Chapter 7 - The Father Who Never Died

"Daniel, bring me my daughter."

The words froze everyone.

My hands tightened around Lily.

Not because I was afraid of the man outside.

Because I finally understood.

Everything led back to him.

My father.

Arthur Whitmore.

The man who taught me how to build an empire.

The man who taught me never to trust anyone completely.

The man who disappeared from my life when I needed him most.

The man I buried.

Was alive.

Standing twenty feet away.

Waiting for my daughter.

"Daniel."

Emma's voice was shaking.

I looked at her.

She looked terrified.

Not of Arthur.

Of what would happen if he got Lily.

"Don't give her to him."

I turned back toward the runway.

Arthur stood beside the black vehicle.

Older than I remembered.

His hair was gray.

His face had more lines.

But his eyes were exactly the same.

Cold.

Calculating.

Watching everything.

Like he already knew what everyone would do.

The airplane stairs lowered completely.

Security personnel surrounded us.

But nobody moved.

Because nobody knew who they were supposed to protect us from.

"Mr. Whitmore."

One of the airport security officers approached.

"Please remain inside the aircraft until we confirm the situation."

Arthur looked at him.

Then smiled.

The officer immediately stopped.

I noticed.

Everyone reacted to Arthur.

Even strangers.

That scared me.

Because it meant this wasn't just my family's secret.

This was bigger.

Arthur looked directly at me.

"Daniel."

Hearing my name from him felt wrong.

Like hearing a voice from a grave.

I stepped forward slightly.

"What do you want?"

He smiled.

"You already know."

"No."

My voice became harder.

"I don't know anything anymore."

For the first time...

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Disappointment.

"You still blame yourself."

I froze.

"What?"

Arthur looked at Lily.

"You think all of this happened because you failed to see the truth."

I said nothing.

Because he was right about one thing.

A part of me had been blaming myself since the moment I found out.

I was the billionaire who could predict markets.

The man who could see problems before they happened.

Yet I couldn't see the lies inside my own home.

Arthur continued.

"But you were never supposed to know."

My eyes narrowed.

"Know what?"

He looked at Emma.

Then Victoria.

Then Adrian.

"That your entire life was designed."

The words hit me.

Designed.

Not lived.

Designed.

"What does that mean?"

Arthur stepped closer.

"Your company."

A pause.

"Your marriage."

Another pause.

"Your daughter."

My heart dropped.

"No."

Arthur looked at me.

"You think you became successful because you were smarter than everyone else."

He shook his head.

"You became successful because I made sure you did."

I felt anger rise.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"I don't expect you to believe anything."

His voice remained calm.

"I expect you to remember."

A cold silence filled the runway.

I looked at Adrian.

"My twin brother."

Adrian looked away.

Arthur noticed.

"You told him?"

Adrian didn't answer.

I looked between them.

"You knew."

Arthur smiled.

"Adrian always struggled with secrets."

I stared at the man who claimed to be my father.

"Why?"

He looked at Lily.

"Because Sarah is not the only child who was hidden."

My breathing stopped.

"What?"

Emma grabbed my arm.

"Daniel."

But I pulled away.

"No."

I looked at Arthur.

"No more."

My voice shook.

"You don't get to appear after twelve years and speak like you own my life."

Arthur stared at me.

And for a second...

I saw something I hadn't seen since childhood.

A father.

Not a businessman.

Not a mastermind.

A father.

But it disappeared quickly.

"You have no idea what I sacrificed to keep you alive."

I laughed.

A bitter sound.

"You were dead."

Arthur nodded.

"That was the sacrifice."

Nobody spoke.

The wind moved across the runway.

The entire world felt unreal.

Victoria stepped forward.

"Arthur."

He looked at her.

"You should have stayed away."

Victoria's face hardened.

"I survived because you failed."

Arthur smiled.

"No."

He looked at Lily.

"You survived because I allowed it."

Ethan immediately moved.

"That's enough."

Arthur looked at him.

"You still carry that guilt, don't you?"

Ethan froze.

Arthur smiled.

"The night you lost Sarah."

My eyes moved to Ethan.

"What did he mean?"

Ethan looked away.

"Daniel..."

"What happened?"

Nobody answered.

Then Arthur said:

"Ethan was supposed to protect both children."

My stomach tightened.

"What children?"

Arthur looked at Lily.

"Your daughters."

I felt sick.

"Where is Sarah?"

Arthur's expression became serious.

"Safe."

"Where?"

"Somewhere your enemies cannot reach her."

I stepped closer.

"You mean somewhere you control."

Arthur didn't deny it.

That was the answer.

The security officers started moving toward Arthur.

He didn't react.

Instead, he reached into his coat.

Everyone immediately tensed.

But he only pulled out a small device.

A phone.

He pressed the screen.

Then held it up.

A video appeared.

A little girl.

About six months old.

Sleeping peacefully.

My breath stopped.

Because she had my eyes.

Even through the screen...

I knew.

That was my daughter.

Sarah.

I moved closer.

"Let me see her."

Arthur lowered the phone.

"Come with me."

"No."

His eyes became colder.

"Then you will never see her again."

Emma stepped between us.

"Arthur, please."

He looked at her.

"You made your choice."

Emma shook her head.

"I was trying to protect them."

"No."

Arthur's voice became quiet.

"You were trying to protect Daniel from becoming me."

The sentence silenced her.

I looked at Emma.

"What does that mean?"

She didn't answer.

Arthur did.

"Ask her about the night she found out who Lily's real father was."

My blood ran cold.

I looked at Emma.

"Real father?"

Her face collapsed.

"Daniel..."

I couldn't move.

Because I knew.

There was another secret.

Another piece missing.

Arthur watched me.

Waiting.

Like he had been waiting years for this exact moment.

"Tell him."

Emma started crying.

"I didn't want you to know this way."

My voice was barely audible.

"Know what?"

She looked at Lily.

Then at me.

Then whispered:

"Lily isn't Victoria's daughter."

The world stopped.

I looked down at my baby.

My daughter.

The child I had loved.

The child I thought I understood.

Emma continued:

"Because Lily..."

She took a shaking breath.

"Was born from the same experiment that created you."

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

And then Arthur's phone suddenly rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed for the first time.

Fear.

Real fear.

He answered.

A voice came through.

A voice that made Arthur step backward.

Because it was the one person he never expected to hear again...

"Arthur."

May you like

A pause.

"You should have let me stay dead."
