Chapter 5 - The Door Hidden Inside The Necklace

The click came again.

Small.

Almost impossible to hear.

But Elena felt it.

The necklace in her hand was not just a necklace.

Something inside had moved.

Everyone stared at it.

Adrian stepped closer.

"Don't open it."

Elena looked at him.

"Why?"

His face was serious.

"Because once you know what's inside, there is no going back."

She almost laughed.

Almost.

"My whole life was a lie."

Her fingers tightened around the pendant.

"I think we're already past that."

The enemy soldiers watched silently.

The man who had shown them the necklace lowered his phone.

He was no longer smiling.

He looked nervous.

That made Elena notice something.

These men were not here to kill her.

They were waiting.

For her to discover something.

For her to open something.

"What is inside?" Elena asked.

Adrian didn't answer.

"Adrian."

He looked away.

That was enough.

"You know."

His silence confirmed it.

Elena stepped back.

"You knew there was something inside this necklace."

"I suspected."

"Suspected?"

Her voice rose.

"You saw a picture of me from nineteen years ago. You knew my father. You knew this necklace mattered. And you never told me?"

Adrian accepted her anger.

"I didn't know it belonged to you."

"But you knew Thomas Marlowe had a daughter."

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you find me?"

The question hit him harder than she expected.

Adrian looked down.

For the first time, the powerful man looked like someone carrying regret.

"Because I thought you were dead."

The answer silenced her.

Elena stared.

"What?"

Adrian took a slow breath.

"The night Thomas disappeared, someone came after everyone connected to him."

Marcus looked toward Adrian.

"You never told her this."

"I never had the chance."

Adrian looked at Elena.

"Thomas called me before he vanished."

The ocean waves crashed behind them.

"He told me he had hidden something."

"What?"

Adrian's eyes moved to her necklace.

"A truth that could destroy the people who controlled my family."

Elena touched the pendant.

"And my father gave it to me?"

"He gave it to someone."

A pause.

"Someone he trusted."

Elena frowned.

"My mother?"

Adrian nodded.

"Probably."

She looked confused.

"Probably?"

"I never met her."

"Then how do you know?"

Adrian looked at the photograph again.

"Because Thomas sent me that picture."

Elena froze.

"He sent you a picture of me?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Adrian's voice became quieter.

"He said if anything happened to him, I had to protect his daughter."

The words hurt.

Because Elena had spent nineteen years believing nobody had protected her.

Believing nobody had searched.

Believing nobody had cared.

And now a stranger was telling her someone had.

A man who was supposed to be dead.

The enemy leader suddenly spoke.

"How touching."

Everyone turned.

He smiled slightly.

"But you are missing the important part."

Adrian looked at him.

"What?"

The man pointed at Elena.

"She was never just Thomas Marlowe's daughter."

The air became colder.

Marcus stepped forward.

"Don't."

The man ignored him.

"Thomas didn't hide the key because he wanted to protect his daughter."

He looked at Elena.

"He hid it because she was the only person who could unlock what he left behind."

Elena felt confused.

"Unlock what?"

The man smiled.

"The truth about Adrian Voss."

Adrian's expression changed.

The enemy leader continued.

"Thomas knew what you were."

Adrian interrupted.

"Enough."

"No."

The man shook his head.

"You spent nineteen years hiding from the same secret."

He looked at Elena.

"Now she deserves to know."

Adrian moved forward.

But Marcus stopped him.

"Adrian."

The enemy leader continued.

"Your father discovered that Adrian's empire was built on a lie."

Elena looked at Adrian.

He didn't deny it.

That scared her.

"He discovered what Adrian's family had done."

Marcus's voice became angry.

"Stop talking."

But the man continued.

"And Thomas was going to expose them."

Elena looked at Adrian.

"Is this true?"

Adrian remained silent.

The silence hurt more than a lie.

"Adrian."

Finally, he spoke.

"Not everything he says is true."

"But some of it is."

Adrian looked at her.

"Yes."

The honesty shocked her.

"What did your family do?"

Before he could answer, gunfire exploded.

Everyone dropped.

The beach turned into chaos.

Marcus pushed Elena down behind the SUV.

The enemy men scattered.

Adrian grabbed a weapon from one of his guards.

Elena stared.

"You can barely stand."

"I can still protect you."

More shots.

The vehicles became shields.

Marcus shouted orders.

"Move!"

They rushed toward the SUVs.

Elena stayed close to Adrian.

Not because she trusted him completely.

Because somehow, despite everything...

She believed he was trying to keep her alive.

They escaped the beach moments later.

The enemy vehicles followed.

The chase continued along the coastal road.

Inside the SUV, nobody spoke.

Elena sat beside Adrian.

Blood from his injuries stained the bandage on his shoulder.

But he ignored it.

She looked at him.

"I want the truth."

Adrian looked out the window.

"I know."

"No more secrets."

A long pause.

Then he nodded.

"No more secrets."

The SUV entered a private underground facility hidden beneath an abandoned warehouse.

Elena stepped out.

She looked around.

"This is where you hide?"

Marcus answered.

"This is one of many places."

"How many people know about this?"

"Very few."

Adrian walked ahead.

"There is something Thomas left behind."

Elena followed.

"What?"

"A recording."

They entered a secure room.

Old technology filled the space.

Adrian opened a locked drawer.

Inside was a small device.

A memory drive.

Elena stared.

"That was hidden all this time?"

Adrian nodded.

"Thomas gave me the location."

"Why didn't you open it?"

Adrian looked at the drive.

"Because he told me not to."

Elena frowned.

"What?"

"He said only his daughter could open it."

Everyone looked at her.

Her heart started beating faster.

She stepped closer.

Adrian handed her the device.

Her fingers touched it.

A light appeared.

The system activated.

A screen turned on.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then a man's face appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

Elena stopped breathing.

Because she had seen him before.

In old photographs.

In dreams she barely remembered.

Her father.

Thomas Marlowe.

The recording began.

"Elena."

Her knees almost gave out.

The room became silent.

Everyone listened.

Thomas looked directly into the camera.

"If you are watching this, it means Adrian failed to keep you away from the truth."

Adrian's face changed.

Elena looked at him.

Thomas continued.

"But I also know Adrian would never betray me."

A pause.

Then Thomas leaned closer.

"There is something you need to understand."

The screen flickered.

The image distorted.

Thomas's expression became serious.

"You were never the target."

Elena felt confused.

"Someone else was."

The recording stopped.

Everyone froze.

Then the screen turned back on.

A second file appeared.

No name.

No label.

Just one word.

ELENA.

Adrian stared at it.

"No."

Marcus looked at him.

"What?"

Adrian stepped closer to the screen.

Because he recognized the file.

He knew exactly what it was.

"The second message."

Elena looked at him.

"What second message?"

Adrian whispered:

"The one Thomas said would only appear if..."

He stopped.

The file opened by itself.

A new image appeared.

A woman.

A woman Elena had never seen.

But Adrian recognized her immediately.

His face went pale.

Because the woman in the image was holding a newborn baby.

May you like

And beneath the picture were four words...

YOUR MOTHER IS ALIVE.
