepped out.
One of them carried a small device.
Another held a folder.
The third person...
Made Victoria stop breathing.
Because she recognized him.
"That's impossible."
I followed her gaze.
A man walked toward us.
Older.
Gray hair.
Expensive suit.
A familiar face.
Not because I knew him.
Because I had seen him before.
In my father's office.
In company meetings.
In pictures from years ago.
The man who stood beside Arthur in every important moment.
Adrian looked terrified.
"No."
I turned toward him.
"Who is he?"
Adrian whispered:
"The person who actually built everything."
The man stopped a few feet away.
He looked at Lily.
Then at me.
Then smiled.
"Daniel Whitmore."
His voice was calm.
Almost friendly.
"I've been waiting a very long time to meet you."
Arthur stepped forward.
"Leave him alone."
The man laughed.
"Still pretending you are the father who protected him?"
Arthur's face changed.
The man looked at me.
"Your father didn't tell you the truth."
He opened the folder.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of me.
As a child.
Standing beside another boy.
A boy who looked exactly like me.
But that wasn't what made me freeze.
It was the writing on the back of the photograph.
Three words.
May you like
Words that changed everything.
"Subject One survived."
