Chapter 9 - Ethan’s Last Bargain

“My house is empty,” Eliza said.
Lucian was already dispatching security.
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
Everyone looked at him.
“My safe.”
“What?”
Ethan ran.
They followed him upstairs.
“The original Hartwell incorporation documents are at home.”
Eliza stared at him.
“You never told me we had a safe.”
“You never needed to know.”
He stopped.
Even now the sentence sounded terrible.
“I mean—”
“I know what you mean. Keep moving.”
They reached the house fifteen minutes later.
The intruder was gone.
The safe stood open.
Documents missing.
But nothing else touched.
Ethan sat on the floor.
“He has the original ownership agreement.”
Lucian understood first.
“With your signature.”
“And Eliza's.”
She frowned.
“My signature?”
“You signed the spousal incorporation consent eleven years ago.”
She remembered.
Barely.
A stack of paperwork Ethan had brought home.
“Can he transfer my shares?”
“Not legally.”
Lucian said, “Adrian stopped caring about legally decades ago.”
Eliza's phone rang.
Adrian.
This time she answered on speaker.
“You have something of mine.”
Adrian chuckled.
“Everything was Margaret's before it became yours.”
“What do you want?”
“Seventeen percent.”
“No.”
“Eliza—” Ethan began.
She silenced him with a look.
Adrian said, “Then Isabel dies.”
Lucian stepped closer.
“You want my shares instead?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because yours come with enemies. Hers come with legitimacy.”
Eliza understood.
Adrian did not simply want money.
He wanted the corporation back without appearing to steal it.
“Where?”
Adrian named a private marina.
Midnight.
Ethan spoke.
“I'll sign mine over.”
Adrian laughed.
“Your shares are worthless.”
“They won't be tomorrow.”
Silence.
Ethan continued.
“I'll publicly accept responsibility for the fraud. Every charge. Every transfer. Everything.”
Eliza stared at him.
“Ethan.”
He looked at her.
It wasn't heroism.
It was guilt.
Perhaps love too.
But mostly a man finally looking directly at what his choices had cost.
Adrian considered.
“Come alone.”
The call ended.
“No,” Eliza said immediately.
Ethan smiled sadly.
“You don't get to decide this one.”
“I absolutely do.”
“Not anymore.”
The words hurt differently this time.
He took off his wedding ring.
Placed it on the kitchen counter.
“I spent years telling myself loving you excused lying to you.”
Eliza said nothing.
“It doesn't.”
“No.”
“I made you invisible whenever your contribution threatened my ego. And tonight…”
His voice cracked.
“Tonight I made you sit outside because I wanted strangers to think I was more important than the woman who made half my success possible.”
Eliza's eyes burned.
“I can't fix that.”
“No.”
“But I can stop making you pay for my mistakes.”
He walked toward the door.
Lucian blocked him.
“You'll be followed.”
“Adrian said alone.”
“He'll believe you're alone.”
At 11:48, Ethan entered the marina warehouse.
Eliza and Lucian watched through a hidden camera.
Adrian stood beside Isabel.
Daniel Cross held a gun.
Preston Hale held the stolen documents.
Ethan placed a signed confession on the table.
“Release her.”
Adrian read it.
Then smiled.
“You finally learned sacrifice.”
Ethan's jaw tightened.
“From my wife.”
Adrian's smile vanished.
Isabel was pushed forward.
Lucian moved.
Eliza caught his arm.
“Wait.”
Something was wrong.
Preston kept looking toward Daniel.
Daniel kept looking toward Adrian.
Then Ethan's hidden microphone picked up a whisper.
Preston said, “Now.”
Daniel raised the gun.
But not toward Ethan.
Toward Adrian.
A shot exploded.
The camera fell sideways.
Eliza screamed.
Lucian's team stormed the warehouse.
By the time Eliza entered, one man was bleeding.
May you like
One had vanished.
And Ethan was lying motionless on the concrete.
