Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

"Daniel Whitmore."
The voice came from behind me.
Soft.
Calm.
Almost familiar.
But impossible.
I turned slowly.
Every person in the first-class cabin was watching.
A woman stood at the end of the aisle.
She was wearing a dark coat.
Her hair was pulled back.
Her face was older than I remembered.
But there was no mistake.
I knew her.
Even after six years.
Even after the funeral.
Even after I watched them lower a coffin into the ground.
"Victoria."
The name escaped my mouth before I could stop it.
Emma grabbed my arm.
Her fingers were shaking.
The woman smiled sadly.
"Hello, Daniel."
My entire body froze.
Because Victoria Hale was dead.
I knew it.
The world knew it.
Her company announced it.
Her family announced it.
The news reported it.
A plane crash.
A missing aircraft.
No survivors.
That was the story.
That was the truth I had accepted.
Until now.
I looked at Emma.
Then at Ethan.
Neither of them looked surprised.
And that was the moment something inside me broke.
They had known.
Both of them.
They had known she was alive.
"Emma."
My voice was quiet.
But everyone heard the anger underneath.
"When?"
Emma looked down.
"I was going to tell you."
"When?"
She swallowed.
"Before Lily was born."
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"Before Lily was born?"
I looked around the airplane.
Strangers were watching my life collapse in front of them.
"My wife knew a woman I thought was dead was alive, and she decided not to tell me?"
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
"Daniel, listen to me."
"No."
I shook my head.
"No, you listen to me."
Lily moved slightly in my arms.
I immediately lowered my voice.
Because no matter what was happening...
She was still my daughter.
My little girl.
And she was the only innocent person in that cabin.
Victoria stepped closer.
"She's mine."
The words hit harder than anything else.
I looked at her.
"What?"
Her eyes moved to Lily.
"She is my daughter."
The cabin became silent.
I felt like the floor disappeared.
I looked down at Lily.
Then back at Victoria.
"No."
My voice was barely a whisper.
"No."
Victoria didn't look angry.
She looked heartbroken.
"I never wanted you to find out this way."
I stared at Emma.
The woman who had stood beside me through everything.
The woman who held my hand when Lily was born.
The woman I believed was my family.
"Tell me she's lying."
Emma didn't answer.
That was enough.
I felt something break inside my chest.
Not anger.
Not betrayal.
Something worse.
Confusion.
Because every memory I had suddenly became a question.
The first time I held Lily.
The first night I stayed awake watching her sleep.
The first time she called me Daddy.
Were those moments real?
Or was I living inside someone else's secret?
Ethan stepped between us.
"Daniel, you need to understand what happened."
I looked at him.
"Do I?"
My voice was cold.
"Because from where I'm standing, three people lied to me."
Victoria looked away.
"I was trying to protect her."
I looked at Lily.
"From me?"
"No."
Victoria's answer came quickly.
"From them."
I frowned.
"Them?"
Ethan looked toward the cabin entrance.
The flight attendant was still standing there.
Watching.
Waiting.
"What does that mean?"
Victoria took a deep breath.
"It means the accident wasn't an accident."
Everything went quiet.
I stared at her.
"What are you talking about?"
Six years ago.
Victoria Hale was one of the most powerful women in the technology world.
She was my closest business partner.
My best friend.
And according to everyone...
A victim.
But now she was standing in front of me.
Alive.
"Someone wanted me gone," she said.
"Who?"
She looked at Emma.
Then at Ethan.
Then at me.
"The same person who wants Lily."
A cold feeling moved through me.
I pulled Lily closer.
"No one is taking my daughter."
Victoria's expression softened.
"I know."
"Then explain."
She looked at the photograph in my hand.
"The woman you saw beside my hospital bed wasn't a random person."
I looked down.
The picture.
The newborn baby.
Victoria.
And another woman standing beside them.
"Who was she?"
Victoria hesitated.
Then whispered:
"Your mother."
My heart stopped.
I stared at her.
"My mother died when I was a teenager."
"I know what you were told."
Victoria stepped closer.
"But your mother was involved in something bigger than you ever knew."
I shook my head.
"No."
"Daniel..."
"No."
I looked at Emma.
"How long have you known about this?"
Emma wiped her tears.
"Since before we met."
That sentence hurt more than anything.
Before we met.
Meaning my entire marriage had started with a secret.
I lowered my voice.
"Why did you marry me?"
Emma looked devastated.
"Because I loved you."
I wanted to believe her.
I really did.
But my entire life had changed in less than ten minutes.
A dead woman was alive.
My wife knew.
My daughter had another mother.
And someone wanted Lily.
The plane suddenly shook.
Hard.
Passengers grabbed their seats.
A warning light flashed above the cabin.
The flight attendant immediately moved toward the cockpit.
Ethan looked at Victoria.
"He's here."
Victoria's face changed.
"How?"
"He tracked the signal."
My eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
Nobody answered.
And that scared me more.
Because they weren't protecting me from the truth.
They were protecting me from a person.
A person they all feared.
The cabin lights dimmed.
The captain's voice came through the speakers.
"Passengers, please remain seated."
But nobody listened.
Everyone could feel something was wrong.
I looked toward the aisle.
A man was walking slowly toward us.
Not rushing.
Not hiding.
Just walking.
Like he owned the airplane.
Victoria saw him.
And whispered:
"Daniel..."
I turned.
"Who is that?"
Her face went pale.
"He's the reason I disappeared."
The man stopped several rows away.
He looked directly at me.
Then at Lily.
And smiled.
A smile that made my blood turn cold.
Because I recognized him.
Not from the past.
Not from the news.
But from the one place I never expected.
My own family photographs.
The man lifted his hand.
May you like
And said my father's name...
"Arthur Whitmore."
