Chapter 7 - The Mother Behind The Locked Door

Nobody moved.

Elena stared at the security monitor.

The woman standing outside the facility was impossible.

The same face.

The same eyes.

The same woman from the recording.

Her mother.

Isabella Voss.

Alive.

Marcus immediately reached for the security controls.

"Lock every entrance."

The guards moved.

Doors began sealing throughout the underground facility.

Adrian didn't move.

He just stared at the screen.

Like his entire world had stopped.

Claire looked at him.

"Adrian."

No response.

"Adrian."

He finally blinked.

"She can't be here."

Elena looked at him.

"Why?"

Adrian looked at the monitor.

"Because Isabella would never come back."

The words confused her.

"Why?"

A long silence.

Then Adrian answered.

"Because the last time I saw her, she was running from me."

Elena froze.

The room became silent.

"What?"

Adrian looked at her.

His expression carried something she had never seen before.

Regret.

"Your mother believed I was responsible for what happened to Thomas."

Elena stared.

"Was she wrong?"

Nobody spoke.

The question stayed between them.

Then the security monitor flickered.

The camera feed changed.

Isabella was no longer standing outside the door.

She was gone.

Marcus looked alarmed.

"Impossible."

"What?"

"The hallway camera."

He checked another screen.

"She disappeared."

Adrian stepped forward.

"Find her."

The guards searched through every camera.

Nothing.

No movement.

No sign.

Then Elena heard something.

A sound.

A quiet sound behind her.

A door unlocking.

Everyone turned.

At the end of the room was a hidden metal door.

Nobody had noticed it before.

Marcus looked confused.

"This room doesn't have another entrance."

Adrian stared.

But Elena wasn't looking at the door.

She was looking at the necklace around her neck.

The pendant was glowing.

A small light appeared from inside.

Adrian whispered:

"Thomas."

The door opened slowly.

Nobody breathed.

A woman stood behind it.

Older than the picture.

Tired.

But real.

Isabella Voss looked directly at Elena.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Elena."

The name broke something inside her.

Elena couldn't move.

She had imagined this moment thousands of times.

As a child.

As a teenager.

Every birthday.

Every night she wondered what her mother looked like.

What her voice sounded like.

Whether she remembered her.

But she never imagined this.

Not like this.

Not after discovering her entire life had been built on secrets.

"You're alive."

The words came out quietly.

Isabella nodded.

"I am."

Elena's eyes filled.

"Why?"

One word.

But it carried nineteen years of pain.

"Why did you leave me?"

Isabella looked devastated.

"I didn't."

Elena shook her head.

"You disappeared."

"I was forced to."

"Everyone says that."

Her voice became stronger.

"Everyone has a reason."

Isabella stepped forward.

"Elena..."

"No."

She wiped her tears.

"I spent my whole life thinking you chose not to come back."

Isabella looked at her.

"I came back every day."

The answer shocked her.

"What?"

"I watched you."

Elena froze.

"What do you mean?"

Isabella swallowed.

"Every year."

The room became quiet.

"I was there when you learned to ride a bike."

Elena stared.

"I was there when you graduated."

Her voice broke.

"I was there when you cried after your first heartbreak."

Elena felt overwhelmed.

"You watched me?"

"I protected you."

"From what?"

Isabella looked around the room.

At Adrian.

At Marcus.

At Claire.

Then back at Elena.

"From them."

The accusation was clear.

Elena looked at Adrian.

His face changed.

"Isabella."

She ignored him.

"You don't know what happened, Elena."

Adrian stepped forward.

"Don't do this."

Isabella looked at him.

The anger between them was immediate.

"You still protect her?"

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"I protected your daughter."

"No."

Isabella shook her head.

"You protected your family's secret."

Elena looked between them.

"Stop."

Both turned.

She looked exhausted.

"I need the truth."

Nobody answered.

"I need all of it."

Isabella looked at her.

Then slowly nodded.

"Okay."

She walked toward the table.

The same table where Thomas's recording had played.

She placed an old envelope down.

"I kept this for nineteen years."

Elena looked at it.

Her name was written on the front.

Her handwriting.

Or rather...

Someone else's handwriting.

Her father's.

"Why didn't you give it to me?"

"Because I wasn't sure who I could trust."

Her eyes moved toward Adrian.

Elena noticed.

"You still think he hurt my father."

Isabella didn't answer.

That was enough.

Adrian looked away.

Elena turned to him.

"Tell me."

He remained silent.

"Adrian."

Finally, he spoke.

"Thomas died because of my family."

The admission shocked everyone.

Marcus looked at him.

"Adrian."

"No."

Adrian continued.

"She deserves the truth."

He looked at Elena.

"My father built an empire by making enemies."

A pause.

"My brother continued it."

Elena remembered.

Daniel.

The missing brother.

"The night Thomas disappeared, he found proof that Daniel was planning to take control of everything."

Isabella whispered:

"He found proof that Daniel had ordered the attack."

Elena looked at her.

"On who?"

Isabella's eyes filled with pain.

"On Adrian."

Silence.

Adrian nodded.

"Thomas tried to warn me."

"But?"

"He was too late."

Elena looked confused.

"Then why did my mother blame you?"

Isabella looked at Adrian.

"Because Adrian disappeared after the explosion."

Adrian's face darkened.

"I was trying to survive."

"You were gone."

"I thought everyone was dead."

The room became silent.

Then Isabella looked at Elena.

"But there was one thing we didn't know."

"What?"

Isabella touched the envelope.

"Thomas had a backup plan."

Elena opened it.

Inside was a small piece of paper.

Only one sentence.

Her hands shook.

She read it.

"If Elena is reading this, then Adrian survived."

Everyone looked at Adrian.

Another line was written below.

"But if Adrian survived, then Daniel knows."

The room went silent.

Marcus looked toward the cameras.

"Daniel."

The name felt dangerous.

Isabella nodded.

"He never stopped searching."

Elena looked at her.

"Why?"

Isabella's expression changed.

"Because Daniel believes you have something he needs."

"What?"

Isabella looked at the necklace.

"The final piece of evidence."

Before Elena could ask, every light in the facility went out.

Darkness.

A second later, emergency lights turned on.

Red.

Flashing.

Marcus checked the system.

His face changed.

"No."

Adrian immediately knew.

"What happened?"

Marcus looked at the screen.

"The outer gate."

"Is it breached?"

Marcus swallowed.

"No."

"Then what?"

He turned the monitor toward them.

The security camera showed the entrance.

A man standing alone.

No guards.

No weapons.

No fear.

He was looking directly into the camera.

Elena stared.

Because she recognized him.

Not from memory.

Not from a photograph.

From the news.

From the name everyone whispered.

The man Adrian said was responsible for everything.

Daniel Voss.

The camera zoomed closer.

Daniel smiled.

Then he spoke through the security system.

"Hello, brother."

Adrian froze.

Daniel continued.

"I know you're in there."

A pause.

Then his eyes moved toward Elena through the camera.

"And I know you finally found my niece."

May you like

The door behind Elena suddenly unlocked.

Someone had opened it from the inside.
