Chapter 4 - The Man Who Carried My Father’s Name

"Arthur Whitmore."

The name echoed through the airplane cabin.

My father's name.

A name I had not heard spoken by another person in years.

I stared at the man standing in front of me.

The stranger from my memories.

The stranger from my nightmares.

Because he looked exactly like the photographs.

The same sharp eyes.

The same cold smile.

The same face I had seen beside my father at family events when I was a child.

But that was impossible.

My father had been dead for twelve years.

And this man was not old enough to be him.

I tightened my arms around Lily.

"Who are you?"

The man smiled.

"That is the question you should have asked a long time ago."

My jaw tightened.

"I asked you who you are."

He took another step forward.

Ethan immediately moved in front of me.

"Don't come any closer."

The man's smile disappeared.

"Still protecting him, Ethan?"

Ethan's expression changed.

Like he had heard a voice from a past he hated.

"You don't belong here."

The man looked around the cabin.

"Neither did Victoria."

Victoria stood frozen beside Emma.

Her face had lost all emotion.

That scared me more than anything.

Because Victoria was not afraid easily.

She was the kind of person who could walk into a room full of powerful executives and make everyone listen.

But now...

She looked like she was seeing a ghost.

I looked at her.

"Tell me who he is."

Victoria didn't answer.

"Victoria."

Her eyes moved to mine.

Then to Lily.

Then back to the man.

"He is Adrian Whitmore."

The name hit me.

Whitmore.

My family name.

I looked at Adrian.

"What does that mean?"

He laughed quietly.

"It means your father had more secrets than you ever knew."

My stomach turned.

"My father?"

Adrian nodded.

"Arthur Whitmore was not the man you thought he was."

I felt anger rise inside me.

Nobody talked about my father like that.

Not after everything he had done for me.

Not after raising me.

Not after building the foundation of my life.

"You don't know anything about him."

Adrian looked at me.

"I knew him better than you did."

The words cut deeper than I expected.

Because part of me feared they were true.

My father had always been complicated.

A brilliant businessman.

A loving parent.

But also a man who disappeared for days without explanation.

A man who locked his office door every night.

A man who told me some questions were too dangerous to ask.

I had spent years convincing myself those memories didn't matter.

Now they were standing in front of me.

Alive.

Breathing.

Waiting.

Emma stepped closer.

"Daniel, we need to listen."

I looked at her.

"How long?"

She lowered her eyes.

"How long what?"

"How long have you known about him?"

Silence.

That was her answer.

I felt something inside me crack.

"Emma."

She whispered:

"Three months before we got married."

I stared at her.

Three months.

She had known.

For years.

"You knew Victoria was alive."

A tear rolled down her face.

"Yes."

"You knew Lily had another mother."

"Yes."

"And you knew about him."

She closed her eyes.

"Yes."

I turned away.

I couldn't look at her.

Not because I hated her.

Because I didn't understand how someone I loved could carry something so enormous and still wake up beside me every morning.

Adrian watched silently.

Then he spoke.

"You think Emma betrayed you."

I looked at him.

"Did she not?"

"No."

He looked at Lily.

"She saved you."

I frowned.

"What?"

Adrian stepped closer.

"Six months ago, Victoria discovered someone inside Whitmore Technologies was trying to access Lily's records."

My heart stopped.

"My daughter's records?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Victoria spoke.

"Because Lily was born with something they wanted."

I looked at her.

"What?"

Victoria hesitated.

"Information."

I almost laughed.

"She's a baby."

"I know."

Victoria's voice broke.

"That's why I knew something was wrong."

The plane shook again.

Harder this time.

The passengers gasped.

The lights flickered.

A flight attendant rushed toward the cockpit.

Adrian didn't even react.

Like he expected it.

"What is happening?"

Ethan looked at him.

"You did this."

Adrian smiled.

"No."

He looked at me.

"Someone else did."

A notification sound came from my phone.

I hadn't even realized I still had it in my pocket.

I looked down.

One new message.

Unknown number.

My hands went cold.

I opened it.

There was a picture.

A picture of Lily.

Taken today.

On this airplane.

My breathing stopped.

Because whoever sent it had been close enough to take it.

The message underneath was only six words.

"Ask Emma who Lily's father is."

I looked at my wife.

Her face changed instantly.

Not confusion.

Not fear.

Recognition.

"Emma..."

She stepped back.

"Daniel, don't."

My heart started racing.

"Don't what?"

She looked at Adrian.

Then Victoria.

Then Ethan.

And finally at me.

"I was hoping you would never have to know."

The airplane suddenly dropped.

People screamed.

Oxygen masks began falling from the ceiling.

The cabin became chaos.

But I only heard one thing.

My wife's voice.

Because she whispered the secret that changed everything.

"Daniel..."

She looked at Lily.

"Your daughter isn't only Victoria's child."

I couldn't breathe.

"What are you saying?"

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

"She's yours."

The world stopped.

I looked at Lily.

My baby.

My daughter.

The child I had loved since the moment I held her.

Then Emma finished the sentence.

The sentence she had been afraid to say for six months.

"Because Daniel..."

She pointed at Adrian.

May you like

"He is the reason you never knew you had a twin brother..."

And behind Adrian, the airplane bathroom door slowly opened.
